Good job, Heather!
I wanted to be a nurse since I was 5. My mom got me a little nurse’s uniform at that time for Christmas. Years later, as my favorite Great-Aunt was dying from breast cancer, she made me promise I’d follow my dream and become a nurse. I eloped at 18 and didn’t get to nursing school until I was 30, but began my dream and kept my promise. Because of my love for nursing I continued my education in my 50s and got my graduate degree to move from bedside nursing on my cardiovascular unit to Nurse Manager of the same unit. Recently I retired after more than 32 years as a nurse on that unit. It was a thrill and privilege to serve my patients and staff!
Never give up your dream!

I am not a vet now, however, my love of animals continues and I own three horses that each year I take to various events (Children’s Hospitals, Agricultural days) where children may pet and interact with them. The look of wonder and amazement on the kid’s faces gives when they stroke the soft coat of the horse gives me great joy to see.

By the time I was twelve, I was determined to become a marine biologist. Nerdy with a propensity to read every single text book, national geographic, and even encylopedia I could get my hands on, Science seemed like the perfect ambition to fuel my need to understand how the world worked. That is until I got into high school and realized how closely entertained scientist.
So I kinda drifted through collegr, briefly toying with the idea of becoming a writer until I realized I wasn’t good enough or creative enough or original enough. Finally I settled on a history major, because it was the one subject in which my nerdy research and book loving self excelled.
However upon leaving college, my lack of confidence, leadership skills, and the need to actually you know be paid meant I never gained any practical experience.
Hence why I’m now over 30 years old and my greatest hope of finding a job, any job is to work alongside mindless teenagers while continuing cheerfully if you would like fries with that. Too bad my constant vertigo prevents that. The resulting need for a desk job that no one would hire me for means I’m semi-personally jobless with no hope of finding work.
The moral of the story: there is no place for dreams in the harsh reality of life.

What I wanted to be when I grew up, was very simple; I wanted to be like my dad. My dad is my hero and I looked up to him for everything. My dad is amazing and I was always asked this type of question when I was in school, and I can always remember putting things like, a vet, or a doctor, librarian, anything like that; because if I had of put my father as what I wanted to be when I grew up, no one would really get it. My dad is the reason I am the person I am today. He took me out to do everything, even though he worked nearly all the time. With what free time he did get from working graveyard shifts, he introduced me to the world of fantasy through games, books, myths and other such things. My dad has always encouraged me to do anything I put my mind to. He taught me a lot, even though if you ask him, he’ll tell you he was never there. From sports, right up to dance and music, My dad is the reason I know as many things as I do, and the reason I am who I am today. I have succeeded in being who I wanted to be when I grew up, because now everyone tells me I remind them so much of him when he was younger, and that makes me so proud to hear.

I don’t remember wanting to be anything when I was little but when I was a teenager I wanted to be a teacher, go in the Air Force, or be a flight attendant but was always told I wasn’t good enough or pretty enough. I worked many different types of jobs, retail, substitute teacher, secretary in a golf car company, purchasing agent for Navy Exchange and a merchandiser but best of all, a hands on mom.

I wanted to be a veterinarian!
When I was very young I wanted to be a Zoologist, Veterinarian, and nurse was in there as well. I loved and still love animals. I use to pretend I had a zoo and kept crickets and grasshoppers and other bugs, butterflies, etc. On the side of my childhood home there was a area that at one time was used for a coal shoot, that had been cemented in, all that remained was the cement and the door lid. So I kept my zoo of creatures there for a time until they started dying. I was so upset I had to let the ones that remained go. The funny thing is we lived 2 blocks from one of the biggest zoo’s in the US now and soon will be bigger than San Diego Zoo; The Henry Doorly Zoo, in Omaha NE. I did compromise on that though, life took over and I was not able to go to Veterinary school, but later in my life around age 39yrs I was able to go to school to be a Veterinary Technician, (Animal Nurse). I truly loved my job, but it would not stay that way, due to many physical problems I developed, it became impossible for me to continue. What an amazing give away Many Blessings to you.

Hi Chandi! Thanks for this opportunity.
When I was a kid, Evel Knievel was my hero! I even met him and got his autograph on my 13th birthday at the Fremont Dragstrip in Fremont, California. I rode motocross with the local to me Police Athletics League but in my heart of hearts, I wanted to be a daredevil stunt rider!
So, that was the mid 70’s and the closest I came to being a daredevil was having 4 kids! But oh what a wild ride that was and is. I would not change a thing.
I wanted to be an astronaut! I loved everything about space. Then, in my teenage years I wanted to be an interior designer (although I STINK at decorating LOL).

I wanted to be a lot of things: a waitress, a cafe owner (where my job would be to just check in on everyone…then my parents broke the news to me that business would be involved, haha), an ice skater (I’ve never ice skated), an interior designer, a florist, a fashion designer. It’s too bad, because now that I’m in the world looking for my first full-time job, I have no idea what I want to do (my major is very broad)! But, if money was not an object, I’d just create things. Paper, yarn, soap, essential oils. I just love the idea of being part of every step in a process, knowing how everything is made…that makes me sound a bit like a control freak, but I guess I am a little, haha! I just find projects with a handmade result so enjoyable, even with less traditional “crafty” things, like when I learned to solder during a girl scout project.
I wanted to be a ballerina.
Hi, Chandi! I always wanted to be a church organist (and I have been for 36 years!) as well as a bunch of other things; but churches generally don’t pay enough to cover the bills. When I was young I wanted to be an Astronomer. So I took German in HS. Because I was told that most of the science articles would be in German. Well, I found out I needed A LOT MORE MATH than German. It had to be math, the bane of my HS years not to mention my GPA. It was and is a language I still have difficulty understanding much less translating. So I did the next best thing and became an RN because after 5 years as a Nurses Aid in a nursing home I found I enjoyed taking care of other people and listening to their stories. That, and I enjoyed the science classes. So after graduating from college I worked 40 years in mental health. Retired now, and still taking care of people and listening to their stories, only this time its grandkids. Probably way too much information; and thats my story.

I ended up in the corporate world until I met a fish farmer and fell in love. We moved to the boonies for his company and had two kids.
