Hello, my sweet sunbeam! This week, I have a delightful treat to share with you. It is a garden inspired, crochet shawl called Silva, and I’d love to tell you more about it!
Silva was designed by Elisabeth Carr. When asked about her debut design, Elisabeth said, “Silva is Latin for forest, woodland, or garden. In keeping with the theme of the kit, this shawl takes us through a garden theme in four repeating sections: the trellis, the grass, the flowers, and the garden wall. The first row of the shawl is the bottom right side, and then the shawl is worked with decreasing rows on one side. This causes the shawl to remain straight across the top, but still taper into a triangular shape.”
This Intermediate level pattern is for those who feel comfortable with crocheting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include simple decreases, color changes, puff stitches, working a double crochet stitch two rows below, and moving yarn up the side without cutting.
Our Crema Sock yarn is perfect for this shawl. This yarn is so soft and has beautiful drape. It is a dreamy yarn that takes the dye incredibly well, which results in fabulous, hand-dyed shades! It is made with 70% Superwash Merino Wool and 30% silk.
The sample shown here used approximately 840 yds/768 m total: Color A: 270 yds/247 m, Color B: 300 yds/274 m, and Color C: 270 yds/247 m. The sample shawl was made with our Antique Rose Hues kit.
We made a video showing you how to crochet several of the stitch patterns shown in the design.
The pattern contains written directions only.

HELP! Please. I am trying to make the beautiful Silva shawl and am truly stuck on the garden wall section. Oh how I wish that there was a video for that section. I did the puff stitches on row 20 which is a WS row. For row 21 am I doing a hdc crab stitch with the wrong side facing me? Row 22 says sc2tog but I’m not on the RS.
Totally confused and in desperate need of guidance
Thank you in advance for your assistance
Hi Sheryl,
thank you for your comment. I’m happy to help!
On Row 21 you’re not doing a Crab stitch but with the WS facing you slide your shawl over to the edge you would normally start your row. You should have Color B hanging there. Then follow the instructions of Row 21 with Color B which will be a WS row so the following Row 22 should then be as usual on a RS row.
I hope this makes sense. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
Have a great week. – Johanna 💕
Absolutely loved this pattern. I made 2, one for me, one for my mom and need to make a 3rd for my sister. The video was very helpful and once I understood the pattern, it was really fun to make.
Hello!
I am slowly working on this shawl and am confused as to how I “carry the yard” along if you don’t break the color off. Can you please explain? I am on row 19, 20 and 21.
Thank you!
Hi Laurie,
thank you for your comment. We have a tutorial on how to carry yarn along the edge here: https://blog.expressionfiberarts.com/2021/12/17/how-to-crochet-a-quick-beginner-cowl-conidae-cowl/
I hope this is helpful to you. Have a nice day!- Johanna 💕
