Hello, my beautiful blossom! I have two special treats for you today. First, our knit pattern this week is a striking circular shawl. I do hope you’ll read on to learn more about it! And the second treat is the release of our brand new limited edition Artistic Sport yarn!
Lumin was designed by Monica Wesley. When asked about the design of this shawl, Monica said, “Lumin is a knitted, circular pi shawl that features a radiating, lacy design and a subtle, gradient fade in three colors. The Lumin shawl is knitted flat using three colors of sport weight yarn. You’ll begin with an adjustable ring cast on, and then knit in the round across six sections. With each section, you’ll double the number of stitches, and double the number of rows, give or take a few rows. Three different, eyelet lace patterns create an open and airy, highly textured design.”
Now for the second treat! Lumin is made with our limited edition Artistic Sport yarn. Artistic Sport is a cushy, springy, light sport-weight yarn with a super fun, striped barber pole effect. Made from 100% Superwash Merino Wool, this 4-ply, machine washable yarn features two different colors of yarn plied into a scrumptiously soft, draping, and flowy yarn that is ideal for marled projects.
To knit Lumin, you will need one skein each of C1 and C2 and two skeins of C3. The sample shown here was knitted with Aesthetic (C1), Sublime (C2), and Adept (C3). All of the colors in the Artistic Sport collection complement each other and flow together to create gorgeous gradient fades.
The sample shown used 300 to 480 yds (274 to 439 m) of each color, approx. total 1061 yds/970 m; [C1: 300 yds/274 m, C2: 281 yds/257 m, & C3: 480 yds/439 m]. Because you will use nearly all of C1, you may wish to knit your gauge swatch in C3.
Be sure to order all you need for your project because once these colors are gone, they are gone!
This Intermediate level pattern is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include the Magic Ring cast on or other adjustable ring cast-on method (center out), lace stitches, and working with two colors at the same time and carrying yarn up the back of the work.
We filmed a video about this shawl and the limited edition Artistic Sport yarn that we used to make it. Take a look!

Hi Chandi,
The love and enthusiasm you put into your videos are inspiring. Can’t wait to try this round shawl. It will be first round one I’ve ever tried.
And the yarn colors look amazing!
Best, Pat
The yarn is just beautiful. I am going to order the yarn to make this pi shawl! The pattern is gorgeous also! Thank you so much for providing this therapy! Chandi, you and your staff and all of your designers are absolutely amazing!
I love this shawl! The colors are absolutely stunning. I don’t think I’m ready to tackle a knitting project of this complexity (I can crochet anything, but I’m new to knitting), but this new yarn base seems perfect for just about any project I can think of 🙂
Beautiful design 😍 love learning new techniques! Thank you! 🙂
The yarn colors are beautiful just like the rest of your yarns.
Wow!!! I am taken with this pattern…and the yarns are stunning! Such unusual designs, colors, yarns…no wonder I cannot put my knitting needles down!
I love this one I enjoyed making one of your other shawls and can’t wait to try this one I’ve already ordered the pattern. You are such a lovely friendly person and I think it’s your personality that makes it so easy to follow your patterns. I always feel so calm and relaxed listening to you. Thanku so much for taking the time for people like me 🥰xxx
The yarn looks absolutely gorgeous. Would love to get some and try and make the beautiful Lumin. I am a beginner/intermediate knitter but looking forward to the challenge.
This set is amazing. I already have so many ideas. My first thought was your grampa cardigan. You made it with twisted tweed, but I think the way the colors blend together, that pattern can take on a whole new life. I”m also a crocheter – and I can picture this yarn in moss stitch! maybe a sweater…but in my head, I’m seeing a shawl that looks like a fall-inspired watercolor painting.
You are so kind and VERY generous. I look forward to Fridays to see what you are offering, and then get all tingly inside!!!!!
I started the shawl and absolutely loving it.
I am having so much fun learning new skills, crating beautiful things, and connecting with other people as I travel through may knitting journey. I learned to knit four years ago and your yarns and patterns have been an important part of my process. I love gifting something to someone special that is made in EFA’s beautiful yarns and knowing that they will be as happy with the result as I was with the process.
The yarn looks and sounds amazing. I have never done a project like this but very much want to give it a whirl. Thank you for all of your inspirations that you gladly share with all of us. You and your husband are a great team.
Hello Chandi, I love this pattern and am ready to begin. I’ve bought yarn from Expression before for Entangle shawl and was totally thrilled with the end project. Try as I might I cannot find any yarn that is similar in my small town but managed to find ones that I think will be fine but the colors are not the same:(( I would love to be the lucky winner of the special yarn giveaway.
Thanks again for all the helpful videos too!
As always, the pattern and the your yarns are gorgeous!
Thank you for all you do…💕
Beautiful concept using barber pole yarn for this pattern.
Beautiful pattern and yarn. I’m working on Crossaster right now and would love to try a knitted circular shawl. Thanks for sharing!
In the pattern instruction for round 21, the instructions say S2KP, but in the glossary it says SK2P. Can you clarify which one I should be doing? I’ve not knit enough to know if it ends up being the same if I do either. Thank you!
Hi Niamh, thank you for your message. I’m happy to help.
We have corrected this in the updated version of the pattern a couple of weeks ago, so please download this version again. The instruction indicate SK2P now as in the abbreviation section.
I hope this answers your question. Have a lovely day! – Johanna 💕
This is a beautiful pattern. I plan on using Tea Room Hues Mid-Month Club February 2023 (mini skeins), plus an extra skein if needed. Do you have any recommendation on when to change the colors (6 – 7 colors). Thanks in advance.
Hi Crystal, thank you for your message. I’ve talked to Monica, the designer and she suggested the following:
“My suggestion would be that you switch colors either at the end of a section or at the end of the stitch pattern repeat within the section. I’d also probably try to do Sections A through C in one color if there’s enough yardage to do so and then Section D in one color.
Because the final rounds end up having almost 800 stitches per round, the differently colored sections towards the outer edges will be “thinner” rings and more “stripey” looking. Hope that helps.”
I hope it works out. Have a lovely day! – Johanna 💚
