I was taught to crochet by an older lady in our church named Nancy who I called Grandma Nancy. The ladies in the church got together on Tuesdays to do crafts like crochet, knit, quilting, etc. and have lunch together. The items they made were donated to local charities and nursing homes. I was fascinated by crochet at the age of 4, and when all the other kids were outside the church playing while the ladies crafted I sat and watched Grandma Nancy crochet and begged her to teach me. She didn’t think I was serious but the next week she brought me some yarn and a hook and taught me single crochet. I was HOOKED! 🙂 I have crocheted since then. I think that little group is why I love to make so many hats and lapghans and donate them to charities now. Makes me feel real good.

YOU ANSWER ALL MY QUESTIONS AND MOTIVATE ME TO KEEP GOING. AFTER I SAW THE FIRST THING I KNIT I WAS READY TO GIVE UP.
Learned to knit at local yarn shop. Wish I had learned from my mom while she was still with us but like so many people we believe our parents are invincible and will be with us forever! I believe she is watching over me now as I am enjoying her favorite craft and smiling because she passed her love for knitting on to her daughter!
My Mother-in-law taught me how to knit. She was a wonderful women with many talents. However, she taught me English knitting and you, Chandi, taught me how to knit Continental for which I will always be grateful. Love your tutorials. Waiting for my first order to arrive this Friday, yah!
My mother tried to teach me but found it challenging to teach a leftie to crochet when she is a rightie. So she took a teach yourself crochet book and crossed out left and wrote right and crossed out right and wrote left. To this day my crochet pieces are reversed from the originals that I see in pictures but they stand the test of time.
My Mom and her mom (Grandma) taught me how to crochet. My mother-in-law taught me some more after my husband and I got married!
I learned to knit at the LYS and it was the best thing I ever did. Gorgeous stuff! I’d love to win!
My Aunt taught me to crochet when I was in my 20’s. Been doing it for the last few decades. Oh my…. that was weird to type that! LOL
When I was in 6th grade or so, I saw an article on gurl.Com about how to knit. I was really excited to try it so I grabbed a pair of chopsticks and some yarn and taught myself to knit that night. Then in 7th grade my best friend taught me how to crochet.
I would love to win this neat package of assorted yarns, tools and something to carry then in. Can’t beat that . Thanks!
Most of what I learned I self taught from the internet, youtube, and books with help at my LYS when i was confused.
Taught by my Mother when pregnant with first son. Way back! Took it up again 5 years ago and will never stop!
I was always in awe when my mom used to crochet, watching her hands create. I finally bought me a book and taught myself how to crochet!
My mom and my Nana taught me at about 5-6 years old. But it wasn’t until I was almost 40, lol, where my knitting looked like knitting. I played with it over the years til that point, but I was more of a crocheter than knitter til that point.
Now, anything goes!
I LOVE your yarn, especially the yak silk!
My mom taught me how to crochet when I was 7. Been crocheting for the last 30 years 🙂 Recently I decided that I needed to know how to knit too, so I taught myself 2 years ago by using friends and youtube to learn how to do it. During all the fun, I taught my 12 year old daughter to knit too. She, of course, already knew how to crochet 🙂
My grandmother taught me to knit at age 5. I found out much later that it was my own Mom (as a teenager) taught her (her mother) to knit. Mom learned at YMCA camp during WW II (while my Gramma worked in a camera factory converted to a gun-sight factory during ‘The War’).
I was taught by my mother to crochet when I was 12 years old. I used to take a doily she had crocheted and count and copy her stitches. It was many years later that I learned to read a pattern and know what each of the stitches were called.
I learned to knit from an English woman when I was stuck home with the mumps.
She knit SO fast and I was so impressed with her speed. Needless to say, I am still trying today to knit as fast and accurate as she did back then. 🙂

I actually taught myself to crochet. My first project was a blanket for the bf…yeah, it was a triangular blanket. Took me a while to grasp the tension aspect of crocheting. I thought the tighter the better, nope 🙂

My Grannie-in-law helped meto refresh those skills.
My grandma taught me the chain stitch when I was young, but I didn’t really learn to crochet until my friend taught me when I was 33.

I learned by watching videos on knittinghelp.com and youtube.
My Welsh grandma (‘nain’ pronounced ‘nine’).
My grandmother taught me to crochet and knit. My mom swears I knit like a left-handed person taught me. After she had a stroke that have her double vision, she continued to knit dish cloths by feel. She never taught anyone to tat, but I’m trying to teach myself via YouTube to preserve her legacy.
I learn to crochet by sitting in front of a co-worker. Since I am left-handed this worked very well. The majority I learned from books. I used a mirror to see the pattern from the left hand point of view. I also reverse the instructions for apparel in order to get the front pieces on the correct side.
YOU, my dear Chandi, taught me to knit AND crochet! Via YouTube, of course, and what an eye-opening experience it has been! There is a whole other world out there, FULL of crocheters, knitters, spinners, dye-ers, you NAME it, that I never knew of in my previous 47 years of my life! LOL, and what a beautiful thing! I have so much catching up to do! So much to learn! So much yarn to try, unsuccessfully, NOT TO BUY!!!! It is all so beautiful, little nuggets of luscious gorgeousness waiting to be reincarnated into something spectacular for the rest of their lives!!! And I get to, we all get to, be the ones to make that happen! How cool is THAT?!
I technically learned to knit in about 4th grade in Girl Scouts! I really learned to knit in college. A sweet older lady who owns Rose Tree Fiber Shop taught me! I learned to crochet from my great-aunt!
We had to learn how to knit in home ec in elementary school. Tried to make this neon green sweater thing – hated it. Taught myself again years later after watching other students (not just girls but also boys) knit during long lectures – loved it 🙂 Thanks for doing another giveaway!
My grandmother taught me the basics of crochet, and made me 2 full sized sleeping bags all crocheted! A couple of years ago she stopped crocheting, and gave me her hooks, needles, yarn and pattern books. My Mom taught me how to knit 40 years ago. She was knitting a sweater for herself and I asked her to knit me one. She said that I should learn to knit and do it myself, but that she would be there to help me when I needed it. So that’s what we did.

My aunt started me out by teaching me to chain and do single crochet. I then started watching youtube videos to learn from there!
My mom taught me to knit over 55 years ago. The lessons involved many tantrums on my part. She is right handed and I am left handed. She, being a recent immigrant to Canada from Czechoslovakia (escaping Hitler) knit the ‘European’ method but for whatever reason, taught me the ‘North American’ method. Now, I knit as though I am right handed and WISH I could knit the way she does. Now that she’s 93 years old, I bring wool to her Seniors residence whenever I can. I’m so thankful for her gift to me.
My cousin taught me when she would babysit me and my brother.
My mom taught me to crochet was I was quite young. I’m fairly certain she did so to keep me out of her hair – while *she* was crocheting and any time she was trying to relax. It’s not easy raising two girls as a single mom. So, I know any downtime she had was precious, precious, precious. <3
I taught myself to knit last year (2013). I was always fascinated by the variety of things that could be done with various combinations of knitting and purling. I'm not sure why my mom never taught me to knit. I know she knows how! <3

I had a domestic goat horn go through my right hand when I was 30. My mother came to visit to help out and since I couldn’t enjoy my usual past times with my goats, horses, etc., she taught me to knit and crochet. Physio was easy after that and my Mom laughed and laughed about having to wait until I was that age to be taught to knit/crochet since she couldn’t keep me out of tree-houses when I was a kid. Knitting and crocheting are now a passion – and I know she is looking down and still laughing.

My Baba taught me when I was little. However, more recently, as her health REALLY began to fail, she was left very bored and very sad because she was physically able to do very little. She asked me if I could teach HER how to knit socks. Being a granddaughter who loves her grandmother more than anything else; and able to do so little for her from living a long distance, I watched a bunch of YouTube videos and learned how to knit socks. Poor Baba! She has been working on the same pattern for over a year. She is incredible when she sets her mind to something! Even if her mind is more than half the trouble. She won’t ever give up but ooooh, my poor sweet baba.

My grandmother taught me to embroider and knit when I was 4 years old. I will be 80 in August and still enjoy my craft. Over the years I have taught my children and grandchildren the joy of craft along with many other friends and friends of friends. Your color ways are so fun to look at, especially when you show your inspiration photo alongside your yarn! Thanks for the color lifts!!
I first learned to knit when I was in 4-H at around 10 years old. My first teacher’s name was Mrs. Edmondson. I think her first name was Mamie – and I think she was probably some kin-folk somewhere down the line! My first knitted item was a green and white striped scarf (the 4-H colors). I loved knitting, but didn’t knit a whole lot after that until I was married with children. At that time, my mother-in-law, Grace, re-ignited my love for knitting. We enjoyed many years of knitting for each other and for my children (her grandchildren). She passed away 6 1/2 years ago. Mama Grace and I shared many loves – and next to our love for God, was our love for knitting.

I had always wanted to knit, but I didn’t know anyone who did and couldn’t seem to teach myself, a few years ago I found a local yarn shop where they taught an have never looked back!
My gramma tried! But she had me facing her. I did what I saw no what she intended so she gave up. When I was 30+, my daughter asked me for a hand kit sweater. I found “I taught myself to knit!” and the rest is history
My aunt and a coworker taught me when I was younger. I have learned most of my crocheting on my own and am trying to teach myself to knit.
My grandmother taught me to knit before I went to school. Learned to crochet a little while later. That was over 60 years ago, we won’t say exactly how many over!
A friend’s mom taught me how to knit when I was 14, and I learned more from an English lady I rented from when I left home. I grew up watching my grandmother and great-grandmother crochet, and learned from this

My friends at work.
A co-worker taught me to crochet almost 20 years ago. I love it!

I taught myself.
My mother taught me and my sister the basics when I was 4 and my sister was 7. Our Siamese cat was going to have kittens and we wanted to make each of them a baby blanket. Lol.
Many many years later I taught knitting for a local school district, as an after-school enrichment program for juniors and seniors in their early-college program. I had 30 students in each 4-week class.
Mom taught me to knit. Crochet I learned from an eighth grade (1968) classmate who made me a rainbow winter scarf that I still have hanging over my closet door where I see it every day. Sandi Shotwell inspired me to begin to Hook and I am still doing it all these years later…
My mother taught me to knit and crochet both when I was about 10 yrs. old. My mom, my aunt, and my grandma were all excellent knitters and crocheters. And so it goes!!

Hi. When I was about 9 years old I wanted to learn to knit. The women of our family were not knitters nor chrocheters. I went to the local 5 & 10 store and bought a book on “How to Knit & Crochet”. I followed the instuctions and learned both needle arts. I still have that book and have taught others from it.

My great Auntie Mary taught me to knit and crochet as soon as I could hold the hook and the needles….been doing both ever since! I, in turn have taught so many to do the same….many of them complete strangers who just showed a bit of interest in the Dr.s office or the dentist, a train or a plane! I always carry extra hooks and needles for just that purpose. Auntie Mary taught me to share the love!
I was taught to crochet by my Auntie V because I was too clumsy to work two knitting needles (Auntie V was a FABULOUS knitter, making gorgeous suits for herself in the early 60’s). I still don’t knit, but I have Auntie’s books for backup instruction.
My Mom taught me the basics and I got obsessed!

Hello Chandi
My mother taught me how to knit when I was 5, so I have been knitting 45 years, wow. That is a very long time and I am still loving every minute of it. I find that knitting relaxes me, and I learn something new everyday.
Thanks for the opportunity
TerryLee

Hello! I don’t know how to knot or crochet. It’s my sister that knows how to do both. My grandmother taught her. If I won this contest, she’d be thrilled to get some of your beautiful yarn!! Thank-you
My mother taught me to knit and crochet many years ago. I crocheted for many years and then took a break from all. 18 months ago I started knitting again and now can’t stop adding to my yarn stash (especially your beautiful yarns).
My mom taught me years ago and then when I started back up I used good old youtube to refresh my memory.

Now I knit. After some down time at work, I figured I needed to learn a craft. I bought a teach yourself to knit kit and went to town.
Mostly, I’m teaching myself to crochet and knit. My snl gave me some good tips to help improve my knitting. I neeD to win your fabulous yarn!
I taught myself with self help books to both crochet and knit. My left handed aunt tried to teach me to crochet, my being right handed and only 10 yrs old at the time, she gave up, purchased me the self help book, and said she was sorry but that was the best she could do. by the end of 2 wks I had taught myself to crochet. many years later, at the age of 26, I taught myself to knit the same way.
I taught myself to knit and crochet from a book. Wish I’d had YouTube way back then. If I don’t understand things now I check YouTube or Google.

I learned the basics from watching my mom crochet afghans, but me and the internet did the rest!
My Grandma taught me to knit when I was 4 years old. Sadly she passed away when I was 10 but I will always have the memory of her teaching me to knit.
My Mom taught me to crochet 1st; back in the 70’s (high school years)…Then I switched to macrame crafting; then full time work and 2 kids took over and I lost my “free craft time”…THEN, in 2012 I re-taught myself to crochet, with help from You Tube, and new crochet friends via facebook. (My 4 grandsons needed winter hats 🙂 ) I am still learning, but getting better at learning new stitches, and appreciate the many types of yarns available today!!
My mother taught me how to knit. I still remember the first yarn she gave me to work with……peach wool. I also remember the first time she took me to a yarn shop to buy yarn and a pattern for the first sweater I ever knit. When I finished the sweater, it looked so bad I just cried. She told me to dry my tears. If this was the worst thing that ever happened to me in life, I would be a very lucky girl. She then unseamed the sweater, ripped it out and reknit the whole thing. I never gave up trying to knit and have always held that little piece of advice close to my heart.
Read knitting for dummies chapter by chapter and my BFF who is a knitting guru
Love the yarn absolutely stunning colors and textures and so dreamy to knit with

My two grandmothers taught me to knit along with my mother. I didn’t make it a daily affair until the birth of my second child. My daughters are learning now!
My grandmother taught me to knit when I was five years old – and then I didn’t pick it up again until college (again, with her). She was an amazing knitter and seamstress and passed along a serious passion for fiber arts. I miss her dearly but she lives on with my knitting!
My mother taught me how to crochet when I was 12 and we were on a family vacation (she always had us choose a craft to take along in case we were “bored”). Now she only knits and swears she does not remember how to crochet!

I love your yarn and have been beyond pleased with everything I have ordered!
I was taught to crochet by my Aunt and my Grandma. I am so grateful to them for giving me this creative outlet.
My great-grandmother taught me to knit when I was eight. Thank heavens. My parents wouldn’t leave me home with a babysitter (only child) so I was dragged along when they went to visit their adult friends for the evening. This was before much tv and a lot of their friends didn’t have young kids, so knitting was the only way to keep boredom away.
I’m self taught for both knit an crochet. I used Klutz books and free online videos to learn.
I “partially” learned cast on knitting & knitting just rows when I was around 10 years old. My Nonnie (grandma) taught me. My stitches were tight & I lost interest. Now, 40 years later, a friend coaxed me into a local yarn store. After a brief review of cast on, & “stitch & bitch” book, also “knitting for dummies”, I have fallen IN LOVE with knitting. When I find a pattern, I look over the stitches, look them up in one of my reference books, practice if needed….I’ve made socks, hats, felted items. I absolutely LOVE yarn & fibers. I’m going to purchase a spinning wheel in the near future. Lov your website…the concept of color.
My girl scout leader did years ago but my elderly neighbor who I adored taught me the basics. YouTube helped me the rest of the way.
A lady at an antique market taught me to crochet. It was such fun, and I crocheted everything from rugs to the beads that were in Woman’s Day WAY back in 1968-9, 1971-2(?). Anyway, I still crochet, especially for lacy items as it appears much easier.
Now, as for knitting… I went to a department store on my lunch hour in downtown Dallas, TX, where a young lady taught me to knit a vest with mohair…. which had a pattern similar to argyle on the edges. Very pretty. WAY too little so gave it away…. sorry I did!
Aren’t you sorry you asked? LOL

After I had been knitting a few months, I picked up a book on crocheting at Woolworth’s and taught myself how to crochet. This was back in the days BEFORE orlon & acrylic yarns. Red Heart Knitting Worsted was just that – worsted weight WOOL. But it was also before wool yarns became so soft and pliable and a joy to knit & crochet with.

Not long ago, I bought some yarn, a granny square kit and my daughter and I clumsily put together the squares for an afghan for her bed. I learned to knit and crochet with help from my grandmother.
Amazing yarn! Congrats! 😀
I taught myself most of what I know…I had an Aunt who could look at a sweater in a shop window and go home and make it!! I have always envied her but she helped me when she could. I love to knit. I love scouring the internet for new things and new ways to do them,
My father was in the military and one of his co-workers was also left handed and he had her teach me to crochet. I am learning to knit through a local class.
My incredibly talented mother taught me how to crochet. After that, books, video tutorials, and trial and error helped me out!
My grandma and my mother taught me how to knit..when I was a little girl , and then I bought a book about knitting , bacause I love that!
My granny tried to teach me how to crochet when I was about seven but all I could do was make an enormously long chain. It wasn’t until I was 26 and pregnant with our first child that I really took to crochet. I went to my granny pleading with her to teach me because my nesting instinct was so strong that I had run out of things to do at home. And I have never been one to sit around and do nothing. So she taught me even though she was doubtful that anything would come of it. Now six years later, I have my own crochet business and share a passion with my granny that has blessed us both in so many ways. Love you Granny!!
Love, Love LOVE your yarn! Not on facebook, so don’t get to enter so many contests 🙁
My mom taught me how to crochet. I love to crochet, and we love to sit at the kitchen table and chat and crochet!!! I love sharing that with her! I am now teaching myself to knit, and hoping to get good enough to make mom some awesome socks and slippers!!
An elderly neighbor taught me to knit one summer when I was 7 or 8. This annoyed my mom who said, “I could have taught you!” But, I’m sure it gave the lady pleasure to spend the time as we sat on the porch and I struggled with an ugly pink slipper.
My grandmother taught me how to crochet when I was 10 (35 years ago now! Holy Crap I’m OLD!). I’ve taught myself how to knit over the past few years and now I jump back and forth between them.
I taught myself to crochet. I’ve been crocheting for about 18 years now. It’s a good way to just relax.
My Mum and my Nan both taught me how to knit (along with drawing, cooking and all kinds of other lovelies) when I was very young, and it stayed with me. That’s not to say I’m great at it, but I am learning all the time and loving your yarns!
My grandma on my dad’s side of the family taught me to crochet when I was 10 years old. She was left-handed, and I’m right-handed, so we sat across from each other, and I learned mirror-image from her. After finishing a very lopsided Barbie blanket, I didn’t use it again for about 15 years.
I learned to knit when I was 20, using a learn-to-knit booklet, with a little help from a neighbor lady when I got stuck. I was amazed that the tension I had learned with my left hand for crocheting somehow transferred over to my right hand to help me as I learned to knit. In that way, my grandma helped me learn to knit as well!
My Mom taught me how to knit when I was in school. I loved to knit but as time went on I really liked things that I saw that were crochet so I taught myself how to crochet and have been hooked ever since. haha
My grandmother taught me to knit and my mother taught me to crochet. It took a lot longer to learn to crochet.
My mother taught me to knit and crochet when I was eight years old. I later took knitting lessons from a wonderful German lady named Gertrude (whose shop always smelled of wonderful food, as her home was in the back of the shop), through my 4-H group. I now teach others to knit every chance I get!
My mom taught me to knit as a kid, but I had forgotten how. Then my mother in law taught me how to both knit and crochet.
I love this yarn and can always use more. PLEASE☆☆☆☆☆
Actually, my step daughter taught me how to knit while she was home for Christmas break. I was hooked and have not stopped since. It is a nice bond with her =)
My Grandmother taught her daughters to knit & crochet, but my mother did not feel very confident at crafts, because Grandmother was quite accomplished. So instead of teaching me herself, my mother paid for me to take the same 10 week class at Sears Roebuck (now THAT is an old name) that she had just enjoyed taking to bring her skills up to a level she was proud of, going on to knit up many a sweater that we wore with pride!
Love! So pretty!
My maternal grandmother knit doll clothes, I was inspired by her, but taught myself when I was 15. Love to knit sox….
My grandmother taught me how to crochet when I was very young. She gave me her hook doubles, and along with a blanket she crocheted for me, the hooks are all I have left of her.
My mom taught me the basics and away I went! Love your yarns!!
My aunt taught me to crochet but I taught myself to knit!
I have crocheted since learning in the girl scouts at an early age. A co worker taught several of us to knit 3 years ago and we still gather 1 night a week for a coffee house knitting group. It is the most relaxing therapy.
My Girl Scout troop leader, when I was 17, and then a couple years ago when I was 25 my husband’s Nana helped me brush up on basics.
My grandmother started teaching me when I was little, but it wasn’t until I was pregnant with my daughter at 28 that I sat and finally relearned what she had been trying to teach me 🙂
My Grandma taught me to crochet at age 7 and knit at age 8. I’ve loved it and shared it with family and friends ever since, through gifts made stitched shared (with those who also love to knit and crochet as I do) or just letting them see what joy it brings me!
My Grandma taught me to crochet as a little girl and I tried to learn by myself to knit, but was unsuccessful. The lovely owners of All About Yarn, Karen and Cindy taught me to knit together. They spent hours teaching me lace patterns for free and them putting me in a beginning sock class. I have never looked back. I’ve been knitting for hours every day since!
I learned to crochet when I was in 4-H as a little girl. I re-taught myself as an adult after years of not picking up a hook. I love crochet, and I would love to win some of your beautiful yarn!!
I took a 30 minute knitting lesson at my LYS in January of 2010 for the basics. Everything else has been self-taught by watching videos online. I’m still loving it!
My grandmother taught me both
I was taught by my mom and YouTube videos.
My mother-in-law showed me how to knit, after watching her knitting things on the cold winter evenings. Then a light went off and I thought I should learn how to do this amazing task myself. That was 40 years ago, and I haven’t slowed down yet! Thank you Mom!
I learned how to crochet from you tube and books, all I wanted to learn was how to make a flower for my daughters scrapbooks, not knowing that it was going to lead me to exiting new things now I’ve put scrap booking on hold and I can’t stop on crocheting ….. I just love it!!!!
I’m a self taught crocheter!! 🙂

I honestly don’t remember who taught me when I was about 7 and I never did anything with it until about 8 years ago when I was at a health resort and they had a knitting class as a similar form of meditation to yoga……I went and picked up the needles and yarn and it ALL came back to me from MANY MANY years back and I haven’t stopped since!
My aunt taught me to knit left handed as a kid. When I became an adult no one could help me with a project so I wen to Foothills Adult School and took a class from Charlie Hada in El Cajon, CA. She taught me to knit right handed and crochet too.

I learned “late” in life, in my forties. A couple of the most patient ladies on earth taught me how to do both! It has become my obsession ever since then! So thanks to Anne and Sharon.
My grandmother first taught me to knit, but then I never did it again. Last year I decided to pick up some needles because I was getting bored with my hooks. I needed a more exciting pattern selection than what I was seeing, and I wanted to re-learn the skill. So I went to a little shop on a Saturday morning at O-Dark-thirty at Knit Schtick in Newport Beach, CA. The rest is history – I’m “hooked!”
I watched my grandma crochet as a little one but didn’t learn. I taught myself how to knit when I was mid 66 thereabout and learned so much from you tube, books ect. Finally took a class at Joannes and later, finally found a couple of knit groups and they were a big help.

Thank you for the amazing giveaways!
I taught myself how to both knit and crochet! I read books and watched YouTube videos. It’s been 5 years and I feel like I’ve learned so much and I continue to learn more each day!
My late mother-in-law taught me to crochet and then I took off from there learning to knit. I miss her so much, especially when I start a new project or run into problems – we used to chat over the phone to figure out what we’d done wrong or if we didn’t understand a pattern.
New knitter here! With this past winter being a long one took a two hour class. The women was not very nice at all, so came home & found you on YouTube. Chandi, you were the only one that made it fun out of all the video’s that I had found that day. THANK YOU! So in theory YOU taught me to knit. I learn to crochet when I was around 10 years old. I forgot to say that I learned to knit from my mother. I remember sitting and watching her needles fly! I learned to crochet from my best friend, Cyria, and I swear she never even looks at the stitches. I then taught her to knit and she is way faster than I am.
I learned to Crochet by watching my mother and purchasing some books on it. Knitting was something I experimented with and watch videos and books. I still have a lot to learn as I’m just getting back to both after a hiatus of about 40 years. I have forgotten so much!! I’m still working on my yarn stash and love the more exotic ones like Alpaca and Yak.. My biggest problem is finding the time to do this and then keeping my Arthritic thumbs from hurting.
My grandmother taught me how to crochet when I was younger. My mom’s best friend taught me the basic stitch of knitting on one of her visits. I have not done either in years. My little girl wants to learn and I found your video on YouTube and picked both up again. Thanks!
my mom loves it. 🙂
thanks for chance!

My mom and grandma tried to teach me to knit when I was six. Apparently, I picked it up well, but I mirrored what each was doing, so when my right-handed grandmother showed me, I would knot left-handed; when my left-handed mother tried, I reversed. Eventually they both gave up and taught myself (and countless others) to crochet at 25. 🙂
A neighbor of mine taught me to crochet in second grade, and my mom taught me some knitting basics when I graduated high school 🙂
My best friend’s mother taught me how to crochet. Loved her so much she was so patient and helpful. My Grandmother also crocheted all the time and made beautiful afghans. My other friend’s mother taught me how to knit years later and I love to knit more than crochet. Love to make things for my two grandchildren. Love you yarn. It’s always soo beautiful and works up so nicely.
I learned to crochet at an Adult-Ed course, taught by a wonderful, patient, fantastic teacher, Linda.

I recently taught myself how to knit six months ago using old yarn and color pencils haha. Had to start some where I guess. I am waiting on my first set of crochet hooks from amazon but I will be learning soon how to crochet. YouTube has been a huge help with me learning and some of your videos are super helpful. Two things I wish for is money so I can expand my knowledge and a wheel so I can spin my own yarn but I can wait.
I re-taught myself to crochet after a long hiatus and taught myself to knit too. Though I picked up tricks and tips from other instructors and yarn shop owners

I’m actually just learning to crochet from my wife. Her mother has been rocking the fiber arts scene for thousands of years, that’s eons to you and me, Russ.
I taught myself to crochet with the help of a group of friends. When I was young, married, living across the USA in Virginia ( I grew up in Washington State), poor, pregnant and very homesick, I needed something to do to keep myself busy. My husband was in the Navy stationed at Quantico and there were lots of young women in my same situation. We formed a club to teach each other how to sew, knit and crochet for our babies. We made complete layouts, including diapers. This was 1960 – no paper diapers then. We shared fabric and yarns so we all had beautiful items for our babies. I still sew and crochet. Knitting just never stuck. I find it difficult and frustrating but sewing and crocheting always brings back wonderful memories. Fifty-four years later I still am an avid sewer and crocheter. Thank you for the chance to win beautiful yarn and a carrier.
I am totally self taught!
Everything in this giveaway is perfect. Love your yarns!
I learned to crochet from one grandmother when I was ten and to knit from the other when I was 12 or so.
Love your store!
I would LOVE to win this! I knit and crochet. I thought myself most of what I know now. I’m always teaching myself new stitches and techniques. A pattern with something new to conquer is the best kind! I love the stimulation. I find knitting is more conducive to this.

My grandma taught me to knit when I was about 9 or 10. She was an inspiration in all things crafty as she could embroider, sew, knit, and impress with all her ideas! When we were young, she sewed clothes for her grandkids (as toddlers, not teens) using cloth from rice sacks!
My friend had a beanie that he had gotten in Paris. It was old, faded and coming apart. So, I signed up for a series of classes at a LYS so I could learn to knit and make him a new one. After I started the classes, I took the hat and found out it was crocheted, so I signed up for a series of classes to learn to crochet…
I taught myself to knit at around age 8 or 9. My mom and my grandma taught me how to knit. Both grandmas were prodigious knitters.
I learned while my husband was on deployment. I was missing him and really needed a new hobby. I went to a local craft store to pick up some beads and they also sold yarn, patterns and basically everything you would ever need for anything crochet, knit, yarn related. I found the most beautiful blanket and knew I had to make it! I knew I’d never be able to teach myself and the owner of the store offered to teach me. She was the kindest person and so patient with me! I’ll be forever grateful to her for teaching me this amazing craft!

My grandmother taught me the basics of knitting and crocheting. I expanded my knowledge with books and YouTube videos. Still learning new things, but I love it!
I learned to knit on YouTube! Yes, my grandmother was a knitter, but she felt she “did it wrong” so she would never teach me. Which is so sad. I think she felt Continental was the “right” way. I try to learn as many styles as I can so I don’t get Carpal Tunnel and hand strain. I would have been knitting for years longer if she hadn’t been so embarrassed. I wonder who made her so self conscious about her knitting. 🙁
actually, a teacher taught me how to knit. It was a ‘gifted’ class anyway, and schools don’t know how to keep gifted people busy, so it was a win-win. My grandmother taught me to crochet.
My grandmother taught me to crochet, but I could never understand knitting. Finally, as an adult, I took a class at a LYS that went beautifully and have been doing both ever since. 🙂

A coworker showed me how to do a basic knit stitch many years ago. I never got beyond the few rows I did that day. Years later, in grad school, I needed something to do on the 5 or 10 minute breaks we got during 4-hour classes. My classmates headed outside to smoke or to get junk food from the vending machines, but neither option appealed to me. I made some sort of cast on and somehow remembered the knit stitch. I splurged on really nice yarn ($34 for one skein was a blow to my grad student budget) and the most incredible feeling wood needles…and I have been a self-proclaimed yarn snob ever since.
I’m self taught, I had seen a pattern for a pair of converse style baby booties I wanted to make for when my nephew arrived – never did manage to make them in time as it was a little ambitious a project at the time, but absolutely hooked since! 🙂 He gets toys made for him now instead!

I taught myself to crochet from a book!
I know I’ve said time and again that I don’t know how to crochet. And I DON”T, really! {I just bought Crocheting for Dummies}. However, my Grandmother taught me when I was about 6 and I made just one thing, a small triangle out of red yarn that my Mother, to this day, put up on the Christmas tree every year! I know now that at the beginning of the row, I wasn’t adding another single crochet, and that’s why I made the triangle. At the time, I was exasperated and didn’t continue.

My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was four. I remember making granny squares with her and she showed me how to put them together to make an afghan. I miss her.
I was taught to crochet by my mother-in-law. I had been dating her some for a few months and one day she was crocheting and I asked her how she did it. She showed me all the stitches and how the change colors without having to tie knots in the middle of my project. I started my first afghan (a birthday gift for my mom) and my mother-in-law encouraged me through ‘those’ moments (realizing I made a mistake 8 rows back!) She passed away soon after an never saw my finished afghan but I will always enjoy crocheting and think of her. Hi Chandi,
My mother taught me knitting when I was 8 yr. old, I didn’t really like it that much, but struggled on because she took the time to guide me. Fast forward several years to the time a co-worker taught me to crochet….haha, what a wonky scarf! – filet crochet. I was 20 yrs old at that time, so I turned the tables and taught my mother how to crochet! We had a lot of fun learning together. Later on I took spinning and weaving, and learning about the Fibre Arts. You’re never too old to learn, so maybe I’ll pick up those needles again….who knows, I may just learn to Purl afterall!
My mom taught my daughter (age 9) how to knit last summer, so I told her I needed to learn, too! I began knitting just this past Thanksgiving!

I knitted a red scarf shaped small item. It started out at about 3 inches wide and ended at about ended up around 5.5-6 inches wide, but I made it and I was thrilled!
My mother taught me to crochet when I was 12. I didn’t do it long made one blanket and got into sports. I told him I knew how to crochet and he ordered some things online and had them delivered to me at home. This was 7 years ago that I started to crochet again and have been doing it ever since. I love learning new things and seeing what else I can do/make.

My mother taught me to crochet when I was 6. I was always at her side and she wanted to keep me busy and quiet when she went to meetings and took her little tag along. It was something I really took pride in as a 6 yr old because none of my school mates knew how to do it! With a knit shop and books, I learned to knit in my 20’s. In my 50’s I learned to weave with a teacher from the local quilt. Yarn ALWAYS has a home with me because of the variety of ways I use it.

As a kid I took road trips with my Grandparents. To keep me entertained my Grandma sat with me in back and taught me to crochet. I’m left handed so she sat facing me so I could mirror her (I’ve used this technique to teach a few right handers myself). This started when I was five and by age nine I had picked up knitting also. It’s been a passionate affair ever since.
I am a self taught knitter, wanna be crocheter, spinner and weaver. I also dabble in sewing.
I finally got online to teach myself to knit about 5.5 years ago. When I was little I was supposed to spend the summer after 4th grade with my granny. She was going to teach me how to sew, crochet and knit. I was so excited. However, she passed away quickly after a recurrence of lung cancer. So now, whenever I’m knitting, I feel her next to me and it calms me. I miss her so much.
Another fantastic giveaway!
I taught myself to crochet with the help of a few youtube videos. My mom crochets and also showed me a couple of things but I mostly taught myself.

My mother taught me both. After she passed away when I had questions or could not figure out a stitch I went to my library for books.
My grandmother taught me to crochet pre-teen. When she passed away, I stopped, it reminded me of her too much. Then I picked it back up at 2 years ago and found the arthritis in my hands made it too painful to crochet, so I found someone (owner of our LYS) to teach me to knit, and I’ve not stopped since.
I started out teaching myself to knit but got many hints and tips from Judith Frein. I learned to crochet in a class at a LYS.

Wonderful gifts again this giveaway!
My mother & grandmother taught me to knit. Many, many years later, I taught myself to crochet.
My grandmother taught me to crochet as a child. I got my introduction to knitting at the age of 19. Crocheted only until reintroduced to knitting 6 years ago and have not stopped..I am completely obsessed!
My Maternal Grandmother taught me to crochet when I was 8. We started out with a pillowcase edging. I thought I would never get all the way around with the single crochet only to discover there was going to be another round to make the shells~!
I started knitting because of Laiken Katherine (a pre-teen in the same children’s cancer ward we met at the hospital) and my son, Nicholas. Laiken was a sweet young lady and her birthday was coming up. Her mom mentioned to me she was learning to knit when i asked for gift ideas. I was at a local craft store with my son when he said he also wanted to learn. I didn’t know how to knit and i told him if he wanted to learn how to knit, I would learn to teach him; or he could learn how to crotchet from his Great Grandmother. A fellow shopper overheard our conversation, and encouraged us that knitting was so much better than crotchet. She graciously took some knitting needles off of the shelf and some yarn, showed me how to cast on and do the knit stitch. I never got her name. So who ever she is, I am so thankful she took the time to show me. I purchased the “I taught myself how to knit” kit there and children knitting needles /yarn. I spent time teaching my son till he got too frustrated with it. 🙁 I have continued knitting at his hospital bedside and else where. I have learned more knitting skills from a fellow knitting co-worker, books, You-Tube and Knit Picks on line tutorials. There is something so comforting and calming when I have yarn in my hands. I always remember my grandmother and the perfect stranger at the craft store.
My sister showed me a basic knit when I was 7 or so and I tought myself how to crochet years ago 🙂
A close friend of mine taught me who passed away years ago..I think of her every time I crochet
My sister and mother in law have taught me how to knit. Just purchased “tiny” needles to learn how to make my own socks 🙂
I would love to win all this luciousness!
I first learned to cast on from my grandmother when I was six. My mother then taught me the basic knit stitch and to cast off the same year. It wasn’t for another 10 years that I gave it much more thought, but then when I was 16, I spent a fall making scarves for the whole family so I could practice the basic knit stitch until I could do it blindfolded. From there it was an on and off labor of love. Some times my mother would show me something, sometimes from a book or magazine, and then sometimes from the internet. I am now 28 years old and I can pretty much knit anything.
I can’t crochet for beans though. 🙂
I so love the variety of colours in each skein. <3
You make such lovely color decisions. Once I can get yarn again I will definitely put you tops on the list!

My mom taught me to knit (co, bo, knit, purl) when I was 7. It would be the only time she would used sticks and strings in my lifetime. My 12 year old friend taught me crochet when I was 11. After that, books, trial and error. And after 42 years I actually make stuff that doesn’t look handknit. Yay for me.
My aunt taught me crochet, and I taught myself to knit.
My Grandmother taught me to crochet when I about 10 years old. She crocheted afghans. I love to crochet s variety of items but love making unique gifts for family and friends.
I taught myself to knit – with a little help from my mother and grandmother. The first thing I made at age 11 was a (rather holey) jumper for guide camp 🙂
I’ve always knitted ever since then and I learnt how to combat the holes (dropped stitches).
I’m planning to learn crochet over this summer break.
I had to teach myself to crochet, as being a left-hander in a family full of righties defeated every single attempt at teaching. Thank you, YouTube! My grandma taught me how to knit (I knit right-handed for some reason) when I was a very young girl. I had to refresh those skills two years ago when I decided to pick up the needles again 🙂
I taught myself to crochet forty years ago and finally taught myself continental style knitting twenty years later. Your yarns look luscious!
I learned from a little green “how to” booklet. It had knitting, crochet, and tatting. Could never catch on to tatting but have knit and crocheted for over 40 years!
My grandmother (Gam-Gam) taught me to knit when I was about 10 and really wasn’t ready for it. But she taught me the basics, and when I was ready to start again (about 10 years ago) I purchased books to relearn and expand my horizons. My crocheting was completely self taught. But now, thanks to YouTube and all the other lovely classes on the internet, I can learn even more.

You actually taught me how to knit! I sat with your video for days pausing and replaying until I mastered it 🙂 then my order came from you and I couldn’t wait to get started!!!! I’ve known how to crochet since I was eighteen and have enjoyed teaching my daughters. I’ve always wanted to knit though but was too scared. Thank you for your help with that!
I learned in 4-H,by my parents. Both my dad and mom knit. My mom does a little crocheting. And now I enjoy doing both. But what I love the most is redoing/changing a pattern and designing some of my own patterns.
I.m a new follower and have been salivating over your colorways. It.s almost a pavlovian respons when I see a new post!
my mother taught me the basics
When I was child my grandma made very elaborate Macrame, and I always loved to watch her. When I became a mom (a little over two years ago), and was given plants that were split from my great grandma’s originals, I decided to try making a few Macrame hangers. I surprised myself, they turned out beautiful, and it was such a relaxing process. From there, I taught myself Crochet using a lot of YouTube videos, along with a book and gorgeous set of hooks my husband bought for me. I started learning to Knit about a week ago from YOU Chandi. 🙂 I love all of your videos and keep re-watching them. Your work is amazing. I hope I hope I can create projects as beautiful one day. I’d love to learn to dye and spin! I would be so greatful to win this gift! The colors are just beautiful, the bag so pretty and I’m in need of a second pair of needles. My mom has asked me to teach her, and I hope that my son and daughter will take interest. My son now watches me and says, “momma making pretty, I touch?” Thanks so much for your great videos, they really help.

My mom TRIED to teach me to knit, and I have a few friends who taught me to Crochet 🙂
I would so love to win this…both my grandmother and aunt taught me how to knit when I was around 10 years old. I’m a lefty and they are right-handed so it was a challenge. I had to mirror them but I’m so thankful for them and their willingness to teach me. I picked up knitting about 4 years ago as a full time hobby and fall more in love with it and yarn all the time!
I love seeing all of your projects and how much you love what you do! Thanks for sharing it with us 🙂
The mother of a next door friend taught me basic knitting when I was about six years old. My friend was a tomboy and could have cared less about knitting. I taught myself to crochet as a teenager, and made a dress, which I wore over a lining to a wedding in my first year of university. Back at knitting since I’ve retired last year, for 5 grandchildren.
I was in my early 20’s and the youngest farm wife around by at least 15yrs. The older, 60+, ladies were meeting at the bar (yes, the only place in town to grab a burger or coffee) to craft on Monday afternoons and invited me. They were making such beautiful crocheted items and I had mentioned I’d love to learn….most did not read patterns and said they wished they had learned. I’m a teacher by trade so I drove 75mi to the nearest library, checked out a juvenile book on how to crochet, bought an ugly 50cent skein of orange RH on clearance and a G hook. I practiced making swatches and frogging them for about two months when these lovely ladies said, “when are you going to finally make something”…LOL Because I wanted to know it all right away my first project was the LA 63 squares afghan….it is still in use today!!! I am 47 now and have become a ‘yarn snob’ and still hookin’.

Knitting eluded me until I took one class and the instructor taught me continental style. Then I took off. Again, I just practiced and learned by following patterns and increasing my knowledge through reading.
Not everyone can learn this way, I realize this because I eventually learned to teach at a LYS. And every knitting/crochet group I ever attend, I usually learn a tip or trick or some suggestion that adds to my internal knowledge. This is why I chose YarnCraft for my passion. I will always be challenged. It never gets dull. Although, right now I need to live to be 152 to finish my current queue 🙂
Love the sharing you do – one day I hope to be able to afford the yarn (and the shipping!!). Luck of the draw living in Canada I guess. Keep up the great posts – they are fun.

I was taught original by my great grandmother as a teenager and then reintroduced to the awesomeness of knitting by my mother in law. Now it’s an addiction lol.
YouTube! I learned to crochet via various YouTube channels. after years of knitting exclusively, I picked up the hook and learned crochet, I’ve never looked back! I learned to knit using a wonderful joanns crafting book.
You want to know who taught me to knit – my Mom – when I was about nine years old…there were scarves all over the house. I taught myself to read patterns – no small feat, since both my Mom and I are left-handed – my best friend in high school taught me to crochet!!
Would love to be able to knit with your yarns!
I taught myself how to knit and crochet via Youtube and KnittingHelp.com ^_^
All of your colors are amazing and would love to work with some!
Hi,
I just received my first order and it is beautiful. Who taught me how to knit and crochet? My grandma started teaching me knitting when I was a young child though was never able to finish. I am mostly self taught on knitting and self taught on crocheting (and still learning new stitches and trying to learn how to read directions).
Thank you for the beautiful pics and great ideas you offer along with the fabulous yarns. Where the hearts desire the body follows certainly applies to your products. I am so excited to see what I can make in the future.
Blessings,
Dawn
My grandmother taught me to crochet, ove 40 years ago.
I learned to knit in college from my friend Laura. All she knew was the backwards loop cast-on and the knit stitch. That first scarf was over 13″ wide and over 10′ long. I tied the yarn together at the stripes because I did not know about weaving in the ends. I still have that scarf so I can look back at where I started.
My mother. After she passed away when I had questions/problems I researched them in books.
My mom taught me to knit when I was young. Then when I came home from college and she showed me all the new sweaters she had made, I decided it was time for me to pick up my knitting needles again. I use to go to a knit shop close to work on my lunch hours and knit with the ladies and eat my lunch.
I’ve been crocheting as long as I can remember—my Grandma did doilies and my Aunt Jenny taught me to chain…. started knitting with Aunt Mel and have never looked back 🙂
My mom, grandma, and great aunt (grandma’s sister) taught me to knit when I was about 8 or 9. We would all sit in the living room and spend the day knitting. My first projects were scarves that never seemed to be straight. That’s a great memory to have. I stopped for a long time and learned to crochet in high school. When my father became ill, I stopped at a lys just to look, bought some yarn and have been knitting since. Dad passed away in 2009.
I am so hooked on your yarn!!!
I was in the last knitting class held by a LYS that closed. I truly miss that store, but I am very thankful for what I learned. I am now considering learning crochet, so thank you Chandi for the videos on your YouTube channel.
I’m a self-taught knitter and spinner, and I just bought my first weaving loom – watch out, world! Haha! Thanks for a beautiful giveaway! xoxo
I think my mother initially showed me how to crochet. But mostly I taught myself! I crochet almost every day.
I taught myself to crochet with books and especially with tutorials. Trying to improve my skills as I go – absolutely love creating hats, scarves and amigurami. Working up to blankets and more complex patterns!
My Mom taught me how to knit when I was five years old. 55 years later I find it relaxing and fun to create fabric from natural fibers! Thank you for offering such a great prize for the drawing!
I <3 <3 <3 Expression Fiber Arts! Hope I win!
My maternal grand mother, and my mom. I was about 10 years old and I remember seeing my grandma crochet like a maniac. I told her I wanted to help her and she had me practicing doing chains over and over to “loosen the hand” . Much later, in college, my mom taught me again (I had stopped crocheting for years, and had forgotten some stuff). My grandma is a very talented crocheter. She can pick up patterns, create her own patterns, and sometimes even free styles her own stiches. I love her, and everytime i crochet i feel connected to her even though she lives in mexico. Now I’m back to my beloved crochet, and I am teching myself to knit thanks to your videos, but I gotta say, as a crochet-er…I find knitting very frustrating. Hahaha so its back to basics with that.
~christy
I taught myself to crochet after my son was diagnosed to be a juvenile diabetic so i could earn some for his insulin fund and hospital bills.
Grandmother YouTube and books
Hi Chandi! You asked how we learned to knit and or crochet. I am proud to be bistitchual! I learned to crochet on my grandma’s screened in front porch with a hook my grandpa made from a dowel rod. This in itself is a wonderful story but the way I learned to knit is even cooler. I was about 10 years old and used to ride my bike around our block because that was my “allowed” area and everyday there was an older woman who would sit on her front porch and knit. I would pass her many times a day when one day I got up my nerve to stop and ask her that dreaded kid question” What you doing?” She told me to come and see what she was making. It was a beautiful blue sweater but it seemed odd to me because all I knew there was crochet. I told her about my crocheting with grandma and she told me about learning to knit in “her” country before coming to America. She offered to teach me to knit, just to come back with yarn and needles the next day. After that I could hardly wait to go see her every day so I could sit and learn from her and her about her life. I continued to go and stitch with her until her passing. She became so much more to me than just an “old lady” on a porch and now every time that I pick up my knitting needles I think lovingly of a woman who opened her heart and shared her love of the craft to me. Thank you, Patti Blake
My college roommate taught me to crochet my senior year. I have taught myself to knit using YouTube. Your tutorial on the purl stitch is the best one I have come across. You also taught me how to knit with the yarn held in my left hand (is that continental?), which feels more natural since I learned to crochet first.
I don’t facebook, so can’t get the rest of the entries 🙁
I was in the craft section of a department store one day, bored to pieces and looking for something to do when I came across a teach yourself to knit book. I thought “ok”. So glad I did

It was my mom who taught me to crochet, at age 7. I learned how to knit at 32 from my BFF 🙂
Taught in childhood (several times) by my grandmother who knit all her life, knit for four generations of us, knit even as she went blind, feeling her way through simpler pieces as her world darkened. After a house fire I inherited her needles and I like to think they hold some echo of the thousands of stitches she put on them, all that time & love & good intentions for her lucky recipients. Sure wish she were still here to consult & to show my FOs. She’d have been glad one of us took it up in the end.
My aunt Edita taught me the basics of knitting and my grandma Edita (yes both share the same name) taught me the basics of crochet. The rest I am learning on the internet and books.
My mom taught me the basic chain and single crochet, but everything else I’ve learned from youtube videos in the last 3 years. It’s kind of a highlight for me to be selfsufficient!!

Hi Chandi!
Did you know that I found your website by searching for the word rainbow?! Well, ok almost, it was rainbow crochet. You rock, because you’re self taught, it’s tough but a lot of fun when you finally get going right? I taught myself how to crochet by watching you tube, reading books, throwing all my supplies through the room (waaahhh frustration;) ) picking up the needle again and again. Started in may when a family member asked for a new sweater and didn’t stop untill today, I’m hooked. Also the knitting part. Learned the basics in school when I was about 6 years old. Never tried it again untill march this year. Then I knitted a big hot pink blanket!
For me the crochet and knitting help to brighten everything, it’s like a fluffy blanket bubble to dive into. And I can make other people happy too with my gifts.
Have a great day and a lot of fun with everything you’re doing,
Esther
My Aunt Sidney and I went to Sears for knitting lessons way back in the ’60s. We really learned a lot that I have used throughout the years . I taught myself to crochet .
My mom taught me how to crochet when I was 8 or 9, and while I liked the act of making things, I never felt like I was good at crochet. At 12, I bought myself a “teach yourself how to knit” book and fell in love with knitting. I continued to knit off and on, and then life got busy and I took a few years off. After I had my daughter in 2008 and major surgery in 2010, I started to look for something to do with any free time I had and took some knitting classes at a local yarn store to refresh my skills. I am now more addicted than ever, and always have at least one project on my needles at a time. To this day, my mom crochets and I knit and we admire each other’s skills at crafts we aren’t very good at ourselves.
My Memere taught me how to crochet & knit when I was about 10 years old. (now in my 40’s) I took to crochet more because I could do it faster. I’m now relearning how to knit again and prefer that more for things like socks and scarves.
Thanks for the chance to this giveaway.
Good luck everyone 🙂
A woman at the retirement center my grandmother ran taught me to crochet when I was 11, although she was a little worried about me being left handed. She turned out to be a great teacher, and I puttered along, crocheting a bit here and there, for the next 18 years. Then, I fell in love with my hooks! A friend’s daughter gave me a starter lesson in knitting 2 years ago, and I’ve been figuring the rest out for myself (thank you, YouTube tutorials).
I taught myself and pick up tips from friends and youtube!
I absolutely love the green in this giveaway! Gorgeous!
I took a couple of classes and then taught myself how to knit after my youngest daughter was born. I needed something to do when she was sleeping in my arms and knitting with circular needles is perfect!
I learned how to knit at a 4-h camp, I was then retaught/remembered at my local yarn store.
I learned to crochet by hanging out at our community center, the older ladies would let me sit in the room with them and watch, if I was quiet. I would then go home and practice and practice, now today many years later I sometimes have trouble reading a pattern, but I can look at the picture and can make a lot things. So I took what I learned and today I make chemo hats, baby hats, baby blankets and lapghans and donate them to local hospitals and cancer centers.
When I was about 11 or 12, I desperately wanted to learn to knit. A woman from church came over to teach me, and I was a dismal failure. In looking at my sad little “square,” she made an off-hand comment about needing to know crochet to fix where I had gone wrong. The lessons stopped soon after, and then I found my mom’s old crochet pattern booklets from the 70’s, and her old G hook. I sat in my room for a couple hours and taught myself to crochet from those books. More than 20 years later I am now selling the things I make and loving every second of it!
I learned to crochet with you tube

My mother taught me to knit when I was about 8 years old. About the same time, my Aunt Mary, who is left handed taught me, who is not, to crochet. She’s would demonstrate, and then hand it to me, and I would turn it around and go the opposite way.
I love the yarn you produce. It is so unique and has such a lovely hand. I’ve made many things, most of them gifts, but would like to make some things to keep.
Various people taught me the basics of crochet at different times in my life, my mom, a roommate, my grandma. Two years ago it finally clicked and I taught myself everything else I needed to know, with the help of the internet. Now I knit, loom knit, crochet, create jewelry with bead weaving, and next up is learning how to sew!
I learned to knit and crochet after I moved to Wyoming and experienced my first real winter (9 harsh months of it)! I was eight and could not sit still (nor can I now for very long) and learning to knit kept my wiggles in check. Now, working with beautiful fiber and fabric daily soothes the stresses of work (I am a high school teacher).

Hi
Im enter the contest and im from denmark and hoping for im allowed to win ☺️
My mom taught me to knit when I was 5 because I had such bad asthma that I was often too sick to play with other kids. I picked it up easily and by the time I was 9 was knitting sweaters for myself. My most satisfying project was finished up in December 2012…a twin size Philadelphia Flyers bedspread for my son without a pattern. When he was in 8th grade, he told me that there was nothing I could knit that he would ever want! Haha. I took that as a challenge! It took me 4 years and I used him as a consultant to make sure I got the logo right. Right up until he open the box from Santa on Christmas morning, he thought it was for his cousin. I cannot tell you how many time he admitted he was jealous that it was for his cousin!! The look on his face was the best Christmas present I ever got!
Now, I am knitting myself a sundress and I’m hoping to be able to wear it to my youngest son’s graduation party in July!

My Mom taught me how to knit the very basics…Mom was an incredibly talented knitter who often designed her own sweater patterns. I would want to knit something while I was babysitting while in high school, so would get my Mom to cast on for me, then I would take the knitting with me to work on while I babysat.
One night I finished what had been cast on for me, and after several frustrating attempts managed to cast on the sleeve for the sweater and I haven’t looked back.

I have been crocheting for 33 years when pregnant with my oldest I determined I would teach myself and crochet a baby blanket. I got patterns and set out to learn but most patterns are geared to right handed people and I am definitely a lefty. It took me a while to branch out and make stuff other than scarves, but I learned and have made many a-thing for friends and family. My mom taught me to knit when I was very young, but I forgot about a year after. Then, when I was in my early teens, my friend’s mom Karen taught me again, and this time, it stuck. I began spending more and more time with her, and soon we were teaching ourselves to spin our own yarn together. Then we were buying angora rabbits. We began dyeing and weaving, although knitting and spinning remained our primary pursuits, and soon we were going to local craft fairs and selling our stuff. Now I’m 24, I live in a different country, but my yarn stash, crafting supplies, and spinning wheel remain my most treasured possessions!

A lady from church taught my sisters and I when we were in grade school, but we didn’t do much after that. My Mom tried to teach me to crochet, but at that age the small hook and thread she had for doilies was way to hard for my small hands to handle. In high school one of the teachers provided us with a vest pattern and helped us to learn all the stitches to make the vest. I finished that vest and made many more. I have been crocheting ever since. I bought an instruction book on knitting several years back and when I want to knit I just pull out the book for help. Kind of like riding a bicycle. lol
I was taught to crochet through 4H and when I needed more help, my aunt and my mother helped me! I love that 20 years plus after I am still learning new things all the time!

I took a class a couple of summers ago to learn to crochet, but I kinda gave up because they looked at me differently because I was left handed, and I don’t think they wanted to deal with me, I think I was the only lefty in the room that day so I learn from YouTube. I learned to knit from the HR lady at my last job, but once again I go to YouTube to learn and get the hang of it. 🙂 I really enjoy doing both and think they are super fun. Taught myself to crochet but it’s not as easy to teach myself to knit. But I love all sorts of yarn!
My mother taught me as a young child the basics except how to read a pattern. I picked it back up over 20 years ago while pregnant with my oldest child. I thought myself to read patterns and new stitches and haven’t put it down yet.
My Mom TRIED to teach me when I was little. didn’t pick it up until several years ago, and took to it like a fish to water, it’s my passion! I design patterns now for other enthusiasts 🙂 Sadly, I lost my Mom to Cancer years ago she never had the chance to see what I accomplished or what an inspiration she was.

I want to win for once
My grandmother taught me to knit when I was 8. I taught my daughters 3 years ago. My oldest, who is now 17, taught herself to crochet AND started her own custom knit/crochet business, called KnitsForNotes. The money she raised from this business last year paid for her tuition to attend the Boston Conservatory vocal-choral intensive. She leaves next Sunday for two weeks!
I watched a friend trying to teach another friend. After watching a few minutes I just picked up her needles and stated doing it. It was like I already knew how.
Well – being a type A – I saw a picture of a pretty knitted lace baby dress and thought – what the heck – I can read and follow instructions. Knowing only how to cast on it was some challenge I presented myself. That was many, many years ago and the half finished baby dress is still in a closet somewhere. So I decided to learn from scratch and I did. Now I order your yarn to make lace shawls and in fact I just ordered some – can’t remember the name. So bad as I have quite a yarn stash but as I see another pattern, I fall in love and just have to get yarn for it. It may take a few more years of my life to do them all – but what the hey – retired now and I have the time. Now that I think about it – I ordered and received Sunken Treasure and I know I ordered something else – beautiful pink and cream. Oh what fun it is and how hard on the budget.
l learned in 4-h

Fortunately for me, my aunt filled in the gap and taught me to crochet after the other lady moved and it has been my favorite past-time ever since.
Chandi, I love your yarn! The Juliet has been my favorite, for a while I have been yearning for some. I wish you blessings wherever you move, and we in Alaska will miss your presence. Alaska will be a shade less colorful without you, but I have a hunch that you have big things in your future, and although Alaska is big, sometimes you have to go outside to achieve those big dreams.
God bless you and your husband! We will all be watching to see all the great things the future holds for you.
I am a fairly new to knitting. A group was started at our church and I wasn’t sure I wanted to join it, but it was my next door neighbor that started the group so I said OK. Well I am afraid I am addicted now. I don’t want to cook or clean any more. I just want to knit.
Loving your yarns and can hardly wait to get my order from you.

Well its kinda hard to explain, my guelita (spanish for grandma) taught me how to embroider first. She got me a pattern of a magnolia flower, she did a little bit first, then I did a little bit. At the end of the day my fingers hurt, I was doing this at maybe 9, 10 years old. Then a few years later I was getting into sewing, and I took a home ec class in middle school. I really liked that, I was the best in my class and the fastest also, I made pj’s, a bag, and a stuffed animal that we donated to a school for the kids. In told my guelita about the class and she pulled out things she had made from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. There were dresses, skirts, bathing suits, quilted blankets, stuffed animals, curtains, everything you could imagine. When I was looking at the stuffed animals I noticed there were a few with some weird patterns, I asked her what it was. She told me she had knitted them. Later that day we went to Hobby Lobby and got bags of yarn and she was teaching me again, that was hard for me. But day by day I got better. I started with practice pieces first, like an oven mitt. But after a month or two I was making more harder things, and the last thing I made with her was a tinny stuffed bear. I still have it. During the same time I started knitting I told my Aunt Linda, and she went crazy, She pulled out old sweaters ans scarves and started teaching me too. She showed me different techniques and all the sizes of the needles, and the different kinds of yarn, etc. It was a lot to take in from two different people at once. But, I got through it. It was a nice experience, and now I sometimes pick up the needles and get going at it again.
I learned mostly from a book.
My fourth grade teacher taught me to knit. I didn’t want to go outside for recess, so I stayed inside and she taught me.

My Grandma taught me to knit and crochet when I was VERY young – always with love and the patience of a saint!! When she was 80, she was still knitting and crocheting bits and pieces that she sold so that she could donate funds to “the old folk!!” She knitted and crocheted tea cosies (I still have the remnants of one that must be at least 50 years old) and lapghans and egg cosies and all sorts of things like that.
I learned from my mom when I was too young to actually remember much about learning it! She was a master and left me with some very good skills.

My great Auntie Mary taught me how to knit and crochet as soon as I was old enough to hold the hook or needles….I used to love to watch her hands as she worked…the way she touched the yarn, there was love there that just fascinated me! She cast a spell on me, that, to this day remains unbroken! And even though Auntie Mary passed on more than 20 years ago, I can’t help but think of her every time I touch something that she lovingly created for one of us! So many of which have stood the test of time and look as beautiful today as the day she finished them….maybe even more so…….!
