This Good Luck Baby Hat Pattern was designed as I went along. I wanted to make something special for a new baby cousin; something with meaning.

So I used the first successful skein of gradient yarn that I dyed and created this adorable, but easy baby girl hat. The 4-leaf clover was included so good luck would follow her her whole life through.

So without further ado, here is the pattern:

Size:
3 month –  1 year. The hat is relatively loosely knit and as it’s wool, is stretchy. So this will fit a 3-month old to 1 year, but can be adjusted by using different needle sizes if you wish to make it smaller or larger.

Finished Measurements:
8 inches wide at base, 7 inches in height

Materials:
Yarn: Sport Weight Wool, 50 g /130 yds( I used my own  hand-dyed yarn. Superwash is ideal for a new mother, but I used regular wool)

Needles: US 6, 32” circular (or longer) (if you use the Magic Loop method) or DPNs

Hook: Size G crochet hook (for the clover)

Abbreviations:
bo=bind off
co=cast on
dc=double crochet
k=knit
k1fb= k 1 front and back (knit into the next stitch as normal, but do not remove it from the left needle yet. Swing your right needle around to the back of your left needle, knit into the back of that same stitch and then slide the stitch off of the left needle. You’ve just created 2 stitches from 1)
sl st= slip stitch
sk=skip
st=stitch

Gauge: 18 st/4 in

Notes:
•Stockinette stitch, as we are working in the round, simply means to knit every stitch.
•I used the long-tail cast on method, but using any form of disappearing loop method works brilliantly as well.
•To bind off, I simply worked the basic bind off of knitting each stitch and passing it over the previously knit stitch. You can also use any form of stretchy bind off if you like, but it’s not essential.

Crown:

Rnd 1: Begin by casting on 8 stitches. Divide among your needles.

Rnd 2: K1FB in each st. 16 st.

Rnd 3: K

Rnd 4: (K1, K1FB) around. 24 st.

Rnd 5: K

Rnd 6: (K2, K1FB) around. 32 st.

Rnd 7: K

Rnd 8: (K3, K1FB) around. 40 st.

Rnd 9: K

Rnd 10: (K4, K1FB) around. 48 st.

Rnd 11: K

Rnd 12: (K5, K1FB) around. 56 st.

Hat Body:

Work stockinette stitch until you’ve added 3.5 inches to the hat. So the hat in total from CO to current should then be 5 inches.

Ruffle 1:

Rnd 1: (K6, K1FB) around. 64 st.

Rnd 2: (K7, K1FB) around. 72 st.

Rnd 3: K

Rnd 4: (K8, K1FB) around. 80 st.

Rnd 5: K

Rnd 6: (K9, K1FB) around. 88 st.

Rnd 7: K

Rnd 8: (K10, K1FB) around. 96 st.

Ruffle 2:

Pick up 56 st on the inside of the hat, at the base of Ruffle 1 (also where you stopped working Stockinette St for the body of the hat).  Both ruffles are starting at the same place, essentially.

Rnd 1: (K6, K1FB) around. 64 st.

Rnd 2: (K7, K1FB) around. 72 st.

Rnd 3: K

Rnd 4: (K8, K1FB) around. 80 st.

Rnd 5: K

Rnd 6: (K9, K1FB) around. 88 st.

Rnd 7: K

Rnd 8: (K10, K1FB) around. 96 st.

Rnd 9-13: K

4-Leaf Clover:

Rnd 1: Create a loose loop with your yarn and work 16 dc into the loop. Join with a sl st to the first dc and cinch up the loop to tighten the center hole.

Rnd 2: (Sk next dc, work 8 dc in next dc. Sk next dc, sl st in next dc.) Repeat around.

Finishing:

Fasten off, using the leftover tails to attach the clover to the hat and weave in all ends.

Block over a small ball or water balloon in a bowl and present to the lucky mother!
