I learnt to knit & crochet when I was younger, like around 7 or 8 years old. I did small projects like slippers and dish clothes.
Hello beautiful team 🌸☀️
My mom started me out with two needle mittens. Rough project for a beginner but I prevailed. She consistently knitted mittens year round and donated those to a program called Mittens for Kids. I am carrying on her legacy. Thank you.
The first thing I knit was Barbie clothes. I learned how to knit and crochet at about the age of 12. My mother taught me. That was almost 60 years ago. I have been knitting and crocheting since mostly for friends and family and community projects.
Among the first things I crocheted was a granny square shawl, in colors I loved. I crocheted while my first baby napped and later as he played, and my memories of learning crochet and later, knitting, are all mingled with memories of his early life
I think it was a pair of slippers that I knitted
The first thing I ever knitted was a red sweater for a child that had a set of three balloons on it, one each yellow, blue and green. I had a lot of fun making it, unfortunately I never got to see the child wear it.
The first thing I crocheted was 56 years ago. I don’t remember for sure what it was, but probably a blanket. The first and last thing I knitted was a sweater for my then-young son. By the time I finished it, he had outgrown it. Now I only crochet LOL.
That i remember? Probably the fingerknit full size blanket i sent to my husband when he was stationed in Kandahar. Or real knit, probably the baby blanket for his army buddys new kid the next christmas. Crochet was likely one of the hats i gifted hubs grandma made of alpaca from ice brand yarn.
The first thing I knit was a poncho for my kid at 3 years old. That was 20 years ago. Crochet was nearly 50 years ago and Grandma put me straight on the zigzag afghan. It was in greens, and d definitely a different gauge beginning to end but I finished it!
The first thing I crocheted was about 20 years ago and was a prayer shawl for someone who was going through a tough time. I have been “hooked” ever since – LOL!!
The first thing that I knit was a dish cloth about 22 years ago. Several years late, I learned to crochet. The first thing I crocheted was an stuffed pangolin for my son. He had just learned about pangolin and they became his favorite animal. The only pattern I could find was crochet, so I learned to crochet so I could make it for him.
A pale blue garter stitch scarf. My aunt bought the yarn and needles and taught me how to knit. That was more than 65 years ago.
Well, that question takes me back over 60 years! I’m sure whatever it was, it served no useful function. Fortunately I was taught by my very patient and talented mother. I always get a twinge when I hear people say they tried one of the “Learn To ….” kits, it turned out horrible, so they blamed themselves and gave up.
I’m going to fall back on what I tell anybody I’ve taught to craft. “The first thing you are going to make is EXPERIENCE. If we say “knit a hat” or “crochet a washcloth”, and it doesn’t turn out well, you’ll feel bad about failing. If we call it “experience, and you learn anything about what to do, and anything about what not to do, you’ll be successful. If your experience is also handy for washing dishes, keeping your head warm, or just keeping in a drawer for the memories, that’s a plus.” It’s all about managing expectations. After all, you weren’t ushered into the Kindergarten class, given a pen and a ream of paper and told to write a novel, were you? You need to learn your new yarncraft like you learned your letters, words and sentences.
I love this viewpoint! Wise words
The first project a made was the garter stitch scarf from the Stitch ‘n Bitch book!
thank you so much for such an opportunity , i pray that luck is on my side this october , i really love your yarn.
i my first crochet was a turtle neck crop top sweater and am just learning to knit as of now
I taught myself how to crochet through different you tube videos. So my first “project” ended up looking like a little rug that ended up in my daughter’s room. Once I got stitch counts down and color changes, I made a blanket for my mom!
The first item that I ever crocheted was a mug rug!
The first thing that comes to mind was a top I knit for my sister. I’m sure that wasn’t the very first thing, though, because I started crocheting years before I made that.
Hello, the first thing I ever knit was a scarf (with Mum’s help) then I had the idea to join scarves into a blanket. Unfortunately, I lost interest and gave Mum the yarn back. Then years later, I decided to try knitting again and made you guessed it, another scarf : ) caught the yarn bug many years later added in crochet and have been on a creating journey ever since.
The first thing I ever crocheted was a very lumpy hat. 🤣 Since then I’ve made a scarf, another hat and scarf, a very large cardigan, two pairs of dragon scale gloves, a shawl, and a “loaf” cat.
The first item I knitted was a seafarers scarf with help from a knitting group at church. My first crochet item was the double layered braided cowl for my daughter. My friend joked I picked a very challenging first project.
One of the first things I remember crocheting was a small, rectangular Santa pillow for my dad. I was around 11 or 12. I don’t remember where I learned to crochet. The first thing I knit was a drop stitch rectangular scarf/shawl thing. It did not end up rectangular. That thing is long gone.
The first thing I ever knit was a scarf and the first thing I ever crocheted was a little dress for my dog.
I grew up watching my mother knit and crochet a lot but I never had much interest. My wife has been knitting and crocheting for most of her life and often offered to teach me how to knit/crochet. My mother passed away to pancreatic cancer 7 years ago. About 5 years ago, I bought one of your beanie starter kits and “gifted” it to my wife as a Christmas gift (so that she could use it to teach me how to crochet). I made her a little jealous with how quickly I picked it up after making just one beanie, but she has always been extremely encouraging. Now we knit and crochet together all the time and I know my mom would be so proud.
The first thing I knit was a pair of fingerless mitts. I’ve been crocheting for so long that I don’t remember the first thing, but it was most likely a granny square. My grandma taught me when I was around 7. She would absolutely love all these beautiful yarns! Both my grandmothers were crocheters and I still have a chevron afghan that my mother’s mom made. I also have a cute blue and white bookworm that my other grandma (the one who taught me) made. 🙂
My first projects for both crochet and knitting were scarves. They were the easiest for me to get used to holding the hook/needles and I got to focus on one or two types of stitches.
The first thing I ever knitted was a pair of leg warmers.
We had a knitting teacher at the boarding school I attended back in the early 80s and she started everyone off on a garter stitch scarf or a garter stitch washcloth in your choice of color in Red Heart yarn. I chose the scarf in a bright ‘skipper’ blue. Funny the things you remember 😊 We advanced to pillows and blankets learning knit, purl, ribbing, cables, and more. To keep me engaged she helped me knit a sweater. She did all the color work and put it together and that sweater is still with me today! Thank goodness for Mrs. Seterdahl, life-long skill learned and great memories made ❤️
Oh man, I remember the first things I tried to knit as a kid but never finished. First was a scarf, that had many unintentional dropped stitches , lol.
Then I tried a hat, which was way too large for me so I tried this new cool stitch called knit 2 together, just whereever I felt like it! (It still did not fit…)
The first thing I ever finished was when I relearned how to knit during ye old lockdown. I still have it and use it! Its a chunky textured blanket!
Its funny to think back at my first attempts then!
Knitting really clicked after I came back to it, its such a fulfilling feeling to complete a project!
The first thing I ever crocheted was a headband. It was terribly wonky, but I was incredibly proud of my new skill.
My fist knit was a scarf that made if off the kneedles but ended up food for the moths before i could use it. LOL My first crochet item were granny squares! Many many grannies.
I only started to crochet a couple of years ago and the first thing I made was a baby blanket…sort of. I gave it to my cat since he isn’t very judgemental.
The first thing I ever crocheted was some simple fingerless gloves, and from there I went right into hats. For knitting, it was scarves.
The first thing I ever crocheted was a seemingly endless chain that went on the Christmas tree. I learned how to finger crochet from an American Girl Doll magazine, and took off from there.
The first thing I ever crocheted was my first daughter’s baby blanket. She’s 51 now, and I still have it.
I knitted a scarf for my teddy bear.
First thing I crocheted was snowflakes, with the tiny crochet thread and hook. Was what I wanted to make though so was very motivated to figure it out.
First thing I knit was a doll blanket, tiny, 4 inch square as a kid, I picked up knitting again recently and have completed a scarf.
The first thing I crocheted was a scarf. Years later the 1 learned to knit a scarf but with different stitches every few rows to practice! Lucky for me, the same woman who taught me to crochet taught me to knit. I caught on very quickly.
The first thing I crocheted was a blanket in the colors of my son’s hockey team. It took for stinking ever, but I finished it before he changed teams!
I can’t even remember what I made in the beginning – I was totally fascinated by mittens that my grandmother knitted and beautiful crocheted and tatted hankies that my great-aunt made. There were so many things to make – a sweater when I was in the 8th grade, then by the time I was a teenager, I fell in love with afghans! Made lots of those! Learned how to sew and made some of my clothes, then many, many more – I can’t even list these items! Later, I learned to do longarm quilting – and I also love to paint! There will never be enough time to do all the projects that I want to do – far too many interests – life is so full of wonders!
The first thing I ever knitted was a potholder. My friends’ mother knitted and several of us wanted to learn, so she started a 4-H knitting club. I remember making slippers for my sister, mother, and grandmother for Christmas that year.
The first thing I ever knitted was a doll’s scarf when I was 8 years old.
I learned to knit a dishcloth at my local public library when I was 45. 13 years later and still going strong.
The first thing I made was a knitted wash cloth. It was terrible haha but I still have it to this day holes and all!
My first crochet project was an afghan in double crochet. I didn’t realize how much the yarn would stretch, it became enormous! I still have it, when folded in half it’s twin bed sized. Lol
I learned to crochet from my mom as a child when I was about 9 years old (along with my brother age 10, my sisters age 8, 7, and 5 1/2). The first thing I made was a little round rug from Aunt Lydia’s Rug Yarn in 3 colors, and as I recall it was Magenta, Orange, and Aqua.
It was a bag I knitted with some yarn a saw in a shop in Venice. I instantly fell in love and had to buy it even though I didn’t know how to knit. That’s the reason I learnt.
I believe the first thing I knit (with help) was a doll blanket. First thing I crocheted was miles and miles of chain stitch 🙂
Another fabulous giveaway😍
To be completely honest, I have no idea what the first thing I knit was😳🤭But, the first thing I crocheted was a hat!
My first crochet project was a potholder that turned out about half the size it was supposed to, so I used it for my doll’s kitchen. My first knitting project was a scarf, and I picked a very fuzzy yarn so I could practice whatever stitches I wanted and nobody could see my mistakes. I ended with a different number of stitches and I still don’t know how it happened. But it was fun!
I think I first crocheted a dc afghan. I was about 17 yrs old. It was so much fun!
I was a child. Our neighbor was a knitter. She used to knit in the backyard. She taught me to knit a simple scarf with brown yarn.
The first thing I ever learned how to Crochet was a Small Afghan, my Late Mother taught me how to learn how to Crochet when my hubby and I were going through a unnecessary court battle with his ex-wife so he and I could get custody of his Son back in 1996, and I found out that Crochet was and still is the Best and Free Therapy ever. And, Yes I still have the Afghan pattern and the Afghan and I have used the Beautiful Stitch pattern to make Afghans for my hubby’s Family for the Holiday time in the past and my Late Best Friend from Church, now her Sister has all of the Crochet things that I had made my Late Best Friend.
The first thing I ever crocheted was a baby blanket for my nephew 😊
Happy autumn!
I can’t remember the very first thing I made, but when i picked up knitting again 5 years ago, it was too make a cardigan for my baby niece. Many sweaters and shawls and hats later, I still love knitting. Same for crochet. Even though there were some years when I never touched a hook, it’s been a part of my life since I was about 10 yo.
The first thing I evident was a scarf. The first thing I ever crocheted, I don’t really remember, but I think it was either a dishcloth or a baby blanket.
A granny square
The first thing I ever crocheted was an afghan made with the chevron stitch back in the 70’s!
I started crocheting about 20 years ago. I started with simple hats and mittens, small simple blankets and haven’t really strayed from those ha. I love all about you and your company! Thank you!
I started my crochet journey 50+ years ago, making baby blankets for friends and family. Still making them but now for the grand nieces and nephews!
I knit a scarf for my daughter. Yay for yarn giveaway!
First thing I ever knitted was a scarf. It was a hot mess, full of holes from unplanned yarnovers and a garter edge that periodically disappeared, but I finished it and still have it. When I get frustrated with patterns and make mistakes, It helps me remember how far I’ve come.
Sadly I do not remember the very first thing I ever knit but I am happy to say that over the past few years I’ve knit my first cardigan, first baby sweater, first pullover sweater and first colorwork hat. It’s been rewarding and the journey continues.
My first crocheted item was a very colorful scarf for my son and it kept getting narrower as I went. Not the best looking or even project.
First thing I ever crocheted was a scarf for my grandmother. I was 6yrs old at the time, and though it was absolutely horrible, she wore it every winter.
The first thing I crocheted was a coaster.
First thing I ever crocheted was a little dinosaur. Absolutely loved it and kept going. My goal is to learn to knit now- made a pumpkin but looking to try a shawl!
I knit my daughter a scarf out of fluffy yellow yarn.
In elementary school they made us knit a tiny toiletry bag, and I hated every minute of it. And look at me now, knitting for fun.
First knitting project was a scarf. I don’t remember my first crochet project. That was too long ago.
My first knitted item was a dish towel. I don’t remember my first crocheted item. I’m Peru much only crocheting now.
I remember very specifically. My cousin taught me how to crochet about 2 days before Christmas. She lent me a bunch of worsted Burnat yarn in cream and I went to town doing single, double and triple crochets in a row to make a throw blanket for my mom. I got it done at 1am Christmas morning. I was really proud! And that started it all.
I crocheted a doily.
My first yarny project was a crocheted scarf I made the summer my grandmother lived with me and taught me to crochet. It was a VERY-green green Red Heart yarn. I unraveled the project eventually and just found the skein more than 40 years later at my adult daughter’s home! That green yarn has made more things for beginners! LOL
My first project was knitting fingerless gloves in the round! I like to jump into the deep end. I picked a neutral beige/cream and it c looked like I’d broken both wrists. LOL
My first crochet, at age 7, was a chain. The entire skein…. a very long chain. My first knit was 11 years later, at 18, while pregnant with my first, I saw a cardigan pattern in Woman’s World magazine, and decided to learn to knit. The sweater and my son will be 40 this year, Neither is falling apart yet!
The first thing I started to knit was a garter stitch scarf. I think my mother knew I wouldn’t finish it because when I quickly became utterly bored with it she gathered the live stitches like the top of a hat and handed me a bonnet for my doll.
I don’t remember the first thing I made when I learned as a kid. When I picked up my hook again about a decade ago I made scarves. Everyone on my list got a scarf for Christmas that year.
I just started knitting this summer, and the first thing I made was stitch sampler cowl. I’m just starting to get good enough to consider using nice yarn!
First project i completed was a lap blanket. My grandmother taught me three stitches and thats how I started.
The first thing I knit was a garter stitch scarf in orange, red and yellow. Hideous!
The first thing I crochet was a Virus shawl
The first crochet item I made, at the age of seven, was definitely a chain, which got pulled out, and crocheted again, and pulled out, and crocheted again, and again, and again. My mom taught me my beginning crochet, and she only knew how to chain and slip stitch–pretty much impossible to make anything more than chains! Eventually, my sisters and I managed to improvise a tiny doll’s dress out of slip stitches. It was thick and stiff, but the doll wore it.
I had a similar experience with crochet at a similar age too! My mom only knew the chain part and we didn’t have a crochet hook so we just used our hands to form the loops. Every string I saw became a crochet chain, pillow tassles were a big one lol Years later a friend finally taught me and I was hooked!
First thing i ever knit was a guage swatch to learn knit and purl stitches. My sister taught me at 13 yo while I stayed with her over the summer.
First thing I ever knitted was a blanket!
It was supposed to be a stockinette eight inch square. I made it one inch before giving up. My needles kept falling out of my knitting, so I just kept knitting tighter and tighter until I couldn’t even insert the needle in the next stitch. But then, no one told my Mom and me that pink acrylic Dazzleaire yarn and slippery 14-inch aluminum straight needles weren’t the smartest combination for the small hands of an elementary school aged Girl Scout.
My goodness, that was in the 60’s. Probably a hairband or something for a Barbie doll lol
It was probably a crocheted potholder or attempted scarf. I also tried knitting a Barbie scarf. That was an experience. 🙂
In all honesty, I really cannot remember! Possibly a scarf when I first learnt to knit, but no idea when I first started crocheting.
My grandma taught me to knit when I was a kid and I made a headband.
I must have been about eight when my older cousin showed me how to crochet a doily. I was completely enchanted, and I went on to make those intricate, lacy doilies for the table and for the Easter basket we took to church to be blessed. We made them from ordinary white sewing thread on spools, because back then the shops didn’t sell any special supplies for crochet or knitting. Someone would simply show you the pattern for a doily as you worked – nobody ever wrote these things down. Sending you all my warmest regards
I learned to knit as a child, probably made some very bad peggy squares, and promptly forgot how to knit until I taught myself to crochet at age 38 then wondered about knitting socks….
J’ai commencé par le crochet avec ma maman des napperons
The first thing I ever crocheted was a blanket for my daughter. As soon as that was done I made another for my son. That was 20 years ago, and I have a hard time wrapping my brain around that.
My fisrt ever croched project was a chain that turned into a potholder. My first knit project was a scarf
I was fourteen and my best friend and I decided we wanted chuncky sweaters so we chose the yarn and the pattern and the needles. I think it took a week to make.
My first crochet project was a shawl when a teenager
I started with crocheting and other than wash cloths my first project was an afghan.
I started to learn how to crochet because I got a book with patterns for small and simple amigurumi. My first one was a little whale, because it had an easy shape <3
The first thing I every crocheted was a lap blanket and it was so ugly. LOL at least I can laugh about it now and I’ve gotten some what better.
I couldn’t understand crochet so I learned knitting first lol and knitted a baby sweater. I would love this giveaway for my 50th birthday this month!!!!!
The first thing I knit was a 4×4 ribbed scarf. No pattern or anything. It took foreeever lol.
The first thing I’ve knitted was a headband and two-coloured brioche scarf. And it was in spring, as I have just started my journey with knitting. Now I’m trying to knit a lace scarf/shawl ^^
I learned to crochet when I was 7 or 8 and of course my great Aunt that taught me wanted me to make a potholder but I was WAY more determined than that and while it took me an unimaginable amount of time I make a purple and white blanket which I still have and cherish !
I taught myself how to crochet. Fairly certain that the first thing I made was a potholder.
My great grandma taught me how to crochet over 40 years ago. I’m pretty sure the first thing we made was a scarf.
My Mom taught me to crochet when I was 11. The first thing I made was little halters and blankets for my Breyer horses. Then I made granny squares by the zillions. 😆 About 11 years after that I was a newlywed living in downtown Savannah, Ga. A LYS literally around the corner from my apartment I decided it was time to learn to knit. I knitted little baby blankets for my friends then I went on to hats and scarves.
My first knitted item was a sweater for my daughter. Had no idea what I was doing and decided to just knit until I hit the size of a too big for her sweater since I was not sure how long a sweater would take to knit. Still have it and love the memories it brings wash time I see it😊
My first projects were dishcloths to learn then moved onto a baby sweater.
The first thing that I knitted was a dishcloth. 🙂
Beautiful October colors!! I knit a baby blanket and crocheted a scarf when I was about 10 years old.
My first crochet project was a pair of coasters and placemats!
My mother-in-law taught me how to crochet back in the early 1970s. I think the first thing I made was an afghan as a Christmas gift for her. Now I am older than she was when she passed away, and I still miss her. Then I made another afghan, same pattern but different color, and I still have it and use it (it’s over 50 years old!). Currently I am working on the MCAL ARCOIRIS and a Porto Sweater using worsted weight EFA Dragon Lore yarn. I think the colors in your give-away yarn would make a beautiful shawl or wrap!
The first thing I ever knit was the “Waiting for rain” shawl! It was quite the challenge 😂😂
Boy! This one is really challenging my old memory! I have been knitting for over 60 years after teaching myself using a booklet from a yarn company. If I remember correctly my first project was a pair of mittens.
The very first thing I ever knitted or crocheted was a scarf.
I learned to crochet about 20 years ago; and the first thing I made was a blanket that ended up being long and narrow. I don’t think I have that blanket anymore, but I remember the frustration when I could not figure out where I had lost and gained stitches.
My first crochet project was a baby dress for my neice. It was almost 50 years ago.
The first thing I ever crocheted, aside from a handful of swatches to learn the stitches, was an alpaca scarf for the person I’d later marry. I was surprised that two whole skeins of bulky yarn made such a skinny scarf! (It was over 200 stitches long with an 8mm hook.) My spouse still wears it, though it’s miserably ragged now.
I started knitting and crocheting on the same day so I could learn them at the same time (had to prove someone who said you can’t do both wrong 😅). For crochet I started with just a “stitch scarf” – made a scarf of random stitches I wanted to learn – the basic single, half double, double and treble stitches, but also some more intricate ones. I just did it until it was long enough for a scarf. Knitting was a lot of test swatches and failings. My first truly finished knit project was actually the Step by Step sweater by Florence Miller.
I remember sitting on my grandmother’s couch (this would have been over 55 yrs ago), and her teaching me how to crochet. I think it was probably a small cloth.
Inspired by my mom, I crocheted a doily (un napperon in French). 😉
I was a teenager when my Mom taught me enough about crochet to make a few granny squares. I love that I got to help her finish my baby blanket after all those years. My aunt later taught me how to make a blanket. Blankets are my favorite projects to crochet.
Funnily enough, my first projects for both knit and crochet were blue scarves! Several years apart but a funny coincidence!
The first things I made were dolls clothes and gifts for my younger cousins – they must have been sick of all my knitted and crocheted presents… ;0)
I knitted a teddy bear in stockinette stitch and was instantly hooked!!
The first thing I ever crocheted was a little fox stuffed animal. My first attempt was a rug, but the fox was the first thing I completed
My first crochet project was over 40 years ago so I have no idea. My first knit was about 15 years ago, and I made a doll blanket for my toddler.
Gosh, the first thing I remember knitting was when I was a child – i knitted a jumper and then for some reason o stopped knitting. I stopped knitting for a long time and then started again to knit gnomes for babies my friends and family were having. Now I’m back to knitting jumpers and shawls-scarfes for myself. Love your patterns and yarns are so beautiful.
I started to knit in difficult times in my life. My old dog was very sick and I was desperately trying to help her.I have come to the point, that all my thoughts were only about meds, vet appointments and physiotherapy . I was scared and I have noticed that I made her also scared being this way. Accidentally I saw book with beautiful, lace socks and thought: maybe this could be our way stay close and calm. I have bought DPN, 2 Skeins of socks yarn and started to learn how to knit from the scratch. From this point we hang together, close, calm, supporting each other. The dog has gone, 14 years ago, Knitting stay and become my safe place, my meditation ritual and the medicine . I am very motivated to learn new techniques, patterns, construction. Knitting make me happy and a lot of people around, who can wear my socks, hats, sweaters, mittens – each one absolutely unique.
My first knit project was a scarf in vibrant purple, worsted weight yarn (the next three projects were scarves too, with a couple of hats thrown in for spice. My first crochet project was an amigurumi axolotl. Learning to size down my hook for the weight of yarn was a learning process. I gradually got better while making the next three amigurumi (a jellyfish, a unicorn, and another jellyfish).
I first learned how to knit, knitted a scarf, I was 10yo. My first crochet projects was a coin purse
I do not recall the first thing I think possibly a wee teddy bear. I could knit before we learnt it in school as my Mum tuaght me .
When I was in second grade, the teacher taught the entire class to knit so that we could knit slippers for our mothers for Mothers’ Day.
The first thing I ever made was a knit scarf with the pavilion pattern all over.
Mine was a granny square from a kit at Target.
Then I did and redid one of those Pink Sheep Designs crochet alongs from YouTube, over and over. It was then that I realized I can’t count hahahaha.
Then I did the Technicolor Dreamcoat for children. That went really well.
I honestly don’t remember the very first things I made because I was pretty young when I was taught..
But I DO remember my first major items.
When I was 9, I was making and selling crochet vests.
When I probably a junior or senior in HS, I knit a sweater..
It was made with an ombre yarn, fall colors, it pooled perfectly on the chest and back in what looked like a sunset.
Cowl collar, ribbed waist, bat-winged, 3/4 sleeve….put it on, fit perfectly!! Immediately ripped it back off. Read the yarn label of what would now be considered a “vintage” redheart yarn …”miscellaneous fibers”, smaller print ‘raw wool’, which I was extremely sensitive to at the time.
Let my bestie try it because she was “ok with wool”, she couldn’t wear it either. I still wonder what happened to it.
My 4th grade teacher taught the whole class to crochet. It was a very basic pattern with chains and sc stitches. I stopped when I had kids as life got so hectic. I picked it back up when my husband was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Now most of what I crochet is donated to others going through chemo.
My babysitter taught me to crochet when I was 8 yrs old, I made a red and white granny square cushion.
A doilly for a,school fair
I knitted a top for my daughter and crocheted an amigurumi toy for my kids. ❤️🙏
I dove right in and my first crochet project was a pair of socks ….absolutely stunning 😱🤣🤣 they are presently catnip toys…but I fell in love with the process and now I can crochet whatever I want…I started again with a dishcloth and blanket. Absolutely love knitting and crochet, first knitting was a lacy scarf.
Greetings from Canada,
So I was lucky enough to learn how to Crochet many years ago from a friend of mine who insisted that I also learn how to also read both a visual and written pattern and keep the project stitch perfect. Oh there were a few night shifts that I ripped out numerous rows because of one or two stitches. I practiced learning the basic stitches, turning and keeping straight edges by making wintertime scarves in each stitch type. Still playing around with knitting.
The first thing I ever knit was a summer tee. The first thing I ever crocheted was a floppy hat. I don’t crochet often now but I still knit regularly.
I’m a lefty and tried a few times to learn how to knit and crochet from friends and family members in my childhood, but was never able to catch on as all that tried to help were right handed. In my mid 30s I decided to try again, this time leaning into YouTube the first thing I knit was a very, very long scarf, and the first thing I crocheted was a tiny wash cloth. Over time I’ve gotten better at creating items of the appropriate size 🤣
I honestly can’t remember, but my sister taught me to crochet when I was about 10yrs old… so a LONG time ago… it was probably a scarf.
Craft is an important part of my life that was handed down from my grandmother, so I macrame too.
The first thing I crocheted was a *really* long yellow “rope” of chain stitch. I’m pretty certain it is still wound around the container of Lincoln Logs in the closet at my Mom’s.
It was a scarf following a video tutorial! I’m better at crochet than knitting, trying to improve more.
Oh my … my neighbor taught me how to crochet when I was around 8 or 9 yrs old. I crocheted a ripple blanket using whatever skein of yarn my mom would buy as I used one completely. It took me years to make, fits a full size bed, and I still have it & use it. Long time used.
I honestly can’t remember. It might have been a garter stitch scarf. My first clear memory of a specific project is a pair of gloves at the age of 10. I still remember how it annoyed me that I messed up the thumbs. One was too narrow and long, the other too short and wide. The rest of the fingers worked out great.
I believe the first thing I knitted was a Santa gnome in craft class in primary school at about age 9. We were supposed to be learning patchwork quilting , but I have always had a passionate dislike of sewing and since I was taught to knit at about age 5 I requested to embark upon my own project.
Up until that point I don’t think I ever actually created a finished project. But I was caught by the ability to create fabric out of wool and I never looked back .
My crochet journey did not really commence until much later in life, which started with baby blankets and clothing .
Now, not a day passes where I have not worked on something knitted or crocheted .
My first knit or crochet project was about 60 years ago, and I’m not sure what my first knit was, but the earliest one I remember was a “snoot boot”, a gag gift of a sort of nose sock with a tassel on the end. 10 year old me thought it was hilarious!
Hello! The first item I crocheted was a sorry limo dishcloth. Ny trebles were awful! lol!
What a shock to see the colorful Bat on a yarn site. Thanks for sharing your colorful out look on the world.
The first thing I ever knit was a scarf in red wool from my mother’s stash! Red was her favorite color so it was what there was “enough” of. That was 70 years ago and I am still working through my own stash 🙂
I first learned to crochet when I was 18. Haven’t picked up knotting just yet. Maybe one day. I don’t remember what my first project was. Probably a blanket or some granny squares.
I was 13 years old and I actually knit a dress. It fit terribly, but I did knit it.
The first thing I ever knitted was when I was 7 years old in Junior school and I knitted a pair a gloves with thumbs in, I was super proud of them.
I taught myself to sew, knit and crochet. The best thing I ever knitted was an aran Clan sweater for my brother. I love knitting lacework projects and cables.
The first things I ever knitted were a cowl and fingerless mittens. I started out with a pattern for the cowl about 4 years before I actually finished the cowl. I always wanted to learn how to knit, but never really pursued it for a variety of excuses. I mentioned it at work and one of my coworkers was an avid knitter. She offered to teach me how to knit. Not every knitter is also a teacher. Anyway, I found the yarn and needles a few years after I bought them, lost the pattern but began my journey with knitting on YouTube university. I totally vibed the cowl and mitts. My best friend is not ashamed to wear them when it’s really cold outside to walk the dogs. Chandi’s video above continental knitting was the one that made it click for me and I have been an EFA fan ever since.
My first attempt at knitting was a baby sweater. Then I learned to crochet and made many afghans.
I made a crochet scarf when I was a child.
I first started knitting about 3 years ago and my first project was a scarf I never finished! First finished project was a hat!
Learned to knit as a young girl from my great aunt. I believe it was a scarf. It’s been quite a while since then
I think the first think I ever crocheted was a very bad granny square and the first thing I knitted was a scarf. Both of these were a VERY long time ago and, luckily, I’ve improved since then .
My Grandma taught me to crochet Granny squares
The very first thing I knit was a dishcloth. 3 years later and it’s shawls, blankets, scarves, hats and sweaters. Knitting is now in my nlood and I am looking forward to learning to crochet.
I love yarn!! Sending good vibes.
My Mum taught me to knit when I was young- about 40 years ago. The first real project I knitted was a cardigan in rainbow 🌈 colors- each panel and sleeve in a different color. I knit knit knit and my Mum helped me with the shaping. I ended up wearing that cardigan throughout my college years!
I couldn’t tell you what the first thing I crochet was, but I do remember crocheting the shoulder strap for my violin case in 6th grade; I would have been 11, maybe 12. I started knitting in 2023 and the first project I made was a hat for my child. It was way too big but it was loved because I made it. Thank you for being you!
The traditional scarf! Then straight on to mittens on dpns.
In school I learned to crochet but I don’t remember what I made. I think we only learned some stitches. When I really ill at home and wasn’t able to focus on anything because of the constant waves of pain, not able to read or watch anything, I picked up a hook and some yarn. I needed to find joy in something, anything to have other than pain in my life. And I started to crochet a rose. Only by two or three stitches at a time. And the colour of the yarn, watching the stitches form, the leaves taking shape, it was bringing me so much joy and healing. I have crocheted many roses in different colours and colour combinations in those months.
The first things weren’t actual things LOL. I learned both as a child, so memories are vague. I remember knitting small tube babies at some point: body (= clothes) in one colour, face in another, tightening around the neck. Can’t remember how I did the faces, but I’m pretty sure I emboidered the hair. Later I both knit and crocheted fashion doll dresses.
I can still remember my first trial swatch of knitting from waaaay back in 2005. It was intended to be a rectangle swatch (it wasn’t). It was orange, likely a RedHeart acrylic scrap ball that someone had given me to practice with. The “rectangle” ended up very trapezoidal and Swiss cheesy, as one’s first attempts may be. I didn’t care though. I was so proud of this awful thing that I did myself that I gave it to my department head (we are teachers), who had helped teach me to knit, and I wrapped it around her water bottle as a super hero style cape (given it’s trapezoidal shape).. it surely went into the trash after I left her office but that was the first ever thing I knitted. A holey, bright orange, water bottle cape! When I teach new knitters and crocheters now and they’re dejected over the appearance of their first swatch, I share how much worse my first tries were, show them where I got to, and encourage them to keep going. It doesn’t take too long to get to doing decent work and they surely should be proud of their efforts!!
Such beautiful yarns!! I’m already thinking what I could make with these!! The first thing I ever knit was a super chunky blanket. Somehow I thought that giant yarn and needles would be easier. Hahaha!! The first thing I crocheted was a grant stitch baby blanket. I used the chenille yarn and learned we were going to really have to work on that relationship. Lol
The first thing I ever knit was a scarf for my Barbie doll when I was 9 years old. That was in the 1960’s. It was a decade later that I learned to crochet when I wanted to make a baby sweater.
My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was 9 years old. I actually made a little teddy bear! He was full of mistakes but I loved him. She also taught me to make hot pads for my mother in the kitchen. Many years later when I inherited her sewing box, the original pattern for those 3D hot pads was in it! I still have it today 😊
My first crochet item was sooooo long ago, I don’t remember. My first knit item was a pair of socks
I think it was probably a granny square. My mom taught me the basics of knit and crochet when I was around fourth grade. What I remember making most from my early years was making my own doll clothes. I learned sewing basics too but my Barbies had sweaters too!
So pretty! I started with dishcloths when I was young.
I learned to knit 25 years ago – a friend taught me. The first thing I knit was a dishcloth. Great way to learn techniques and new stitches. I taught myself how to crochet a few years after that. Today, O prefer to crochet mainly. Love making blankets!
I think the first thing I ever knit or crocheted each was a scarf. No one told me that doing a hat would be less time and the same amount of skill!
I first knitted a scarf out of variegated blue acrylic. I didn’t finish it because I got bored so my next piece was a sock made from worsted acrylic yarn, that was quiet the lesson in what different yarn weights meant!
I started knitting at very young age. My mom was a 4-H leader and I desperately wanted to be included with the older girls. In order to do so, my mom required me to sit and learn with them. My first project was a garter stitch potholder.
My first project I knitted was a pair of socks
My first project I crocheted was a blanket
I honestly can’t remember the first thing I knit. What I do remember is my very patient grandmother sitting next to me as I fumbled with her leftover yarn as I tried. I was probably five. The memories of of the time I spent with her meant much more than the outcome.
I first started with macrame & became obsessed with different knots then randomly bought knitting needles. Now I’m obsessed with all the different fibers & stitches. First thing I ever knitted as a very wide short scarf….reminded me of a table runner or place mat lol. Years later I I took it apart & crocheted my first blanket. It has opened the door to me truly enjoying crocheting/creating so many random things for my family.
I started crocheting by making hats. Once I got the hang of straight edges, I moved on to scarves and blankets and all sorts of other projects.
First thing I knit was a ski sweater for my Barbie doll – it was a kit I had received as a gift. My mom taught me the stitches.
I learned to loom knit in my 20s and started with baby hats, but never learned to knit with needles.
A few years ago, now in my 40s, I picked up crochet. After practicing the basic stitches for a day or two, I dove right into amigurumi and made a snowman. And it’s been nonstop ever since!
The first thing I made when I was a ‘tween’ was a crocheted blanket. Two giant red white and blue granny squares sewn together to make a twin bed size rectangle.
My dad claimed it because it was so warm, but said his toes always poked through. It went with him from NY to FL, and back to me years later.
I still have it – I’m no longer a tween – in my 60’s now. But every time I see that blanket, which I still use from time to time, I think of him.
My grandmother on my mother’s side taught me how to crochet when I was 7 years old. She first taught me how to crochet doilys, so I tackled one in white cotton which my mom proudly put underneath a lamp in our living room!
The first thing I ever crocheted was a dishcloth, the second was an amigurumi(sp?) bird
I was about 9 when we had to learn to knit at school and we’re given awful scratchy pink yarn to knit a baby’s pilcher. Yuk! My mother, and 2 aunts were all expecting babies – all of whom were boys. The ribbing was grey by the time my teacher had pulled it out at least 3 times. It never got worn by any baby. The aunts only produced boys, no girls…
I taught myself how to knit first, and I knit a lace scarf. Years later, I taught myself to crochet, and I think my first crochet project was also a scarf.
First thing I ever knitted was a very ugly garter stitch scarf that quickly got upgraded to a not-so-ugly headscarf. My grandmother taught me. I honestly don’t remember the first thing I ever crocheted, but it too was probably a scarf. By that point my grandmother had passed away, but left me all of her yarn tools, including her collection of crochet hooks. So I taught myself.
The first thing I crocheted was a safari amagurumi kit from Joann (RIP). My friend wanted a lioness. It was very crocked, but she loved it anyway 🥰
The first thing I knit was a simple sweater for my oldest son. I was absolutely amazed that it lasted long enough to be passed down to all four of my children.
I think I was around 8 when I first learned to knit and crochet and I remember crocheting a rectangle sewing it into a cylinder and slipped it onto my barbie as a dress!
The first thing I ever crocheted was a potholder! I was just learning how to crochet then. The next thing was a bikini top 🙂
First thing I ever knitted was a scarf 🧣 cozy and warm, I still have it 20+ years later
I knit a scarf in Germany in college, then picked up needles probably 15 years later for baby blankets.
My Grammy taught me to knit around age 10. She gave me some pink wool and I knit a pair of slippers flat and seamed them. They are long since worn out but forever a memory of my knitting journey.
I was taught to crochet by a dear old Italian lady when I was 20, which was 50 years ago. She taught me to make a “postage stamp” afghan and I made dozens of them over the years. Well years later I found out that the pattern is known as the C2C pattern. I have moved far beyond that simple pattern and have made many wearables and one of my favorite thing to crochet is socks. I thank my dear friend Millie for introducing me to hooking. Millie has been gone for many year, but I think of her every time yarn runs through my fingers.
The first thing I knitted was a pink coat and hat for my Barbie. My Grandma bought me the kit for Christmas and she taught me to knit. She is in my thoughts every time I puck up my needles.,❤️🧶
I remember that my first crochet piece was a coaster. I made it when I was 9 years old. Then, at 10, I worked on an endless knitted scarf.
I learned to crochet from my mom 30+ years ago. I’d watch her make these great big beautiful doilies for wedding gifts. She showed me how to make smaller snowflake versions for the Christmas tree.
When I was 8 or 9 my mom taught me to crochet and I made large pillows that I gifted to family members! My aunt still has the pillows I made her!
My first crocheted item was Pierre the Penguin by The Woobles. I learned to crochet by using their kits. 🙂
The first thing I ever knitted was a scarf (at 7 yrs old), and the first thing I ever crocheted was a placemat (at 30 yrs old)
My first crochet project was a full size afghan for my bed. It is beige and country blue hearts, and I still have it after forty some years.
I think the very first thing I knitted was when I was a child of about 8 were slippers. The first thing zi knitted as an adult was a sweater at a beginner’s knitting class!
The very first thing I ever knitted was a scarf. It was cheap yarn, and ugly green, but I still have it! It’s so funny to look at how tight I knit back then. Now my favorite patterns are lace.
I always love the colours you have!!!
First thing I ever crochet was a bag with the help of a YouTube tutorial. And the first written pattern was the trellis wrap. I also made that one for a friend but in different colours. Next challenge will be tunesian crochet. I saw a beautiful sample stich wrap and some beautiful yarn would be so lovely for that project.
The first thing I knitted was a baby blanket for a gift. Crochet was a very long time ago, probably a scarf or washcloth.
Does a rat’s nest count? 😆 Honestly, it was so long ago l, I don’t remember. Knowing me however, it was probably a mess l!
I crocheted clothes for my barbie dolls when I was a child
The first thing I ever made was a lumpy sampler full of mistakes. But the first thing I really made was a tiny triceratops amigurumi. My husband still has it on his desk.
When I first started knitting, I learned by making dishcloths. But my first project after that was a scarf.
A black wrap in the seed stitch pattern.
The first thing I knit was a Portuguese fisherman’s sweater. It was scratchy and acrylic but I loved it! Thanks so much for the opportunity to win some gorgeous yarn!
The first thing I ever knitted was s striped garter stitch scarf! It looked pretty bad, but I loved it!
The first thing I ever knit was an attempted scarf. It didn’t go well, but I fell in love with the craft and have steadily improved.
My first knitting project was a scarf.
My aunt taught me to crochet the chain stitch, I was about eight and my chain seemed to be about a mile long when I finally went to her to ask when it would turn into something. She then showed me single and double crochet stitches. No idea the first thing I made, I was happy to learn it and my creativity blossomed from that first lesson one random evening.
I used to tat and embroider. I had tried crochet and knitting as s kid, but it never stuck. But then one year, my bestie gave me a “knit your own mini ninja” kit for Christmas and I IMMEDIATELY went to youtube and didn’t stop until I found the knit tutorial that clicked.
I knitted a skarf at 10 years old
I crocheted an afghan- a big one!
I’m pretty sure the first thing I knit was some kind of scraggly scarf when I learned to knit as a kid, but the first thing I knit as an adult when I took up the hobby again was a hand puppet!
The first thing I crocheted was a baby blanket.
I started knitting in 2016, I was 22 and really wanted to knit my own sweater. The first thing I made was a scarf, followed by another scarf and then a blanket, ironically I didn’t end up making a sweater until years later
The first thing I learned to knit was a dishcloth from a pattern published in a Workbasket magazine. I had to teach myself and this was way before YouTube videos! My square turned out to be pear shaped but at least it was a start!
The first thing I knit was a shawl with 3 colours!
Scarf!
Te first thing I ever knitted was a cardigan for my baby doll when I was about 7, the first thing I ever crochet was a cushion cover for my couch in my first flat when I was 19.
I think it was a golden yellow wool scarf. But as this was more than 57 years ago, I am not quite sure!
The first thing I crocheted was a triangle scarf. I started crocheting a year ago!
The first think I ever knitted was *supposed* to be a scarf for my mom. It came out very wonky, more square than rectangle, and with random holes, dropped stitches, and unintentional increases!
One of the first things I crocheted was a pumpkin hat for my little black kitty-cat. She hates it, but it’s awfully cute!
hi Chandi! my first effort(s) were to make square, flat things; so swatching is one of my favorite things to do!! LOL I’ve come a long way – with many many thanks to Expression
Fiber Arts for being such a wonderful source for fine fibers 🙂
Love the question this month and love all the yarny goodness. My first and only knit project was a purse which I made when I was about 10. I don’t have a specific memory of my first crochet project, but I suspect it was a scarf. I only made scarves and blankets for many years.
I first crocheted a scarf while I was in college. I had watched my left-handed mother crochet, and she tried to teach me, but it just didnt click until I saw my best friend doing it right-handed. I learned to knit in college, too, and my first project was a rectangle of garter stitch for Afghans for Afghans, which should give you a good idea of when I learned! My friends would all head down to a local women’s house and we were taught how to knit for a cause!
a chain, I used it as a bracelet until it fell off.
I knit a very long scarf, after several failed attempts. Fortunately I was able to get assistance from the wonderful lady next door who helped me translate the little black and white photos in the instructions at the back of the pattern, into a skill that has brought me joy to this day.
She passed away a few years ago, but I will always remember her patience and kindness.
Goodness, too long ago to remember! My grandmother taught me and I just remember her helping me fix my mistakes 😬
I taught myself to crochet through YouTube videos and patterns. The first thing I tried was a small Amigurumi cat. I did finish and it was cute but it was lumpy and not like the picture at all. But I’ve gone on to make many more successful projects.
I was around 6 years old when my mother first taught me to crochet. My first attempt didn’t really turn out to be anything, just a very wavy rectangular-ish shape lol. When I next picked up crochet, in high school, I was able to make a scarf (it was still rather wavy though!).
I learned to knit as part of a Girl Scout badge over 70 years ago. We made squares for a blanket.
I learned crochet from my grandmother, young, and I don’t remember what my first project was.
She crafted many blankets, hats, and she loved making capes to wear.
The first thing I crocheted (about 50 years ago) was a chain (LOL). My first crochet project was a granny square sweater that I made for my sister 47 years ago. She still has it. My first knitted project 12 years ago was a scarf, even though I had learned to knit before I learned to crochet. I gave that scarf to my youngest son’s then girlfriend, who I hoped would one day be my daughter-in-law, but that’s a story for another day…
My grandmother taught me to crochet at a very young age – who knows what I made. Then learned to knit from a friend in college & that is too long ago to remember what my first project was also.
Mittens, instead of writing a paper due in college
First thing I ever crocheted was a blanket after my university roommate taught me how to crochet. Later on I got into woobles and just recently finish crocheting my first cocoon shrug.
The first thing I ever crocheted is book worms. My grandmother taught me how to crochet when I would stay summers with her. The first was book worms, then Barbie clothes. Now I make beautiful Afghans. These colors would be the showcase if I get picked. Fingers crossed
My first project was a knitted cowl. It came in a learning kit called a Full Hands Box and used Peace Fleece and hand painted straight US8 wood needles.
Gosh, it’s been so long ago, I can’t remember but I think it was sweater!
The first thing I knit was just a little practice square my Mom helped me learn on. I think she worked a few rows here and there to encourage me to keep trying, I was probable 8.
My first crochet project was a vest…think late 60’s and fringe. LOL My aunt taught a craft/crochet class at the local community enter.
The first thing I ever knitted was a hooded unicorn scarf for my daughter. I gave it to her when my son was born to celebrate her becoming a big sister. I had been curious about knitting for a while and I fell in love with the pattern. I had no idea what to do, so I found you tube videos on how to do the different stitches and fumbled my way through it. It turned out amazing, she loved that thing for years to come and it helped her feel like she was special too when everyone was cooing about her brand new baby brother.
The first thing that I ever knitted was bells. A simple square sewn together, gathered at one end with a jingle bell sewn into the top and then attached to a chained cord.
My Mom taught me how to knit, and the first item I ever made was a headband. I was so proud when I wore it to school – it matched my outfit. It was blue, my favorite color!
I learned to knit first but crochet followed soon after. The first thing I made using both methods was a small scarf. Neither was beautiful but I made both of them. I just retired and joined a new community. They have a group called stitchers who make things for various charities so that is how I would use the yarn if I win.
My aunt taught me how to knit when I was 12. I knitted a “Poor Boy” sweater (basically a two by two ribbing). It was yellow and short sleeved. Unfortunately, by the time I finished it, my body had changed and I couldn’t wear it. But, I loved knitting and went on to knit many garments that I could wear. I’ve been knitting and crocheting for 59 years! And I have the yarn stash to prove it.
The very first thing I ever knitted or crocheted was a block of the month kit afghan. It taught me to crochet in a very comprehensive way, and I had learned so so much by the time I finished!
I have been crafting for over 60 years. I was sitting on my grandma’s porch (visiting for the summer) and playing with yarn and hook. Grandma came outside and said chain so many stitches and then continued telling me row after row what to do right out of her thoughts and when I was finished, I had a (what I thought was beautiful) crocheted headband that I wore all summer long. From there on in I could not put my hooks down until my other grandma introduced me to knitting a few years later. Now I do both but still prefer crochet, all kinds. From dishcloths and afghans to doilies, tablecloths and curtains and clothing.
I made a very wonky garter stitch scarf. I must have been about 10 or 11. 🙂
I can’t remember the first thing I crocheted. As I learned when I was a child–probably a blanket for a doll or something like that. The first thing I knitted was a scarf for my sister.
Just think of the possibilities.
The first thing I ever crocheted was a chain. My mom taught me how to crochet a chain with my finger. I kept a small ball of pink yarn in my lunch box and would crochet and frog a chain for fun.
I learned to knit about 15 years ago.. (Late bloomer)..My first knit project was a scarf. Still have it..great reminder of how far I’ve come..
My mom taught me to crochet when i was 7 or 8, that was more than 60 years ago. I dont recall what i made, but it was most likely a simple scarf and granny squares 😆. These days i like a project that can challenge me.
I took a class where we made a bully weight shrug and a hat! Been knitting since:)
Many many years ago my mother in-law taught me to knit children’s mouse mittens! When she passed away I lost the joy of knitting, but years later learned to crochet while ill, and have been fascinated by ‘all the things’ ever since! I praise God for all the good I’ve learned through the years and all the joy I’ve received by watching people enjoy things I’ve made!
My mother and grandmother taught me to knit and sew when I was about 5. My grandfather, a master carpenter, made our needles! I think we started with scarves and slippers, then dishcloths. I think I knit my first sweater around age 10 and never stopped. Crochet is still a mystery!
The first thing I ever knit was a “dishcloth” on 13” aluminum straight needles with embroidery floss (hence the air quotes for dishcloth 🤣). My aunt “taught” me to cast on over the phone. It was a corner to corner style garter stitch cloth. So. Many. Dropped. Stitches!! It’s a wonder I kept going! Now I use actual yarn but I still have those ridiculous 13” long aluminum needles to remind me where i began!
1st think I ever crocheted was a blanket.
I first knitted when I was little- 5 years old. I think, it was probably a scarf but I remember knitting socks when I was 6. That was well over 60 years ago. I haven’t stopped, yet lol.
My first knit job was ambitious, I was fourteen and decided to do scarfs for every female member of the family and friend I had for Christmas. My Mom who is a knitting queen was proud of the results. With a few very late nights I managed to get seventeen scarfs done and handed out. With crochet, I picked up the hook to make a squares for a charity blanket project early last year, enjoyed playing with as many stitches as I could find to make the squares special and attractive for the recipients. After mastering a square, my first real project in crochet was a small shirt, probably 6 sizes larger than I’d planned as I’d not done a swatch, my stitches were nice and tidy but I over estimated my body size.. But, I’ve learned to go down in sizes… many sizes, in hooks. Despite being the queen of reworking things because they’re much too big for an elephant to wear, I’ll keep at it until it’s looking like the pattern says and I love it. I live in the UK and find myself on flights quite often so it’s sort of exploded into my favourite travel hobby.
This thread was a treat to read. Love the quirky yarn lady tales. Happy Crafting x
When I was in junior high school, my neighbor and I took a knitting class at a nearby Sears. We were the only kids there. The class project was a cardigan, and I made mine in a truly 1970s shade of gold.
My first real project was a large marshmallow Afghan. I was a Junior in HS and my Mom’s best friend had just finished one and was teaching my mom to make one. It was knit on US 18 straight bamboo needles with two strands of Dazzlairre worsted weight yarns held double which was about as soft an acrylic yarn as you could get in the late 80’s. The knit purl pattern was in 6 inch blocks to create a subtle checkered effect. And the Marshmallow name came from one yarn being cream and the other being a pastel. Mom’s was a soft dusty rose and still lives on the back of her living room couch. Mine is a soft mint green and while currently tucked away in a chest, still gets used in the winter.
A lap blanket in a learn to knit kit!
I was ambitious and knitted a scarf and hat for my mom.
Wow, probably about 57-58 years ago I learned both knitting and crocheting. I made lots of blankets for my toy poodle!
I learned to crochet during Covid. The first thing I crocheted was the Findley blanket. All one color, all single crochet. Kill me now, never again.
That’s difficult to recall since it was over 60 years ago. Mom always made us slippers so I am guessing that was the first thing I learned to make. Today I make mostly sweaters.
The first thing I knitted was a scarf that came in a kit. It was all acrylic and awful!
I really don’t remember the first thing I ever knit – I learned very young but then didn’t knit as a teen or young adult. I thing the first thing I knit when I came back to in my late 20’s was probably a baby blanket when my brother & sister started having kids before i did. Now that I’m in my 60’s I knit all kinds of things (also back to baby blankets now that those nieces and nephews are having kids of their own – but no grandkids yet).
The first thing I crochet was a rose where you make a long strand of petals then roll it up.
It’s been so long since I learned to crochet as a child. I probably crocheted a scarf, but the first thing I actually remember crocheting was a vest with some fringes when I was a teen (this was in the 1960’s).
At the end of the Vietnam War, I was evacuated to America from a US military base in Thailand, and ended up separated from my parents. I was placed with a family in Granite Falls while my parents were located. My English wasn’t good, and I was terrified. The sweet woman I stayed with taught me to crochet to keep my mind busy. The first thing I made was a horrible blue and green granny square blanket. It was itchy and stiff, and I hadn’t understood about burying my ends, so it had bits sticking out everywhere. I gave it to my mother when we were finally reunited, and it stayed on the foot of her bed, until she passed in 2000. Yarn became my love language, and still is.
Wow! This takes me back over half a century! The first thing I remember crocheting was a bottle cover for a large jar when I was seven or eight, and then I taught myself to knit and knit a (really awful looking, but it was my first try) scarf for my mom or dad for Christmas. And I’ve been knitting and crocheting ever since, along with all the other arts/crafts of sewing, quilting, cross stitch, embroidery, macrame, etc.. And I STILL love knitting and crocheting!
Thé first thing I ever crocheted was a blanket made with bright coloured circles bordered in white. I still love it!
I learned to crochet over 65 years ago; so I can’t recall what I made. Decided to learn to knit a couple of years ago. The first thing I made was a split-rib beanie for my daughter as a Christmas present. Boy, did I learn a lot about what not to do!
My grandmother taught me to crochet more than 50 years ago and I don’t remember exactly what I made back then. My first knitted project was a scarf.
A baby hat while I was pregnant
The first items I “knit” was spool knitting. We drove to visit the grandparents every summer, 3 long days in an un airconditioned station wagon. My mother and two older sisters knitting sweaters. My brother and I doing spool knitting. Mine was long enough to make a rug for a doll. Then I learned how to increase and decrease. I made nose warmers, with chained ear loops, and then a small pompom on the tip of the nose. I was so pleased that my grandma actually wore my creation.
Lots of beautiful things.
I was in grade school. Several of us went to a lady’s house after school. I knot a toilet paper roll cover. The base covered the roll. The top was in the shape of a poodle’s head with pom-poms.
The first thing I ever crocheted was a tiny hat and “stole” for my Barbie doll when I was about 8 or 9. Now I use your yarn to crochet special filled with love items for family and friends.
My mom taught me to knit 35 years ago after a catastrophic injury to my dominant hand – it was excellent therapy to maintain use of the hand according to the Physio!! First thing I knitted was a toque cause I couldn’t start anything easy in those days! Mom’s been gone a long time now but would have loved to have knitted her a super soft shawl for cool mornings!!
The first thing I ever made was a granny square when I was 5 or so — my Granny was teaching me how to crochet.
I first learned to knit in high school. There was a woman staying in town for a few months visiting her grandkids (I wish I remembered her name) and volunteered her services to the correspondence school I was at. She taught us all how to make garter stitch scarves, and I absolutely loved it. It took me a few years to make that scarf but I am forever grateful she took the time to teach us, and I try to pass that on to anyone with an interest! I was even able to teach my boss earlier this year and she is making her own garter stitch scarf! (Complete coincidence)
Thr first thing I ever knit was a washcloth, and my first crochet project was a granny square.
The first thing I ever knit 12 years ago was a scarf for my mother! It was a little wonky but I’ve learned a lot in those 12 years. I even learned to crochet about five years ago!
The first thing I crocheted was over 40 years ago. It was a rainy summer at my grandparents and one of my aunts decided we were going to learn to make wash cloths. It was a bit of a challenge for her as some of us were right handed and a few of us left handed. Mission accomplished thanks to her patience and a bribe of cookies at the end. I’m still crocheting and have passed the skill to my daughter and a few friends.
My first knitting project was knitting sqaures in fall colors for a blanket, over 53 years ago with my dear Grandmother.
I learned to crochet when I was 6. I found some pretty yarn and decided to make a blanket. Unfortunately it was rug yarn and incredibly scratchy. I have made many – much softer – projects since then both knitting and crochet.
The first thing I crocheted was a placemat in size 10 thread 70 years ago. The first knitted things were scarves for my children 50 years ago. I love both crafts and always have projects going in both. It’s my zen, my way of retaining sanity in this insane time.
The first thing that I ever knitted was the Wandering scarf/wrap. I decided to challenge myself to see if I would stick with it and enjoy it and to my surprise I was hooked 🤣and I haven’t looked back. This was February 2025 and it has been a wonderful journey thus far. Your videos have been so helpful to teaching me and giving me tips and tricks 🥰
At age 5, a wonky looking scarf! I was taught to knit by my mom and her mom – my beloved late Grandma!
I believe the item that I knit first was a scarf and the first crochet item was a Navaho afghan pattern. I still remember picking up the colors at Woolworths.
Crocheting in the fall and winter is the right time to pass those chilly days. I’ve done shawls and bed blankets. There are so many other things can be done also…. I just love it!
I started crocheting over 50 years ago, when I was a teenager, and it’s hard for me to remember back that far! I have a photo of me in a hat that I made with 5 granny squares when I was in high school, so maybe that was my first project…
When I was a kid, my mom would knit us slippers and she taught my how to knit and purl and I made simple scarfs. Later when my Grandmother came to visit she taught me how to crochet and the first project I made after making lots of chains, was a granny square blanket.
I learned to knit when I was 12, from my English teacher who taught knitting during homeroom. My first project was a scarf that I had planned to gift to my father but it came out so uneven that I never finished it. I didn’t knit for several years after that. Now there are so many resources to help and encourage you to press on.
A granny square blanket. My grandmother taught me to crochet and i just kept going around and around. I was seven
The first thing I crocheted was an octopus, and the first thing I knitted was a beanie.
The first thing I can actually remember crocheting was a mile a minute afghan in shades of pink and green trimmed in off white or eggshell that I started at eight years old and took me til I was eleven years old to finish. I still have it forty one years later in very good condition. I don’t remember the first thing I knit, but I did knit several doll sweaters for my American Girl Dolls a decade or so ago.
The first thing I knitted was a scarf, straight stockinette, so it curled so bad 😂
First item I ever crocheted was a blocked blanket
Crocheted a very long chain
I too cannot remember what it was I first knitted some 60 years ago. Most likely it was a scarf? What I do remember is my sweet Gramma who was the very patient teacher❤️
First knitted item – a bright green garter stitch scarf for my Barbie doll. This was more than 50 years ago!
The first thing I ever knitted was a scarf, of course. Though if I’m coaching a new knitter, I recommend washcloths- small enough to learn the whole process and repeatable practice. So, basically, swatching lol.
First thing I ever crocheted was one of those spiral, wiggly book marks.
I knit a hat and scarf about 13 years ago. They were so bad, I quit knitting and only picked it back up about 2 years ago.
My first knit project was a scarf, out of acrylic variegated green yarn. I think I was 9 and my mother showed me how. I never saw her knit. Weird.
Newly married 60 yrs ago, I thought it would be fun to knit my husband a sweater. I knew how to crochet so how hard could knitting be, right? I didn’t have a job at the time so had time to concentrate on learning a new skill. I purchased a nordic-style sweater pattern, blue & white yarn & straight knitting needles. Note: In the late 1960’s, there was no such thing as a computer or YouTube so I learned to knit from a small booklet. After much ado, I figured out how to hold the needles & yarn. A design did manage to appear but I’m sure one can imagine what the yarn looked like after repeated tinking. Halfway thru the project, I found a job. Yay! Soooo….the sweater WIP was put aside, then disappeared to never be seen again. Later on, I picked up knitting again, this time making the smarter choice of choosing patterns made in Stockinette stitch, flat with solid colors. In the 60 yrs since my first sweater, I found the love of knitting in making many blankets, hats and sweaters of many colors. Oh yes, and with circular needles!!
The first thing I knit was dishcloths.
I started as a crocheter, and made an afghan for each year I was in college – the only way I could concentrate was by having my hands do something. When I started knitting, I jumped on with a baby sweater because I knew it would teach me everything I needed to know about knitting.
Thank you so much for this giveaway – it’s all gorgeous!!
My first knit was a shrug, small but wearable. 🙂
The first thing I ever knit was a scarf with my grandmother’s help, although it turned out rather lumpy. It was on plastic size 8 knitting needles with acrylic white yarn that had flecks of other colors. I still have it somewhere despite that being 20 years ago!
The first thing I ever made was probably a garter stitch scarf!
The first thing I ever knitted was clothes for my Barbie doll. I was 10 at the time. My Aunt Winnie taught me to knit that summer I began making doll clothes.
The first thing I crocheted was just a few miles of chain stitch and I do mean miles. The first thing I knit was a doll blanket. I was 7 or 8 years old and I’m now 65.
taught myself to crochet in middle school and made a poncho–so many years ago and I still love playing with yarn
I am new to crochet but my mom taught me to knit many many years ago and my first project was a scarf. I still have that scarf.
I think the first thing I ever knitted was a chihuahua sweater!
The first thing I ever crocheted was a little pumpkin! Then I made probably 100 more lol! First knitted item was a hat less than a year after learning crochet!
Both of my first projects (knit at age 7 and crochet at age 30) were scarves!
I think my first project was a scarf when I learned to knit and a granny square when I learned to crochet. I taught myself how to knit cables from a book and then I taught my mother how to make them. I dove right into knitting a sweater and never looked back, lol. I made many Aran knitted sweaters for myself and my husband.
I learned to crochet in 3rd or 4th grade from my teacher – it was just a lot of single-chain “bracelets” or “keychains”. I stopped for a while, and when I picked it back up again, I think I tried my hand at a blanket, but the first thing I actually completed was a beanie!
My grandmother taught me to knit. She started me off with a dishcloth.
This first thing I ever knitted were slippers. I think I knit slippers for everyone in the family. I was about 8 years old at the time.
I learned on dishcloths, taught by my stepmom!
I am self taught at around sixth grade. I had too much energy to have and not do something with it. I bought three skeins of red heart yarn and a pamphlet which had simple sketches on how to do each needed stitch. I managed to get the Afghan done and gave it to my father. Then I learned other things in what was called home EC. My sister’s did not have any interests in fabric arts until mid-life and the kids left home. I still am the only one to crochet. I need to relearn knitting been far too long since the last project. Crochet has helped focus and calm down during tough times. Now I am retired I want to spend most of my time doing fiber related projects as they give me a lot of joy.
The first thing I knit was a cardigan – jewel neck, set-in sleeves; white wool worsted. I was 7 years old. Mom took my sisters and me downtown to the fancy department store, where Mrs. Sadler sold us the yarn, measured us, wrote the patterns out for each of us, and taught us to knit. The ribbing at the beginning of the back of that sweater was a project in itself. So much fun! It took me a year to make that sweater – and it fit!
My first knit was a dishcloth! And I still like to do them randomly to try out different techniques.
My first knit project was a scarf that my Mum taught me how to make via Skype while I was traveling for work. My first crochet project was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle beanie hat for my nephew for his birthday when he was 4.
I do not remember my very first knit which was around 60 years ago. It might have been a sweater for me because sweaters are the only things I remember knitting as a teenager.
The first thing I ever crocheted was a sweater – no pattern, just following along from a friend. And that was 42 years ago! Never looked back 🙂
My grandmother taught me how to knit, and she started me with a garter-stitch scarf.
What a celebration of colour! My first project was a crochet toque (beanie). I made one each for the whole family with different colours, yarns and stitch patterns. It was a fantastic motivation and I learned so much. 15 years later, and I’m still learning. Now I prefer knitting sweater and socks or weaving rugs and blankets. Fibre arts have lead me on a long and wonderful journey ❤️
I’m too old to remember THE FIRST thing—and neither craft stuck with me—but when I started crocheting again in my mid-40s, I made a log cabin blanket. Then in my late 50s, I saw the knitted Lampy in one of Chandi’s Free Friday emails, watched the video and decided I could 100% knit, so that’s the project I consider to be the start of my knitting journey, even though I knitted a couple of smaller pieces with bigger yarn.
The ladies where I worked as a teenager taught me to knit a pair of slippers.
Crochet – an afghan from a Mary Maxim kit. Believe it was all single crochet so the stitch was easy to learn.
First thing I ever finished knitting was a shawl. First thing I ever crocheted was a tie back halter top.
I am a self taught knitter. I began knitter when I was in 3rd grade after finding a book in my school library. My first project was a little flap folded purse. 👜
I don’t remember what the first thing I crocheted was because my gramma taught me when I was 7 or 8. When I retaught myself years later I started with headbands and scarfs. Chandi’s youtube tutorials was how I learned to knit and relearned how to crochet. It’s been one of my favorite ways to relax ever since ☺️
I learned to crochet in an art class in high school. I crocheted a blanket and used it for many years. Somehow I think it got lost in a move which is very sad to me. It was made from Dazzle Aire yarn and in the 70’s it was one of the softest yarns that was affordable to a high school kid.
My beloved Nana taught me to crochet when I was around 8 I think, and the first thing I ever did was the most misshapen potholder I ever did see. Worse yet, I made it out of acrylic yarn, which I know now melts under hot temperatures. Rookie mistakes.
A wonky scarf! Was learning with some colleagues at work, and we all made red wonky scarves!
It’s weird to think about this, but the first thing I ever crocheted was actually an amigurumi monkey for my monkey loving daughter. I was convinced it was too difficult to learn to crochet wearable items or blankets, so I taught myself how to do amigurumi. That monkey has become a treasured keepsake for her and I am hoping to one day make another amigurumi, but I have moved on to wearables and blankets and left the amigurumi for my oldest who truly excels at it. lol.
The first thing I knit was a short sleeved v neck wavy hemmed cotton sweater in a beginner class of adults at a local store. The waves I knit are uneven and the sweater is now back in style !
As a kid I crocheted uneven circles as my grandma taught me stitches. As an adult have crocheted (more even) dishcloths, rectangles and circles and last year submitted an afghan–“pinwheel ” pattern to the state fair.
Great colors on the give-away!
My aunt taught me to knit as a child and my first project was red scarf. When I started knitting again during the pandemic, I chose to make a Hogwarts’ Gryffindor scarf. Such a fitting full circle.
I honestly don’t recall the first thing that I crocheted. I’ve been doing it since grade school or maybe early middle school. It was probably a scarf, LOL! Everyone seems to start with scarves. I learned to knit later, and I think that the first thing that I knitted was a stripped hooded sweater.
The first thing I ever crocheted was an amigurumi whale! Got me hooked and I never looked back.
The first thing I learned to crochet was a shawl, I was a teenager and it was part of a class in school it was a little wonky, but still worked as a shawl.
First thing I knit was a scarf
First thing I crocheted (badly) was a blanket.
The first thing I ever knitted was a pillow made of pink and white garter stitch squares as a Christmas gift for the great aunt who taught me to knit. I was about 8 years old and remember how badly it was seamed and stuffed. The seams were alternately too tight and too gappy and for stuffing I used old nylons. When a pair of pantyhose or tights would get a run my mother would save them to use the foot that didn’t have a run in it as a lint trap on the hose that ran out of he washing machine into the utility sink. What made these particularly bad stuffing was that she would them into a into a knot to identify the runny ones and it never occurred to me to untie them and cut them into smaller pieces before stuffing the pillow. That pillow (with improved stuffing) was still sitting on her favorite chair when she died a dozen years later. Thanks for asking this question I hadn’t thought of that pillow in years.
The first thing I crocheted was a pot holder. I was about 6 or 7. It was just a chain of so long, then single crochet down one side, turn and single crochet down the other, then continue in the round until it is as long and it is wide, then slip stitch the front and back together across the top.
The first thing I knit was a baby romper. I was about 24. I saw the pattern for the romper in a magazine and loved it, so I taught myself to knit.
The first thing I remember crocheting was a curly worm book mark. Then I did a crocheted pillow cover for my 1st grade teacher’s Christmas gift.
I crocheted a necktie for my dad. It was basically just a long string of chains, but he left the house for work and would be wearing it. Of course as soon as he got to work he would put on a real necktie over it, but he kept it on under the real tie! I was thrilled! hahaha!
The first thing I crocheted? I tried to make a square just to see if I could do it. Turns out I did not know what I was doing. Found your videos and followed your how to videos and that was my first success.
Then I did the same with knitting. So the things you use to show how to learn to crochet and knit are the first things I made.
I was and still am very ambitious when it comes to my crafting and my very first crochet project was just that, ambitious! It was the summer right before I went into 9th grade and I was determined to make a blanket for my friend for Christmas. It was a blanket with all double crochets, no border because I didn’t know better. 😂 It ended up a little trapezoid looking and I had no clue about blocking but my friend still loved it.
The first thing I ever crocheted was an ambitious 7-pointed star blanket. It was the project that inspired me to learn the craft.
When I decided to try knitting almost 10 years later, I started with a simple infinity scarf.
I still have and love both pieces today.
My great grandmother taught me to crochet, but often my lessons were months apart. My first project was a chain the entire length of a green variegated skein of yarn from K-Mart!
The first thing I remember making (when I learned how to knit 55 years ago) was a garter stitch scarf that my mom frogged several times to help me learn how to NOT drop stitches and keep a steady gauge. I have been an “addict” since. I’ve learned many other crafts, but knitting has always been (and will always be) my go-to. 🙂
The first thing I ever knitted was a never completed scarf lololol completed? I did a ruffle scarf when I picked knitting up again as an adult. For crochet, it was the worst granny square you will ever behold hahaha
I first knit a scarf, and it was a while after that before I did anything other than rectangles of varying sizes 😂
My first knitted project was a pair of mittens, as part of a Girl Scouts project.
Hello!
I think the first crochet thing I finished was a dishcloth. From there loads of hats.
Knitting – still workonft on my first project of a sweater scarf.
The first thing I ever crocheted besides my learning square was a double crochet baby blanket for my sister! The edge was a very interesting shape! 😄
My sister and I learned to knit when I was eight and she was twelve. We made a blanket for our mom for Christmas. She had to sew it together lol. I love your yarn and patterns
The first thing I ever crocheted was a scarf, which I still have. It was designed by my grandmother, who taught me to crochet, filet pattern. It’s kind of a brick layer pattern with solids and open works at each end for about 6″. Between the solid work is about 36″ of open work, but at each end, on top of the brick walls, is the letter “S”. I might have been 7 or 8 years old, so this was made a LONG TIME AGO.
I learned to knit from my aunt, she was left handed, so I sat across from her and mirrored her knitting. My first knit was a doll blanket. My mother taught me to crochet and I would crochet granny squares to make blankets.
I’ve been knitting so long I don’t remember, but I spent alot of time just practicing. Casting on and knitting, purling, learning new techniques.
The first item I started was an afghan but the first item I finished was a baby sweater and a scarf from the most wonderful chenille yarn ever made (Muench Touch Me Chenille). That yarn was so nice if anyone ever made it again I’d stock up!
My very first crocheted project was a Granny Square afghan for my college dorm room. My mom made one in coordinating colors for my roommate. That may have been the last thing she made, but I still have to have yarn running through my fingers all these years later. Whether knitting or crocheting, I am always working on something all these years later
At age 50 I noticed a cute skein of gradient yarn, carried it around AC Moore, and then shrugged and bought crochet hooks because there was a crochet pattern on the ball band. A hat! I swore through the whole hat, but learned enough to make a second hat, and was “hooked”. Then knitting a few years later, lace, socks, brioche, and nothing is off limits. Best hobbies ever, after…buying more yarn.
The first thing I ever crocheted….a crooked scarf!
I started crocheting when I was about 8-9 years old. I believe the first thing I made was a square, but my first project was a hat.
Knitting was a bit harder for me so I can’t remember when I first started learning. I do remember my first projects being a hat and a scarf.
The first thing I knitted was a scarf. The first crochet project I recall was a cape. It’s been so long ago (50+ years) I don’t remember what the very first thing was.
The first complete thing I ever knitted was a cotton shell top for my Mom.
The first thing I ever knitted was a potato chip scarf with yarn from my LYS. I never wore it.
First thing I learned to crochet was a granny square. My tension was so loose they turned out quite big so my mother joined them and lined them and made a bag out of them for me. I tried to learn how to knit as a child but kept dropping stitches. Mum got frustrated and refused to help me anymore so I gave up but years later I decided to try again on my own and have knitted many things since.
The first thing I can remember knitting was a dolman sleeved intarsia sweater in mohair. I have no idea why the person who taught me to knit let that be my first project. 🙂
My Mum tried to teach me how to knit when I was younger and almost gave up because my work was either too tight, too loose or very holey!
I found a pattern and yarn for a sweater one day in a local shop and decided that’s what I wanted to knit. My Mum told me I was on my own with that one and fully expected me to fail, but I proved her wrong. I guess I just needed the right motivation 🥰
First knitted a scarf, which never was completed because my Grade 6 teacher took it away because I was knitting during class! First crochet was a granny square which I hated so abandoned crochet until I had a daughter that wanted a set of dolls. Had to learn Amigurumi in a hurry! Turning 68 this month and retirement stash building is underway!
Happy birthday to Chandi too!
The first thing I crocheted was a doll hat, I think. I was in high school and mom got me interested in crochet with doll dresses. Remembering the shapeless hat I made, I am lucky I didn’t begin with a dress straightaway!
I’m 84 years old and have be crocheting since I was about 8 years old and knitting since I taught about 46 years ago. I have ordered many of your patterns. I think your yarns are gorgeous and would love to win this give away!
i love everything you and your team make. so many creative ideas. im also learning how to weave. some day i will use your beautiful yarn to weave a shawl or wrrap. thanks for everything you do. i also enjoy reading all the comments on your emails. always so positive. thanks
The first major thing I knitted was a sweater (while I was pregnant} for my son. He’s 57 now!
The first thing I ever crocheted was a scarf. My first knit project was a hat.
The first thing I knit was a scarf, and the first crochet was a shawl. I like having 2 projects going. 1 knitting and 1 crochet!
That takes me back to the early seventies. I taught myself crochet from a booklet he the illustration were line drawings that only showed the hook and the yarn. No hands! I learned some stitches and pronounced it was a scarf. Then my mom yelled wait and dashed up the stairs. A minute later she dashed down the stairs, nearly headfirst. She dropped a huge box on my lap and I opened it to find a pattern and a couple dozen or so skeins of white yarn. The pattern was for a woman’s knee-length cape! That took me months, with mom checking my progress daily and pointing out errors that had to be corrected then and there. That just about broke me. I got it done and she was so proud, strutting around in it! It was the better part of a year before I held a hook again. She passed away three years and two days ago. When we started clearing out her closet there was the cape. The darn thing came back to me after 50 years!
The first thing I ever knit was a sweater for my brother.
I was taught to crochet by my mother when I was 10. My first project was pot holders!
The first thing I learned for both knitting and crochet was a scarf 🙂 my first crochet scarf was charcoal grey and my first knitted scarf was dark green.
I started to learn quite young when my Mum brought home a little instruction booklet which included how to crochet left handed, so now that’s how I do it as I am the third in my maternal line to be left handed. I am the first to be allowed to stay that way though after my Mum told the teachers to leave me alone. The first thing I crocheted was a scarf in Australian Double Crochet. I’m still to this day the only person I know who does left handed crochet.
My first crochet project….a crazy looking scarf!
Can’t remember. The first item in my Ravelry list is a crocheted triangular shawl. Think I’ve started a knit scarf many times and never finished one. I think the first one I finished was a simple hat.
The first thing I ever crocheted was a doily. I won a ribbon for it in the county fair.
Self Taught, I started with cotton and a small motif — a lot of practice later, I had over 200 motifs. I learned out to whip stitch them together and made an heirloom baby blanket
for my boss. My list of projects is only growing, I’d love to receive this yarn for my birthday – Yup, I’m an October baby – you know scales of justice an all.
Take Care Chandi!
I taught myself how to crochet using YouTube because my youngest son requested a hat that was just like Finn’s from Adventure Time. He loved it so much, he wore it every day for the longest time.
I learned to knit when I was 10 years old. I made small scarves and blankets for my Barbie. The true test of my talent came when I was in the US Air Force 13 years later while stationed in South Dakota. When we were snowed in at my dorm and had to wait for the other soldiers to dig out my front door. I made 2 pullover sweaters (male and female) and my love of knitting took off. Now I knit sweaters, shawls, socks, hats, and I learned to crochet 4 years ago, and drop spindling 8 years ago has become spinning on an Ashford Kiwi 3 this year. (I am now 65 years old, retired, and running an Etsy shop).
The very first thing I crocheted was, if I remember well, a small rug for my bedside. A couple of months later, I was already making a rug so large that my father made it double as a bedspread!
The first thing I knit was a garter stitch blanket for my terrier dog when I was 13. I learned to crochet several years later, but I don’t recall the first item I made.
Doll clothes for little baby dolls when I was home sick from school when I was about 9.
The first thing I ever crocheted to completion was a dish scrubby made from strips of nylon netting. Thanks for all of the inspiration and encouragement.
CMT
The first thing I ever knitted was a shawl for my grandmother when I was in high school as part of my home ec class. That was about 55 years ago!
I knitted a potholder when I was about 9 or 10, for a Brownie badge.
The first thing I ever knitted was a small white weasel plush toy, my cats still play with it. My first knitted garment was actually the terebinthia shawl from your website.
The first thing I ever knitted was a sampler of different knit stitch patterns. This was practice since I struggled with tension.
I remember it was 50 years ago, and I was 4. It was a brown scarf. My father had just taught me to knit (garter stitch only) and I wanted to make him a scarf for work. It was an ugly thing but I felt on top of the world as he wore ìt every day during winter.
I crocheted a hat as my first project!
The first thing I ever crocheted was an all-single-crochet square for a sampler afghan. Next was a double crochet square, and so on. I still have those squares, but they never got assembled into an afghan because they all came out different sizes!
First thing I ever knitted was a baby sweater. Then did 2 Barbie sized bathing suits for my nieces for Christmas.
The first thing I crocheted was a scarf. It turned out wonky, but it made me so happy!
It feels like I have been knitting/crocheting from before I can remember. I don’t remember who taught me; it was either my Grandmother or my Mother. Probably both! I think the first thing I knit was a scarf and I’m pretty sure the first thing I crocheted was a blanket. I have become more of a crocheter than a knitter, but they both have helped me through some very difficult times in my life and I am forever grateful to my foremothers for having the patience to teach a little girl such a useful and healing skill.
I think the first project I ever crocheted was a baby blanket, then a little dress for a friend’s baby. I stopped when life got busy, and 30 years later discovered a long forgotten project in a corner of a closet while packing the house to move after retiring. I decided I had time to pick it up again and now it’s a constant part of my life, helped along by wonderful friends in local fiber arts groups. I’m having shoulder surgery in a week and am really bummed that I will have to stop again for a month until it heals!
I was 7 and my Grandma taught me to knit a “swatch” that I proudly called a “dishcloth.” 🙂
The special part of my remembrance is that my grandma had a stroke before I was born which left her left side partially paralyzed. She could only use her right hand – which led to a lot of giggles as I fumbled through many misinterpretations of her directions. The sweetest of memories from a gentle, patient teacher!
It was a long time ago, but the first thing I made was likely a crocheted scarf.
I haven’t a clue! I was taught crochet when I was pretty young, and I don’t remember what I did first. Knitting came later.
The first thing i crocheted was a ripple stitch blanket.
The first thing I ever knit was a stocking hat in variegated rainbow yarn. I was 9 years old. It was Christmas. My godmother Frances taught me to knit during that vacation.
My first knitting project was in school as part of the needlecraft class. It was a gnome and my mum had to help me fill it and see it together. That was 56 years ago.
I was 7 years old and made a knit vest and skirt for a Barbie doll. It was rather ugly and crude (thinking back about it), but I was full of pride for making it with no help and no pattern!
I started knitting under my grandma’s instructions. She was an avid knitter. After learning the basic knit and purl stitches, I made my first pullover for my grandfather. He was a big man, but I finished it after a few struggles and felt proud of myself. I was nine years old then.
My mother taught me how to knit and the first thing I knitted was meant to be a cardigan with panels of bramble-berry stitch ( basically lots of bobbles in a pattern). By the time I
had finished the fronts and the back I had run out of yarn so it ended up as a sleeveless vest. It was very warm. I have never knitted bobbles again!!! Still fun memories of me and
my Mum.
The first thing I knitted Was a sampler blanket and the first thing I crocheted was a poncho. i would love to win these yarns and would have so much fun making so many wonderful items. Thank you for offering such scrumptious yarns.
It was a baby blanket, and it was shaped like a trapezoid 😆
I’ve knit forever but been a snob about crochet… but now I’m learning in order to make some coasters for my place! It’s been very difficult to find interesting patterns that ALSO have left handed videos. However I’m getting there!
The first thing I crocheted was an afghan, taught by my grandma. I was taught to knit a washcloth by my aunt.
I crocheted first, and I made a filet teddy bear square 🙂 And then a million pot holders
My mother tried to get me to crochet some doilies…the kind where the edges are totally ruffled around a small circle that would fit a vase…for flowers? I got maybe up to the second or third round of ruffles and I think we both knew that I wasn’t ready for that. About 8-10 years later I found a sweater pattern in a magazine and asked if she could teach me to knit. I got the front and back of the sweater knitted but the sleeves I knit one at a time. By the time the second sleeve was done my tension had changed so much they were not the same size. So I made a vest out of the cardigan. It was probably another 6-8 years before I tackled anything again but knitted a serape that I loved and wore to death.
I knitted a scarf for one of my stuffed animals. It was NOT pretty but I was proud of it!
First thing I knit was a doll blanket and the first crochet item was some granny squares I think I was about 10 years old!
I don’t remember the first thing I knitted… I was a child…. it must have been something simple.
The first thing I “remember” knitting is a scarf. I was in my teens and made several design errors. About 40 years later, I still have it, it is still a WIP and I have no intention of finishing it!
The first thing I ever knit to completion was a black and white garter stitch shawl for my grandma. The first thing I crocheted was a 63 square blanket because each square was a different stitch. It’s still on my couch 15+ years later, so I must have done something good!
My first project was a scarf for my father. By the time I finally finished knitting it, he had bought a different ski jacket and it didn’t match as well, but he faithfully wore that scarf anyways.
My first crochet project was a granny square pillow cover taught to me over 4 decades ago by my grandma. I haven’t crocheted in all those years but picked up a crochet hook during the 2025 mystery crochet-a-long and am still going strong. My first knit project was a scarf and have since done socks, hats, shawls, blankets, and even completed my first knit sweater this year.
I bought a “learn to crochet” kit at a craft store and taught myself to crochet when I was 11 or 12 years old. I made a striped single crochet scarf alternating baby blue and yellow yarn!
The first thing I ever crocheted was a potholder, my grandmother was a very patient teacher to 12yr old me.
I’ve been knitting so long that I honestly can’t remember! I jumped into the deep end with crochet and made a blanket as a gift, which is not a strategy I would recommend.
The first thing I ever crocheted was a draft snake in 1980 or so.
My very first project was a red wool scarf that turned out too short for anyone! But that was just what I learned with. My first intentional project was a beginner garter stitch blanket that I still have not finished!
The first thing I had ever crocheted was back in the late 70’s quite possibly the early 80’s. My sister had been taught at girl scouts camp how to crochet, and in turn taught me. The first project was a red and white pillow case. I’ll never forget the feel of that pillow case. I loved the feel of the yarn. I dont know how long I used that pillow case. I remember learning how to crochet more than the single crochet stitch by library books and magazines that our mother would get once in a while. It was so exciting to see the works and projects then, and the magic is still there after 50 years!
The first things I’d crocheted were granny squares and a shawl. My first knitted item was a washcloth.
The first thing that I knitted was actually the Expression Fiber Arts Dashael Shawl. I dowloaded it from a Free pattern Friday, and one day decided that I wanted to be able to knit like my mom. I started it March of 2025 and finished it August 2026.
I just started crocheting this year. A little late in my 54 year life. I am hooked for sure. The first thin I made was a kitchen rag. Since then I’ve been ALL OVER IT!!! I just recently finished my first 1970’s shawl. Thank you for your kind words and messages in my in box.
Dishcloth! Crocheted those over and over
The first thing I made (in knit and also crochet) were scarves!
First thing I crocheted? Barbie hats. Lots of them. I didn’t understand why my circles kept turning into cups, but I knew what to use them for! Knitting…I think I just did a swatch that my mom promised to turn into a coat hanger cover. I don’t think she ever did.
My first (completed) crochet was when I was about 18. I made a maxi dress and wore it to a work event. I didn’t know anything about blocking back then. But the end of the night the dress had grown about a foot and I was tripping over it. 😂
I wanted to learn how to crochet at an early age. I finally learned when I was 44 years young. The first thing I made was a wash cloth. Then I took off. I love to crochet amigurumis. The very first amigurumi I made was a dog, I still have it.
The first thing I ever knit was a scarf for one of my stuffed animals I was about 8 yrs old.
I learned crochet first and I’m not one to shy away from challenges, so I made a gingham granny square blanket for my mom. It was close to queen-sized, had 168 squares, and had this big ruffle for a border. Mom still has it!
Fiber and yarn are my lifeline. It’s creating and sharing beauty in crafts that keep me sane. Also being over 60 more and more aware that sharing what I know with others is the name of the game so the crafts stay alive in generations to come. Just like when my grandma taught me when I was 6. It’s a never ending cozy cushy little rabbit hole and I keep jumping in.
I learned to crochet during Covid. I taught my daughter and niece too. First thing we ever crocheted was a headband. There was no stopping after that. While I love crocheting shawls, my daughter is a whiz at amigurumi.
I was 6 years old when I learned to knit at school. I made a rather large light purple “bookmark”. I gifted it to my father!
The first thing I ever knitted was when I was in Primary School, around 8 years and we knitted small snowmen decorations for Christmas. I think I may still have it! The first crochet item I ever made was a coaster when I was about 15 after my grandma taught me.
The first thing I ever started knitting was a scarf (classic) in gold-colored thread, but the first thing I ever finished was a pair of fingerless gloves that I still wear. You can really see how my tension got way better in the second glove than in the first haha
The first thing I ever crocheted was a shawl (talk about ambitious projects), but it turned out pretty alright (just a little too bulky and I don’t like the colour anymore)
my first thing was a hat for my husband I crocheted
The first (successful) project I crocheted was a washcloth. Before that, I tried projects that were way too complicated for a beginner, so I got a book (as librarians do) and started over. I had to teach myself so I had no idea where to begin. I tried and gave up too many times to count over 20ish years, but it stuck this time. I’m so grateful it did, because I’ve been able to teach others the craft and make so many beautiful gifts!
The first thing I ever crocheted was a very long chain strand lol then I learnered how to turn and made a blanket.
I crocheted an uneven scarf😊 it was the first crochet I had ever done (I was somewhere from 8-10 years of age) but I was happy with it and I still have it in my closet:)
The first thing I crocheted was a single crochet top
I started straight with the top and no gauge swatch🙈
When I was 8, my first crochet project was a cluster stitch rug. I still have it!
First item I knitted was a pair of baby mittens from a 1950’s pattern. My mum made the cardigan, booties and hat. I must have been about 10. Both my brother and I came home from hospital in outfits made from the same pattern, and I’ve knitted the full set for friends at least 5 times since.
Oh my, that was a long time ago but I think the first thing I ever crocheted was a scarf.
I am currently a knitter, but as a child of about 9-10, my grandma taught me some basic crocheting. After some basic chains, I remember crocheting around in a circle with some cotton string and making a doll hat/bonnet.
I don’t really remember, but I think it was some knitted clothes for my Barbie doll, like a skirt or a scarf.
I was “thought” how to crochet in primary school and we had to make a simple doll with single crochet.
I really don’t remember what the 1st thing was probably a dollie that was 60 some odd years ago
The first thing I knitted (if we do not count the samples I knit fore learning) was a scarf. A long, long scarf that I knitted when I was 14 and I still have it (and wear it), nearly 40 years after.
I made my eldest brother a scarf. By the time I was done he had a different coat with a different color LOL But he wore my crooked scarf because he was touched that I even attempted to make something for him.. How sweet is that? I was 19
I have to guess and say a crocheted granny square. I learned from my paternal grandmother “Nannie” and also from my maternal grandmother “Jessie”. Nannie made lots of ripple afghans in all sorts of color combinations. Jessie taught me how to crochet with tiny hooks & cotton thread to make snowflake ornaments and Barbie doll clothes.
The first thing I knitted was a scarf (self-taught with videos.) The first thing I crocheted was a dishcloth- taught by a co-worker.
I learned to knit first while in elementary school, but I never finished my first project (it was to be a scarf). I later learned to crochet and completed an afghan my first year in college. I do more knitting than crochet at this time.
The first thing I ever crocheted was an amigurumi! I don’t even remember what animal it was. My mom also tried to teach me to knot but I just didn’t pick it up like I did crochet and am still struggling to learn it years later!
It was such a long time ago now, but I believe it was a small blanket for my baby boy. It was a rectangle with colors of his nursery…
I remember learning to crochet with my grandmother. The first piece she ever taught me to make was a little blanket for my Barbie dolls. I used it until it unraveled. Since then I have made shawls, blankets and many more. I taught my daughter to crochet as well. She will carry on the family traditions.
A scarf and the width varied horribly as I went along.
The first thing I ever crocheted was a hat. I learned from the Girl Scouts.
My first knitting project was a pair of slippers we made in home ec class.
My 6th grade teacher taught all the girls to knit. She helped me make a pair of slippers for my Mother for Christmas. She kept them for years.
I crocheted a veeerrrrrry long chain for a necklace or headband I think.
In high school I knit my first sweater – out of Aunt Lydia’s rug yarn – it kind of looked like chain mail. I don’t remember but kind of suspect that my reasoning was that it was cheap and fast.
The first thing I crocheted was a very wonky scarf
Scarves for both! Quite wonky, with a few dropped stitches and uneven rows so I can’t honestly say they ever got worn, but then I was quite young when I knitted the scarf! I do remember a wonderful sense of achievement though and a whole new world opening up to me 🙂
My very first project was a blanket for my daughter. when she was in jr high…that ended up a deformed triangle lol, but she is 30 now, and still loves it!!
Like most people, my first project was a simple garter stitch scarf that I immediately gave away to a friend.
I think the first thing I ever knit was probably a hat, but it’s been so many years now I can scarcely remember!
A bulky wool beanie!
The first thing I ever crocheted was a headband with a flower on it in maybe 2018. It was too small and I never wore it, but I really got into crocheting later in 2025.
I learned to knit from my mom when I was a teen. my first thing I made was a small top when I was expecting my 4th child. then I have a long break before started to knit/crochet again and then my first items were socks. a lot of them! so now it’s my every day “ritual” since 2014. 🙂
I first learned to crochet in third grade—my teacher taught our class the basics and led a crochet club that met during morning recess. But all I could do was blocks of single crochet so I think all I made was a very small sad scarf 😂 I picked it up again a couple of years ago when I tore my ACL, and the first thing I made was an amigurumi bear! Now I crochet mostly garments, I love wearing the tops and sweaters that I’ve made 🙂
Knitted Baby Booties!
Oh my! Your yarns are sooo beautiful. I would love to make some lovely items for my friends and family.
Hi! The first thing I ever crocheted was a small doilie – still one of my fav things to make! So blessed that my friend taught me how to crochet!
The first thing I ever crocheted was a hand bag for my grandmother.
Barbie clothes when I was a kid
i learnt to crochet because I saw this pattern for a top in the Woman and Home magazine. So I asked my Mother to teach me the basics and I made it.And wore it so proudly.
I learned to knit when I was in Brownies. I must have been about 8 (long, long time ago) and it was probably a scarf. My mother taught me to crochet shortly after that. She never learned to knit, so I was on my own after that. Made my first sweater when I was a senior in high school. Now fascinated by lace and Japanese knitting, doing mostly shawls, but usually have at least 2 or 3 projects going. One time consuming but worthwhile, the others a bit simpler for when I don’t want to concentrate quite as much.
I learned to crochet in a short-term crafts class in college (Creative Home Furnishings – also learned to tat lace and cross stitch). I made an afghan out of C2C squares.
I learned to knit in school at about age 10 and didn’t enjoy it much – a teacher went off sick (probably stress …), and we all had to knit a blanket square for her, in cotton yarn. I think my mum knitted most of that square.
A .couple of years later, when I was 13, I knitted myself a sweater in a green wool-acrylic blend with silver glitter.
My grandma taught me to knit when I was 6 so that was 77 years ago. I don’t remember what I knit but it would probably be called a swatch today. I still knit almost everyday.
The first thing I ever knit was a short sleeve cotton/linen sweater and it came out fine – I still have it! I knit this the same summer that I learned to knit at my summer job the summer before my senior year in college.
PS – Love the gorgeous colors in the giveaway!! So many things I can imagine knitting! Just WOW!!
The first thing I crocheted was a granny square with my Grandmother.
the first thing I ever crocheted was a granny square blanket when I was in high school. This first thing I ever knitted was a dishrag a couple of years ago. Love your yarn and your patterns!
I was taught how to make knit a Tank top. So easy with an advisor watching
I honestly do not remember the first thing I knit or crocheted. I was about five when I learned from my mom and grandma. As an adult when I took knitting up again, the first thing I made was a pair of socks with an all-over lace pattern. They turned out really well, but I used cotton yarn and I quickly learned that I detest cotton yarn for socks. The first thing I ever crocheted using an actual pattern was Embers a few years ago.
The first thing I ever knitted was a really funky scarf that I ended up giving to my postal delivery lady on an unseasonably cold day in California. It was not symmetrical and the tension was all over the place, but it did what it was made for and helped my mail person stay warm!
I first knit a garter stitch scarf, from a kit. Got me sucked in for life!
I learned how to crochet when I was 10 years old. My first project ever was a granny square! And boy, did I make granny squares!!! Eventually I learned to take all those squares and stitch them together so all my pets and dolls received blankets! Once I got tired of squares I moved on to making tubes. Tubes that converted to evening wear for all of my Barbie dolls.
I now am able to create full blankets, afghans, scarfs and shawls. My next challenge will be to venture out to make my own tops. All that giveaway yarn would make some gorgeous tops and maybe a dress or 2 ?!
I was quite young when I first leaned to crochet. I made a bunch of long single crochet strings and put them together to make a Rapunzel wig, lol.
I taught myself to knit using the Learn to Knit booklet. First project was a baby blanket.
First thing I’ve ever crocheted was a teeny heart and first thing I’ve ever knitted was a fuffy snood (yeah dumb choice on the yarn for a first project).
The first thing I ever knitted was a scarf and the first thing I ever crocheted was a rug which was a huge granny square of fall colors. A sweater for my boyfriend and another for me followed soon after.
I first learned how to make double crochet scarves! Then I taught myself to knit and made a red white and blue super wonky scarf with all the beads to be fancy 🤣🤣
The first thing I learned to crochet was an small bunny in the basement of a church by the sweetest lady who then taught anyone interested in more. I learned knitting way later in life when I wanted another challenge and made a wash cloth as my fist project.
The first thing I ever crocheted was a rug/mat. It was slightly oblong because I always lost a stitch on one side and added one to the other side! The dogs didn’t mind it being under their water bowl though!
The first thing I ever knitted was a pair of socks, just last year. The first thing I ever crocheted was a long time ago, and I think it was a baby blanket.
My uncle taught me to crochet when I was in my early teens, we made a granny square! I taught myself how to knit shortly after, with the help of Youtube and some really long thick nails I found in my Dad’s shop. I made a scarf that I still wear!
Hi! First thing I ever knitted was a dog scarf from a kit
Does Tunisian crochet count? If so, a pair of fingerless mitts.
The first thing I crocheted intentionally (as in, not stitch practice that became a dishcloth, haha!) was a scarf. First completed knit was a beanie.
I made a scarf out of the most hideous variegated yarn.
The first thing I’ve knit was the garter scarf from an expression fiber arts beginner’s kit! I still wear it, it’s so squishy!
I first crocheted pot holders, taught by my Granny. So many potholders!
My first crochet project was a granny square blanket and my first knit project was a scarf in stockinette.
The first thing I knitted was a scarf; my first crochet item was a square to practice single, half-double, and double crochets. I think my first completed crochet item was either a dishcloth or a scarf – I don’t remember which was first.
Hi EFA, I learned to knit and crochet when I was a little girl and I made slippers. Lot’s of slippers especially during Christmas.
My mom taught me to knit when I was home sick at age 6 or 7. It was a small striped scarf for a doll. I still have it. The first thing I crocheted was a shawl, probably about 6 years later. I still have it also!
Thanks for asking!!
The First thing I ever knitted and completed was a C2c dishcloth, and I made them a lot! I’m currently volunteering at my local humanitarian center and I love to crochet granny square blankets!!
The first thing I knitted was a fairly wonky scarf when I was a kid. I don’t think I ever wore it, but I still have it!
Hi, Chandi! The first crochet was a very wonky pillow. I wasn’t great at maintaining my stitch count, so I turned the piece on it’s edges and did sc & dc along the side until it looked more even. My first knit piece was a sample of siple lace after taking the Tin Can Knits free email lace course. Hugs, hon!
First thing I ever crocheted was a very ugly baby blanket lol but my niece loved it!
The first thing I ever knit was a hat for my Niece. I don’t remember the first crochet item I made, but it was probably an oversized blanket!
The first thing I ever knitted was a garter stitch scarf out of Lion Brand Homespun for a gift. The yarn hid any tension wonkiness, but I hated how the ends wouldn’t stay woven in.
My fourth-grade teacher taught the entire class to crochet, and my first project was a red and white Christmas scarf that I made for my sweet mama. Mama was so proud of that scarf. That was 52 years ago, and I still have that scarf.
Long before the Internet and YouTube tutorials, I taught myself how to crochet using the drawings in the list of stitches at the end of the crochet pattern booklets. My first finished crochet project was a doily, one of the patterns in the booklet. There wasn’t much variety back then. Crochet mostly meant either doilies or afghans 😁
I started learning to crochet from my Grandma when I was about 17 years old, after practicing stitches & rows & rows of them my first real project were doilies.
My First knitting project was a pair of slippers in our 4H group. I even wore them.
The first thing I ever crocheted was a doily. It was enormous! I used stiffener and put it over a bowl to make a large victorian hat. They decorated it with silk flowers. I gave it to my husband’s grandmother. She loved it so much that she had it framed! It was a pretty cool first effort, if I do say so myself. Lots of fun!
First completed thing was a bear for my daughter. It is horribly holey and wonky but she still has it some 15 years later and refuses to get rid of it.
The first thing I crocheted was a granny square; knitted was a scarf.
The first thing I ever knitted was a colossal failure. I thought I would choose a size that was the same size as my bust. Didn’t get far on that one. The second thing was a wonderful Cascade pattern for my 10-year-old. I still have the family picture where he wore it and its beautiful. Glad I stuck with the craft!
The first thing(s) I ever crocheted was my childrens baby blankets. I took a long break and now I’m at it full time with all different projects! I adore it!
The first item I knit was arm warmers. The first thing I crochet was a scarf. These were the first projects I did but my very first was swatches so I could practice the stitches lol.
Hi! The first thing I ever knit was a simple small blanket for my most favorite plush toy – it was a sheep 🙂 I was about 6-7 years old 🙂
Hi, Zélia from Portugal. The first thing I knitted was a scarf in school, we had arts and crafts. Then years passed until I got the urge to pick up my needles again and I knitted quite a lot, made pieces for my sisters, friends and family. Later I even started knitting some pieces to earn some money 💰. Crochet 🧶 started quite later in my life, a couple of years ago, and I started with some granny squares, have enjoyed crocheting. I’m really into handcrafts.
You have many beautiful patterns and the yarn 🧶 is gorgeous 😍, but it’s too expensive for me to purchase because I’m so far away, delivery is expensive.
Have a wonderful day.❤️❤️
First thing was the longest chain ever! Ha ha mom taught me when I was very young. Then my next project was a granny square. I can crochet anything now !
I can honestly say that my mom tried to teach me to crochet with what we have dubbed the family pattern (generally used to make blankets). It did not take in the mind on how to create the magic of crochet. Fast forward a couple of years and I split my head open after going heels over handle bars down the side of a mountain and it just clicked. I first made a small square of the family pattern.
I don’t remember actually learning to crochet, not sure who taught me because I don’t remember my mother or grandmother doing it, perhaps in a 4H club. I do know I made some granny squares when I was young. Knitting, I do remember my mother actually bought a knitting machine and I tried it out and knitted my husband a scrap l scarf on it for Christmas. I barely tried doing it by hand, was thinking of trying one of your beginner tutorials for it. You do beautiful work
The first thing I crocheted was a scarf. Simple back and forth. That was my gateway item. Now I do scarves, blankets, tote bags, amigurumi, and snowflakes.
A group at my school made squares to contribute to blankets to donate!
an orange…thing. it was supposed to end up being a blanket but it never got that far.
The first thing I ever crocheted was a hat, following Chandi’s tutorial for learning crochet! My grandmother, who raised me, crocheted, but I didn’t learn more than the chain stitch as a child. When I decided to learn crochet, I found Chandi’s tutorials, and they were my gateway into crochet. When my grandma was diagnosed with terminal cancer, I’d take my crochet project and sit with her every day during my lunch break, and just chat and crochet. I’m so glad I had the ability to do that, and I miss her every day, even though it’s been a decade since she passed. 💜
I think the first thing I ever crocheted was a granny square with a neat cosmic theme using a lionbrand colorchange yarn. I never blocked it but I’m still pretty proud of it for a first project! The first thing I ever knit was a headband you could tie.
The first thing I ever crocheted was a braided cowl scarf. I had never crocheted before, but my best friend was teaching a workshop and wanted me to help. I didn’t even know how to crochet a chain!! She taught me the basics in probably an hour and I was hooked (pun intended!!)! I’m not sure how much help I was but I went home afterwards and taught my three girls to crochet. And we still all do it to this day, about 19 years later!
When I was maybe seven or eight, my grandma taught me how to knit with my first project being a scarf; mom was the one to teach me to crochet I think with my first project being a dishcloth. Fairly sure it came out wonky because my younger self kept forgetting to add the turning chains. In 2022 I picked crochet back up after getting a cowl kit for Christmas, and have kept going with it ever since making hats, sweaters, blankets, etc. (to me crochet makes a lot more sense than knitting at the moment but I’ll probably get to that eventually). Thank you for having this giveaway for your gorgeous yarns!
Hi chandi, my name is shalom and I’m a Nigerian student in the 12th grade or ss3 and i love crocheting soooo much. I love making bags and I’m currently making my birthday dress. Winning 35 skeins would be a dream come true, i will use it to make crotchet bags and wearables for my family and friends. Thanks for this wonderful monthly worldwide giveaway. ❤shalom
My very first yarn project was a crocheted shawl, 50 years ago! I won a blue ribbon at our county fair with it.
The first thing that I crocheted was a scarf. The first thing that I knitted was a scarf. The first more complicated item that I crocheted was a few granny squares. The first more complicated item that I knitted was a cowl.
While I mostly knit now, I started crocheting about 18 years ago… I can’t remember exactly what my first project was but I’m sure it was an amigurumi because that’s why I wanted to start crocheting!
I learned to crochet as a child and am a self taught knitter thanks to YouTube! My first project was a scarf, crochet and knitting.
First thing I ever knitted or crocheted? I am self-taught for crocheting over 45 years ago – no idea at all – a circular afghan is one of the most memorable crocheted comfort pieces. Knitted? A seriously wonky dishcloth … the first “good” knitted piece a really big pair of knitted “house” socks
The first thing I crocheted was a granny square.
I am not sure as I was a child… but I guess a garter stitch scarf 🤔😅
I learned to knit when I was 12, and I knitted a scarf with horribly tight tension. I didn’t realize that I didn’t need to keep pulling the yarn tighter and tighter until it wouldn’t give. It became unworkable and was a skinny scarf. I eventually realized my mistake, but I laugh about it now.
The first thing I ever crocheted was a mesh hat made out of cotton!! I don’t use it at all but at least ik how to make one😀
It’s been so long I don’t really remember the first thing I crocheted. It was probably a scarf!
I learned to knit many years ago – probably the first thing that I made was a dishrag.
The first thing I ever finished crocheting was a beanie hat, and the first thing I attempted to crochet, but didn’t finish, was a scarf!
I learned to crochet when I was in elementary school so I don’t really know what the first thing I made was, but I remember making crochet bookmarks – a spiral on which we glued googly eyes, chain stitch, then a tassel – as a girl scout.
I wanted to learn how to knit because I love wool sweaters, so that’s where I started! I followed a YouTube video by Sheep and Skein to make a top down, stockinette sweater. Unfortunately, I didn’t take the idea of gauge swatching seriously, so I can fit almost 2 of me inside it. But it still has a place of honor in my closet.
I’ve started a bunch of crochet projects, but the first one I ever finished was a tiny pug to accompany the gnome I gave my nephew for Christmas last year. 😀
a crochet doily
The first thing that I knitted was a scarf. I was about ten years old and I saw a pretty yarn. I told my mom that I want to knit something out of it and mom suggested that I knit a scarf. At home mom taught me how to knit and I started to knit. The yarn was a multicolour type and “hairy” so it looked pretty when it was in a ball, but I didn’t like how it looked once it was knitted. So, it turned out quite ugly. Even though I never wore it, I kept it for many years, because I didn’t want to throw away the first thing I had ever knitted. But eventually, I think I got rid of it when I was clearing out other unnecessary items.
The first thing I knitted when I learned at the age of 7 was a badly shaped scarf. 40 years later, I am still knitting them for donations.
I don’t know. I was 5. Probably a very ugly potholder.
At the age of 8 I learned to crochet in scool . My first project was a teddy bear. I hated it. In the following Year I learnd to knit. I needed some years to love knitting. But I never tried again to crochet.
My first thing was an amigurumi. The Woobles got me into it. I did three or four of those. But my first non-kit was a basket.
My first crochet project was a skirt for my sisters doll.
Gorgeous as usual! The first thing I crocheted were granny squares and the first knit project was a scarf!
I think my first thing I knit was a very wonky-looking, scarf when I was around 10 yrs old. I taught myself later on to make a ripple (zig-zag) baby blanket when I mastered the purl stitch and stopped adding extra stitches! Gradually got braver and made an afghan with different stitches and cables. Read a lot of patterns and learned a lot by myself, still learning!!
