Hello, my little sugar plum! This week, I have a beautiful, knitted, cabled sweater – made in two versions – that is absolutely perfect for chilly, winter days and brisk nights. I hope you’ll keep reading to learn more about this stunning pattern.
Arathorn was designed by Emma Butram. When asked about this design, Emma said, “In J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings saga, Arathorn, which means ‘royal eagle’ or ‘steadfast king,’ was one of the Rangers of the North and a descendent from the line of kings from the realm of Gondor. Though he never lived to see the return of the king, he was promised that his son would bring hope to the world. Arathorn was the father of Aragorn, who united the peoples of Middle Earth to defeat the forces of Mordor, and as the King of Gondor, brought peace back to their realm.”
“The Arathorn sweater was inspired by the intricate braids and cables featured throughout the film adaptations of the Lord of the Rings. The sweater features an adjustable collar, cables that form braided ropes and rings, and long raglan sleeves, and it is knit in a soft wool blend, which makes it stylish and warm enough for a trip in the wilds of Middle Earth – or wherever you may wander. The cables are an adaptation of a stitch from Norah Gaughan’s Knitted Cable Sourcebook. The sweater is seamless and knit from the top down and in the round, so it is easy to customize the length of the sleeves and body, if you desire. I hope you find this sweater to be a lovely addition to your wardrobe. Happy knitting!”
This Advanced level pattern is for the adventurous knitter who loves to tackle something a bit more complicated. Skills/concepts include reading a pattern and charts, working cable stitches with or without a cable needle, working twisted stitches, increases and decreases, working in the round with circular needles or dpns, picking up stitches, and garment shaping techniques.
Arathorn was made with our delightful Luster Worsted yarn. This amazing yarn is soft and strong and wonderful for sweaters, blankets, accessories, and more! Luster Worsted is a blend of 50% Superwash Merino Wool and 50% Lyocell, a plant fiber. The gorgeous sheen from the Lyocell adds to this yarn’s squishalicious appeal! 200 yds/183 m per skein.
The turtleneck version shown here is a size XS, modeled on a 34” (86 cm) bust with 2” (5 cm) of negative ease. The crewneck version shown here is a size S, modeled on a 34” (86 cm) bust with 2” (5 cm) of positive ease.
The samples shown here were knitted with colors Honey Pot Luster Worsted and Margaret Luster Worsted. The pattern is offered in sizes XS – 3XL, and you’ll need six to nine skeins of Luster Worsted, depending on the size you select.
The pattern contains written and charted instructions, and you will need to be able to read a chart to make this sweater.
