Hello, my sweet friend! Today, I want to share with you a scarf and shawl that use a technique called Brioche knitting. Read on to learn more!

Josephine was designed by Jane Vanselous. When asked about her designs, Jane said, “Two-color brioche knitting can create some stunning designs that are next to impossible to create any other way. Using two contrasting colors, the design appears to float above the background. However, unless there is a thorough understanding of the basics, the stitch patterns can be difficult for the knitter to be successful with.”

“This pattern will guide you through the steps of understanding the elements of two-color brioche. Working with slip stitches, yarn overs, and “pairs” of stitches, you will learn how to make the basic brioche stitches. A bit of patience is also required, as you will need to learn to look at your stitches in a slightly different way. The reward is a beautifully thick and cozy scarf or shawl and a whole new way to combine all of those yarns in your stash!”

Josephine is considered an Intermediate level pattern and is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include learning brioche knitting techniques through the use of slip stitches, yarn overs, and working two stitches together.

The Josephine duo uses our Pearlescent Worsted and Enduring Worsted yarns. Our single-ply Pearlescent Worsted is shimmering, heavenly, and wildly popular. It’s a delicious and glowing blend of 50% Superwash Merino Wool and 50% Mulberry Silk. Our Enduring Worsted is a durable blend of 80% Superwash Merino Wool and 20% Nylon. A nice, tight twist results in beautifully defined stitches and projects that will hold up well.

Two skeins of each color are needed for the scarf, and three skeins of each color are needed for the shawl. The scarf sample shown here used 520 yards total: Color A) 261 yards and Color B) 259 yards, and it is shown in colors Abyss Enduring Worsted and River Rock Pearlescent Worsted.

The shawl sample shown used approximately 1152 yards total: Color A) 576 yards and Color B) 576 yards, and it is shown in colors Poised Pansy Pearlescent Worsted and Chilled Pearlescent Worsted.
