Hello, my sweet ray of sunshine! Today, I have a unique, knitted shawl pattern that is both striking and super fun to make. If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at embellished knitting, then this is the pattern for you!  Keep reading to learn all about this week’s beautiful, new shawl pattern!

Plaidage was designed by Candy Key. When asked about her pattern, she said, “Plaidage is a warm, cozy shawl that will wrap you up so beautifully and show off the plaid. Plaid means “a pattern of unevenly spaced, repeated stripes crossing at right angles”. “Age” added to a word means “indicating a collection, set, or group.” So, plaidage is a group or collection of unevenly spaced, repeated stripes crossing at right angles.”

“This shawl is totally knit stitch throughout. Then you block it and let it dry before weaving yarn through the stitches in the opposite direction that you knitted. Using a tapestry needle and with the shawl body pinned down, you create the plaid. This shawl comes to life as you add the thread embellishment, which also becomes the fringe on either end of the shawl. Lovely and fun to create!”

This is an Intermediate level pattern that is perfect for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include: basic stitches, working with more than one yarn color at the same time, surface embellishment, and adding fringe.

Plaidage is knitted with our scrumptious Alpaca Silk DK yarn. It’s one of my favorite yarn bases of all the dreamy yarns we offer! Alpaca Silk DK is squishy and cuddly, cushy and huggably soft! Snuggly and warm, long-wearing and draping, Alpaca Silk DK is a heavenly yarn that is ultra-soft with a shimmering glow from the silk. A gorgeous, 4-ply blend of 50% baby alpaca and 50% mulberry silk, it’s ideal for next-to-skin projects. This DK-weight yarn is super versatile and works wonderfully for both garments and accessories and has 230 yds/ 210 m per skein.

The sample shown here was made with colors: C1) Arctic, C2) Tawny Port, C3) Abyss, C4) Northern Saw Whet Owl, and C5) Clary Sage Alpaca Silk DK. The sample shown used approximately 1125 yds/1030 m total (C1: 320 yds/293 m, C2: 320 yds/293 m, C3: 120 yds/110 m, C4: 165 yds/151 m, and C5: 200 yds/183 m).

We made a video showing how to block and add the embellishment and fringe to the shawl. Take a look!
