Hello, my beautiful friend! I’m so excited to announce our 2026 Winter Knit and Read Along! We’ll join together on Ravelry to knit the stunning Tender shawl pattern, while also reading Eowyn Ivey’s The Snow Child together. Plus, there will be prizes at the end of our event, so I hope you’ll keep reading to learn how you can sign up and join in on all the fun!
Our featured pattern for the Winter Knit and Read Along is Tender, which was designed by Carolyn Currier. When asked about this design, Carolyn said, “Some feelings are too large for words. Tender begins where language ends. Worked from the top down, this crescent shawl traces a long journey — beginning in the deep cold blues of loss and longing, moving through frost and pale birch light, and arriving finally, through warm gold and into the quiet earth. Delicate rows of eyelets follow the curve of the crescent, while three stripes of snowflakes bloom across the fabric. The silk drapes like something barely there. Wear it like a whisper. Wear it like a held breath.”
“Healing is not forgetting. It is learning, slowly, to be gentle with the weight of what you carry. Be tender with what you love. Be tender with yourself.”
This is an Intermediate level pattern and is for knitters who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include garter tab cast on, knit, purl, yo, k2tog, and kyok, (p3tog, yo, p3tog). The pattern includes written instructions and comes with a video tutorial.
Tender is knit with our divine Allure Fingering yarn, which is made from 100% Mulberry Silk. There is truly nothing quite like working with pure silk! It has a naturally cool, fluid feel in your hands, a luminous glow that seems to catch the light from every angle, and a drape that moves like water. Silk is both strong and elegant, creating fabric that feels sumptuous against the skin and wears beautifully over time. Every stitch feels refined, special, and quietly luxurious, turning even the simplest project into something extraordinary.
The sample shown here was knit with one Northern Wild Hues Allure Fingering Kit [218 yds/200 m per skein (2,834 yds / 2,600 m per 13-skein kit)]. The colors were used in the following order: A) Unspoken Longing, B) Child of Snow, C) The Wild Girl, D) Frozen Riverbed, E) Snowbound Twilight, F) Held by Snow, G) Winter’s Breath, H) Birch Ghost, I) Breath Between Worlds, J) Moon Over Alaska, K) Silent Forest, L) Born of Winter, and M) Tracks in the Snow. Gauge is important in this pattern. Please take the time to work a blocked gauge swatch, as you may run out of yarn otherwise.
We made a video in which I show how to knit all the special stitches used in this pattern and share more about our 2026 Winter Knit and Read Along event. Take a look to learn all about it!
