Well, hello, gorgeous! Our pattern this week is a beautiful, floral shawl with some stunning columns of lace! Keep reading to learn more about this delightful design!

Baptisia was designed by Jane Vanselous. When asked about her pattern, Jane said, “The design of this shawl emphasizes long spikes of flowers that radiate from its center, surrounded by a garter stitch background. A simple, trellis-style lace pattern forms the outer border in a contrasting color.”

“Beginning with a knitted tab, similar to a garter tab, stitches are picked up along two of its edges, and the shawl is worked outward. The crescent shape is created by increasing stitches at several points along the right-side rows.”

“Both lace patterns are simple to work and would be suitable for an adventurous beginner. The size is easily customized, as the second color may be joined at almost any time.”

This Intermediate level pattern is for knitters who are ready to learn some new skills or stitch combinations. Stitches include knitting/purling multiple stitches together and an Estonian lace stitch. The updated version of Baptisia was knitted with our squishy Buttery Worsted yarn. Our scrumptious Buttery Worsted yarn is a dreamy soft, 2-ply worsted-weight yarn that’s boingy, bouncy, comfy, cozy, cushy, and cloud-like! It is unbelievably soft and perfect for snuggly blankets, cuddly accessories, sweaters, and other garments. Buttery Worsted is made from 100% Superwash Merino Wool and has 224 yds/205 m per skein.

We used one Blue Lace Agate Hues Buttery Worsted Kit for the updated sample, and it used approximately 912 yds/834 m total: Color A: 200 yds/183 m, Color B: 188 yds/172 m, Color C: 186 yds/170 m, Color D: 170 yds/155 m, and Color E: 168 yds/154 m. The colors were used from lightest to darkest.

The original version of Baptisia was made with our glowing Pearlescent Worsted yarn. Pearlescent Worsted is shimmering, heavenly, and wildly popular! It’s a delicious and glowing blend of 50% Superwash Merino Wool and 50% Mulberry Silk that’s luxurious, soft, and gleaming and has 220 yds/201 m per skein. When you combine these fibers into a single-ply yarn, you get subtle differences in tone, as the wool and silk take the dye differently. The colors truly appear to be iridescent!

We used colors July Larkspur Pearlescent Worsted (A) and Crystal Pearlescent Worsted (B) for the original sample. It used three skeins of Color A (550 yds total) and one skein of Color B (205 yds).

Have a watch! We filmed a video tutorial showing how to work a portion of this shawl.
