Hello, my cherished friend! I want to share with you a beautiful, knitted shawl pattern called Crystal Roads. This incredible shawl was designed by Susan Gressman, and it uses our Sincere Sock yarn. Read on to learn more!

Regarding her debut design for Expression Fiber Arts, Susan said, “This design takes basic stitches and combines them in unique ways. This triangular shawl is a relaxing knit but has enough variety to keep you engaged and excited to reach the next section. You will use three colors to explore basic lace and then see a pattern unfold, as you add mosaic knitting with highlights using twisted stitches.

The inspiration for the shawl chart names began with the mosaic pattern. Susan said that it reminded her of the many paths, twists, turns, and dead ends we all face on our journey through life. The Four Direction Lace symbolizes the beginning (and sometimes the middle and the end) of our journey when it seems like we are being pulled in many different directions. Susan noted that it’s important to explore all of them before deciding on our main path. When life gets complicated, it helps to take time to just breathe, hence the Inhale – Exhale title, and allow your Heartbeat to settle into a restorative rhythm. Finally, with hard work and a little bit of luck, we reach a level of Tranquility.”

This Advanced level pattern is for the adventurous knitter who loves to tackle something a bit more complicated. This pattern is for those knitters who have experience working with lace, cables, mosaic designs, twisted stitches, and reading charts.”

Crystal Roads uses our Sincere Sock yarn. Sincere Sock is a delightfully soft, sweet, and pleasant fingering weight yarn, and it is made up of 75% Superwash Merino Wool and 25% Nylon.

The sample shown used approximately 1180 yards (1079 m) total and is shown in our Blue Crystal Hues kit.

However, you can make this shawl with any three contrasting colors that you desire.

Due to the high contrast of these colors, it is strongly advised that you steam block your shawl to limit color bleed.

We filmed a video tutorial for you showing you how to read a chart in a triangle shawl, and I’ll be demonstrating a few rows of the Tranquility section. Take a look:

This Advanced level pattern contains both written and charted instructions. Please note, however, that the stitch patterns are charted only. The shawl begins with a Garter tab cast on and is finished with an I-cord bind off.
