But since the age of 5 I learned to knit, crochet, embroider, needlepoint, crossstitch, ribbon crochet, sew, tatt, quilt, and so much more. I learned there are somethings in this world that are more important than things you buy. Those are the ones created with love.

I’m grateful for the following list, which are all parts of one thing – a good life.
That my family and I have always been watched over and kept safe.
That the bad time were never THAT bad, though they may have felt that way at the time.
That we’ve always had what we need, and enough to share with others.
That we’ve been there to lend a hand to friends and family, but even more so to strangers.
That others have been there to help and share with us.
That there are good people everywhere, and I’ve been lucky enough to know several.

When I was diagnosed with MS in 1998, I was so afraid I was going to lose feeling and functionality of my left hand. My disease has progressed (I retired from teaching in 2012) but my hands still work. I’m grateful my Mom taught me how to knit so I would be able to create something wonderful with this beautiful yarn.
I am a rapid cycling manic/depressive and have been on every medication and spend thousands of dollars in therapy to no avail. Then I picked up my knitting needles and crochet hooks and remembered my great aunts and great grandmother working with yarn and making such beautiful things. To my amazement, I found that working with these simple tools, having to pay attention to what I was doing and the anticipation of the finished product, quieted my mind, stilled my thoughts, and brought me such peace. Thinking of our foremothers and fathers sitting around the fire in the evening, knitting and crocheting sweaters, socks, shawls and other items is just fascinating to me. It’s simply amazing that with basically two needles or a hook and some yarn, they were able to make pieces like those we see with Shetland Lace, Estonian lace, and others. I am so very grateful that I have a wonderful hubby that tolerates my yarn and my projects, the healing that I find when working on a piece, and all the men and women that work to keep the yarn arts alive in this age of industrialized, assembly line production.

I am grateful for my family. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. They raised me perfectly and I think I grew up great. But I know people are reading comments other people put so hear this; if your child’s grades suddenly start dropping, don’t get mad. It could be a mental issue. Don’t blame them and hit them for it. Listen to them first. Then get them tested if you can afford it. And I mean DROPPING. Straight A’s to sudden C’s or D’s. Also, even after working medication, the news of them being mentally disabled is hard to deal with. They might not be the same happy child as before. I want to raise awareness of this. Mental disabilities. Please don’t blame your child. It’s already hard for them because they’re still trying their hardest just like before. It’s just never good enough.

Five years ago I became seriously ill. I was given a 10% chance of living. Before this I was just floating through life, going where the wind blew me, that sort of thing. But then I was thrown into this life and death health scare. Believe me, you can do a lot of soul searching at a time like that and I kept coming back to the one person who had been with me through all of it. He was right there holding my hand with tears in his eyes. I’m sure you’ve guessed it, the “he” that I’m speaking of is my husband. Next month we will be celebrating 23 years married. I am grateful that I have my rescue pup to be at my side everyday. I wake in the morning and we just cuddle. My children are grown and out of the house, my husband at work, so Savanah is my buddy. I take her with me to my aging parents house which always cheers things up. My father has heart problems and can barely walk on his own, my mother has her health issues too, but now her memory is really declining. All the responsibility is starting to fall upon me and not only is it sad to watch, and hard to keep them going, but I too have heart valve problems and diabetes. This is where I am grateful for Savanah, I am 62 and she keeps me going. Yes I’m grateful I wake up each day, that I can be there for my parents, and that they are still here with me. When you get older you think of the word grateful more as the word blessing. Yes, if I received this yarn, it would be a blessing too?

This may sound odd but I’m grateful to my illness, I have severe M.E and am mostly housebound. This has given me the opportunity to become more creative. Prior to illness I was so busy – work, studies, travelling, social life, voluntary work etc I had no spare time. Suddenly I became ill and spent a lot of time in bed, I needed something to occupy this time so I discovered crafting. Firstly, card making and cross stitch then sewing and now crochet. I’ve been learning to crochet for the past 4 years, it’s been a very long slow process. Aspects of my illness makes learning new things very difficult such as short-term memory loss. Chandi – I love your FB and IG pages and they inspire me all the time, thank you xx
I am grateful for my husband who supports my crafting “addiction” and my son who enjoys the benefits of my hobbies/textile arts, that he’ll ask me to make things for him. My daughter may have autism but I’m grateful she is healthy and so sweet and selfless. I am grateful for the loving support of my husband and my family. Knitting and crochet have become my healing therapy and brought me back to the basics of the old ways my foremothers used to do each and every day.
There are so many things I’m grateful for I’m not even sure where to begin.

My family!
Sometimes with the amount of anxiety I face on a daily basis, trying to lead a “normal” life is a long series of battles, and in that chaos, it can be very difficult to be able to stop and focus on the positive. That’s why I’ve grown such a love of the fiber arts over the years, because they help me do just that–stop and focus on the positive. Not to mention also that it’s very relaxing! I both knit and crochet, and I want to expand my learning to dyeing and spinning yarn. I’m grateful for my family who understands me. I’m grateful also for my husband who is my steady foundation and shelter from the storms of life. I’m grateful to my few friends who don’t judge me for my faults, including my fiber arts group that like to meet up at my favorite local LYS.
