This beginner friendly, oversized vest is quick to knit in bulky-weight yarn, cozy without feeling fussy, and perfect for layering over your favorite tops or wearing on its own as a sleeveless statement piece. It’s simple, snuggly, stylish, and such a satisfying project for the season!

Imogene was designed by Jane Vanselous. When asked about the inspiration for this pattern, she said, “Imogene is a generously sized, casual vest. Knit with bulky yarn, this vest knits up fairly quickly. Combinations of knit and purl stitches form textural interest, while also keeping it appropriate for an adventurous beginner. The vest is designed to fall just below the high hip. It may easily be lengthened or shortened to a cropped style.”

“Construction begins with the front and back ribbed hem, knit flat. These are then joined, and the vest is knit in the round to the armholes. Binding off at the underarm allows for the front and back to be knit flat to the shoulders. The shoulders are then joined using a three-needle bind off. The stitch pattern used at the armhole edges creates a neat rolled edge, so that the addition of the neckband is all that is required to finish the vest.”

This is an Adventurous Beginner to Intermediate level pattern that is perfect for knitters who are ready to learn some new skills or stitch combinations. Concepts include basic garment construction, working in the round and flat, working in pattern stitch, and finishing and blocking techniques. This pattern includes written instructions only, as well as a schematic.

Imogene is available in 10 sizes, which correspond to finished bust measurements of 34.5 (36.5, 41, 43.5) (48, 52.5, 57) (59.5, 64, 68.5)” / 87.5 (92.5, 104, 110.5) (122, 133.5, 145) (151, 162.5, 174) cm. The vest is designed to be worn with 5 – 7” (13 – 18 cm) positive ease, so choose a finished bust size that is 5 – 7” (13 – 18 cm) larger than your actual bust measurement. Both samples were shortened by 1” and are shown in Size 3 with 6” positive ease.

The Full-Length Version shown here was made with Mayan Gold Buttery Bulky, and the Cropped Version was made with Nutmeg Buttery Bulky. You will need 3 – 8 skeins of Buttery Bulky yarn, depending on the size you select and which version you knit.
