Hello, my little dewdrop! It’s time for another sister pattern! Inspired by its knitted sister, Wine Country, is the crocheted pattern, Trade Winds.
Trade Winds is a beautiful easy and versatile crochet pattern designed by Jane Vanselous. This Adventurous Beginner to Intermediate level pattern us for those crocheters who are ready to learn some new skills or stitch combinations. Stitches include: sc, dc, changing colors, creating i-cords.
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – H. Jackson Brown Jr.
Jane was inspired by this quote and says, “I love the essence of this quote and think that we should all try to challenge ourselves to try new things. It also seems very appropriate, as this yarn has me dreaming of sparkling turquoise waters somewhere in a tropical paradise.”
This project utilizes a simple technique that may be used to produce a wide variety of effects. By using 3 different yarns and crocheting just one row with each, the correct yarn is always where it needs to be to work the next row. The yarns may be different colors and different weights. In this design, we chose 3 different yarns that are all in the same color. With the addition of a few crocheted i-cords and/or well placed seams, this may be worn as a scarf, shawl, cowl, 2 styles of poncho, head scarf, and shrug. The stitch pattern is very easy to work and produces a soft, stretchy fabric.
Make it with of our soft and cuddly 3 skein kits for a warm but light treat! Don’t be afraid to mix and match the weights of different yarns. The kit features 1 skein of each: (A) Resilient Sock (4 oz, 400 yds), (B) Sparkle DK (3.5 oz, 275 yds), (C) Pearlescent Fingering (4 oz, 550 yds).
We have filmed a video tutorial for you showing you how to work this pattern and how to make the i-cords.

I would love to play with the Trade Winds pattern, but I prefer it written. I don’t have patience for the video.
Sure thing! You can find it here: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/products/trade-winds.html
I am making this right now as a gift for the surgeon who cut out my cancer last year. Against all the odds I have made a full recovery and I owe her a huge debt of gratitude. I adore this pattern, and have been looking for something like this for nearly a year – another internet search and there it was, the perfect pattern. Not only that, but in a place with the most beautiful yarns. Just dreamy and totally irresistible. Chandi, thank you!
💕
I would love to follow along on you tube, but you only do a small portion of the pattern. It would be nice if you could at least say say how many ch for the full pattern. I know your selling the pattern .

Hi there Beautiful 💫 Thank you for your Awesomeness 🤗 I like your suggestion for a specific yarn please.? Probably for this pattern or any other shawl pattern.I try to describe what i am looking for.Living in Florida, makes my love for crocheting not that easy, when it comes to wearing and showing off amazing work and patterns…. So,I am looking for coolness lol, some shimmery, flowing, none itchy or thick feeling yarn.Hopefully you can understand what I am trying describe.I am from Germany and live in Florida for 20 years, and I still can’t exactly find the right words at times.I appreciate your help, and can’t wait for your expertise ☺️ Sincerely,Manuela
A few of our fingering-weight yarns would probably work for what you’re describing. Oasis Camel Silk Fingering is a beautiful camel/silk blend. It has an incredible drape and shimmer and is good for warmer weather: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/categories/fingering/oasis-camel-silk-fingering.html
Pearlescent Fingering is also a great choice: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/categories/fingering/pearlescent-fingering-1.html
It’s a single-ply blend of 50% Superwash Merino Wool and 50% Mulberry Silk. It’s super soft with an iridescent, shimmering glow. It also makes shawls with beautiful drape.
We also have more Ephemeral Fingering yarn coming later this month. It’s a plant-based blend of Pima Cotton and Lyocell (a plant-based fiber). It’s incredibly soft, too, with great drape and flowiness for shawls, and with a lot of shimmer from the Lyocell. It’s also ideal for warmer weather.
Any of these would be amazing for a shawl. In regards to the Trade Wind shawl, that pattern calls for three different yarn bases, but you could make it with just one type of yarn if you wanted to. Hope that helps!
I really enjoyed crocheting the Trade Winds 7 n 1 awesomely beautiful shawl !!!
This very magical shawl is going to make very unique and thoughtful gifts that is sure to brighten one’s day.
Hi Cathy.
I never learned how to read patterns even if I got this one would not maje sense to me. Could you share how many stiches has the chain base if possible?
This pattern casts on as follows: “with skein A, fdc 67. Hope that helps.
So your YouTube of this pattern said 27 , if I wanna make more wider , even number is better ? Or uneven number ?
Hi Ayumi, thank you for your question. The Trade Winds design can be adjusted/made wider by adding a multiple of 10 stitches with the minimum of 27. So any number like 37, 47, 57, 67, 77, and so on will work. Hope this answers your question.
Have a wonderful day.
Hi Chandi! Can you please tell us the interval/count so we can increase the width of the trade winds shawl if we want? Thank you! 🙏🏻🙂
Hi Katie,
thank yo for your question. I’m happy to help with that.
The stitch pattern is a multiple of 10 with a minimum of 27 stitches. Meaning you can make it wider by adding multiples of 10 to the original 67 fdc, like 77 or 87.
I hope this makes sense and answers your questions. Please, let us know if we can help you further.
Have a wonderful day! – Johanna 💕
Hi Johanna! That’s exactly what I needed to know! Thank you! Have a wonderful easter/long weekend! 🙂
