Hello, my sweet! Today, I have a super fun, incredibly colorful, knitted shlanket pattern that is going to give you hours upon hours of joy as you knit it. Keep reading to learn all about this week’s pattern!
Horology was designed by Pam Meek. When asked about her pattern, she said, “Horology is the study and measurement of time. I have always been fascinated by clocks and timekeeping beginning in my school days when I learned how various ancient cultures used water clocks to track the passage of time. Inspired by a repeating lace pattern called Ginkgo Leaves and knitted with the Zodiac Hues Luster Sport Mini Kit, this pattern will hopefully delight you for many hours to come.”
This is an Intermediate level pattern that is perfect for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include color changes, lace stitches, and adding optional beads.
Horology is knitted with our Zodiac Hues Luster Sport Mini Kit [approx. 175 yds/160 m per skein (2100 yds/1920 m per 12-skein kit)]. Our beautifully shimmering and soft Luster Sport yarn is the perfect choice for this scrumptious shlanket. Once you’ve worked with Luster Sport, you’re going to fall head over heels in love with its yummy, squishy goodness! Luster Sport is a blend of 50% Superwash Merino Wool and 50% Lyocell, a plant fiber that provides the glow of silk without the price, and the shine is out-of-this-world stunning! Luster Sport has 395 yds/361 m per full-sized skein, and our Luster Sport Mini yarn has approximately 175 yds/160 m per 50-gram skein.
The sample shown used approximately 1966 yds/1798 m total: Color A: 175 yds/160 m, Color B: 168 yds/154 m, Colors C – J: 160 yds/146 m each, Color K: 168 yds/154 m, and Color L: 175 yds/ 160 m. Avoid using Colors A, B, K, or L when making your gauge swatch. The sample shown here was knitted using the colors in this order: magenta, dark red, red, orange, yellow, green, light blue-green, teal, dark blue, blue, cool violet, and warm purple.
We made a video showing how to knit this shawl/blanket, including how to add beads. So grab your needles and some yarn, and follow along with me!

HI – this is beautiful! I’d like to know what kind of beads you used? Are they all the same? Are they sort of “crystal” (see-through) to get the sparkle? Hard to tell looking at the video. Thanks!
Ooops! Never mind – Just reviewed the pattern and I see that there is a full description of the beads (size, type, manufacturer, etc.) in the pattern itself. Thank you!
No worries at all! Glad that you found the info you were looking for 💕
Hi. I am a Libra! I love this shawl so much! 🙂
I love this pattern! I am practicing it now, just taught myself how to knit…
I am a Taurus. I would love to get your yarn someday, but my husband is not quite on the same page.
Hello, this is my next project, I’m just waiting on the Velvet Chocolate Hues kit and the beads to come in. How do you get 40 rows in colors B & K, and 38 rows on colors C-J?
I love your yarn and patterns!
Hi Daphne,
thanks for tour message. That’s easy, you will work rows 1-14 until you have 36 rows of color A, e.g. and then start the transition. For color C-J just start the color transition 2 rows sooner than the other colors at row 34.
I hope this makes sense. Have a nice day! – Johanna 💛
Hello! This is my next project and I have a question. I know how to get the 40 rows of colors A&L, but how did you get 40 rows on colors B and K, and 38 rows of colors C-J?
Thank you!
I’m not sure I understand the transition rows to change colors. Are they done in pattern as rows 1-14?
Hi Sue,
thank you for your message, I’ll do my best to help! Yes, the transition is done in pattern as rows 1-14, meaning after the Color Changes section you will continue with Rows 9-14 in color B and then start Rows 1-14 again.
I hope this explains it and makes sense.
Please, let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. – Johanna 💕
I am so excited to make this shlanket (great word!) I am pretty new to knitting and was wondering if you have a tutorial for changing colors and how to add the new color/hide the color you aren’t using as you transition? For example, where does color B go when you go back to A for two rows? Thank you!
Hi Elle, thank you for your message. We have tutorials on how to carry yarn along the edge when using several colors. You can find it here here: https://blog.expressionfiberarts.com/2018/08/24/muscadine-shawl-pattern-easy-and-adjustable/
Enjoy making Horology and have a nice day! – Johanna 💕
Do the 8 rows of garter st border count for the 40 rows of the pattern body?
Hi Daphne, thanks for your question. Yes, I think that’s correct. I hope this helps.
Have a nice day! – Johanna 💕
Thank you for your reply!
Hi there! Being Dyslexic I am having problems with the directions. I knit the rows 1 thru 14. Then when it’s time to change colors, I knit rows 1 thru 8. Then start over again with 1 thru 14? or do I continue with rows 9 thru 14 and continue with the pattern?
Thanks
Hi Debbie, no problem at all! I’m happy to help. You continue with Rows 9-14 to stay in pattern.
I hope this answers your question. Have a lovely weekend! – Johanna 💚
