Hello, my sweet friend! I have an easy, beginner friendly, knitted shawl to share with you today, and I’d love to tell you more about it!
Mother of Pearl was designed by me, Chandi Agee. This pattern is super special because of the beautiful memories it holds for me. This design is inspired by a shawl I made for my mom when I first learned to knit. Cozy and comfortable and oh-so easy to make, you’re sure to love working on this wrap. Not sure if you have enough yarn? Have no fear! Just stop when you run out or yarn or get bored working on it. Ahhhh… perfection! The pattern also includes instructions to help you customize this design to knit a scarf or blanket, as well as the shawl itself.
This Beginner level pattern is perfect for those who are just beginning or have knit a project or two. Stitches/skills include knit, purl, and basic color changes.
The original version of Mother of Pearl was made with our luxurious Pearlescent Worsted yarn. Pearlescent Worsted is a 50:50 blend of Superwash Merino Wool and Mulberry Silk. Smooth with a gorgeous gleam! When you combine these fibers into a single-ply yarn, you get subtle differences in tone, as the wool and silk take the dye differently. The colors truly appear to be iridescent! 220 yds/201 m per skein.
The original version used five skeins (1023 yds/936 m) of our Pearlescent Worsted yarn and was made with color Mother of Pearl Pearlescent Worsted.
The updated version of Mother of Pearl was made with our yummy Buttery Worsted yarn. Buttery Worsted is a dreamy soft, 2-ply worsted weight yarn that’s boingy, bouncy, comfy, cozy, cushy, and cloud-like! It is unbelievably soft and perfect for snuggly blankets, cuddly accessories, and your favorite sweaters and other garments. Buttery Worsted is made from 100% Superwash Merino Wool and has 224 yds/205 m per skein.
The updated sample shawl shown here was knitted with our Mum Hues Buttery Worsted Kit: A) Gold, B) Yellow-brown, C) Red-brown, D) Sienna, and E) Gray. The updated version used approximately 987 yds/903 m total: Color A: 193 yds/176 m, Color B: 195 yds/178 m, Color C: 201 yds/184 m, Color D: 195 yds/178 m, and Color E: 203 yds/186 m.
We made a video showing how to knit this pattern. Take a look! It’s so easy to make!
The pattern contains written instructions only.

I don’t understand for the châle ( the update version) it’s say use color A for 1 ton69 and then starting at row 11 use…..
I could not find a tutorial for the Firebird pattern concerning knitting the front pattern on the wrong side rows other than the reversed symbols. I guess you have to reverse the symbols on the wrong side rows as you go unless you wish to chart it out.
Thanks, Jackie Hoyle
Hi Jackie,
Thank you for your email. We have a tutorial for this pattern that you can find here: https://youtu.be/StcbjVcsbqQ
This one will show you how to read the chart on the right side and the wrong side rows. I hope this helps. Please let us know if you have further questions.
Have a nice day! – Johanna 💜
