Hello, my beautiful one! This week, I want to share with you a stunning knitted shawl pattern called Shukrani. This gorgeous shawl was designed by Monica Wesley, and it was inspired by the Shukrani rose. Read on to learn more.

When asked about Shukrani, Monica said, “The colors of the Sunlit Rose Hues kit remind me of the many beautiful rose bushes that my mother used to grow when I was a child. In particular, the subtle pink, peach, and apricot hues of the CashSilk Sock kit evoke the colors of the Shukrani rose. Shukrani means thankfulness, appreciation, and gratitude in Swahili, and as the inspiration behind the Shukrani shawl, it’s a reminder to give thanks for the small moments of beauty that surround us every day.”

“The Shukrani shawl is knitted flat in one piece and begins with a delicate picot cast on and ends with a matching picot bind off. The shawl features an overall, lace design that recalls the soft curve of a rose petal, while the picots mimic the tips of leaves and the thorns of a rose.”

“The body of the shawl is constructed by repeating a 28-row sequence that is designed to be knitted with three complementary colors that will blend well with each other to create a gorgeous, symmetrical gradient from beginning to end.”

The updated version of Shukrani was made with our Limited Edition Affirmation Fingering yarn. This 100% wool blend includes a mix of various types of wool and features a more “rustic” feel, while still remaining scrumptiously soft. This 4-ply yarn is wonderful for shawls, scarves, cowls, sweaters, gloves and mittens, hats, and more. Let this yarn empower you and remind you of your inherent worth and limitless potential! (400 yds/365 m per 3.5 oz/100 g skein).

The updated sample was made in colors: C1) Filled with Focus, C2) Rise Above, and C3) Motivated Affirmation Fingering and used approximately 1066 yds/975 m total (C1: 344 yds/315 m, C2: 357 yds/326 m, and C3: 365 yds/334 m).

The original sample shown used our Sunlit Rose Hues Kit, and the colors in the photo below were worked from right to left as C1, C2, and C3. However, you can make this shawl with any three skeins of our CashSilk Sock yarn. This 75% Superwash Wool, 15% Cashmere, and 10% Silk yarn is soft, warm, cuddly, squishable, and strong and has the tiniest hint of glow.

The sample shawl used approximately 330 to 355 yards (302 to 325 m) of each color, and it used a total of 1,040 yds (951 meters). It has a finished, blocked size of  21” x 73” (53 cm x 185 cm). Additional repeats can be added, but it will require additional yarn.

We filmed a video tutorial for you showing you how to work the picot cast on and bind off, how to change colors, and how to knit the starting and finishing rows. Take a look!

This Intermediate level pattern contains instructions for the picot cast on and bind off, as well as both written and charted instructions. Skills/concepts include knitting a picot cast on and bind off, knitting and purling through the back loop, working with more than one yarn at a time, and slipping and passing stitches.
