Hello, my beautiful sunbeam! I want to share with you a beautiful knitted swoncho (or is it swancho?) pattern called Königssee. It is sort of a cross between a sweater and a poncho and was designed by Jane Vanselous, and I just love it. Read on to learn more!
Jane says, “Königssee, a lake nestled amongst the Alps in Bavaria, is an extraordinary shade of aqua green. Visit on a sunny day, with the reflection of the blue skies and surrounding mountains, for a truly magnificent site. Nature at its finest. This poncho brings together all the shades of aqua, teal and emerald that can be seen there. By marling the yarns, the colors meld together, making it difficult to tell where one color starts and another stops.”
You will need 1 skein each: (A) Light Sea Blue, (B) Margaret, (C) Still Waters, (D) Hoot, (E) Laguna for all sizes.
Additional skeins: 1 skein (C) for Sizes 2-5; 1 skein (D) for Sizes 3-5; 1 skein (E) for Sizes 4-5
The sample pictured is shown in size 2 and was shortened by 1” in length.
Additional length can be added but will required additional yardage. Please see the Notes section of the pattern for more information.
We filmed a video tutorial for some tips for success in making this swoncho/poncho/sweater. Learn how to marl and how to wet block it, too. Take a look:
This Intermediate level pattern contains both written and charted instructions.

Can you explain why the pattern seems to have you knit on the wrong side and purl on the right side? Odd number rows are RS. Purled sections. But the sweater is stockinette. I have finished the cowl and the reverse stockinette faces me as I knit in the round. After joining, the purl side is still outside. Can you help?
We sent an e-mail to you. 😊
I have the same problem as Kathy. Can you help me, please?
Sure thing! Please write us here: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/contact-us/ and we will be happy to help!
Absolutely gorgeous pattern and yarn.
Hi! Finally ready to start – yay! – but the cast on has me confused already 😳 lol. It states to hold 2 strands of color A but the instructions call for only buying 1 skein of color A…? Am I missing something?
Yes, you can either wind the skein into 2 balls or into a center-pull ball and pull one strand from both the inside and outside. 🙂
Is the DS worked as one stitch or two creating an increase?
The DS is worked as 1 stitch decrease, much like you would work a k2tog.
I am at the lower sleeves section and can’t figure out how to make my row counts match. I made a spreadsheet trying to match the sleeve row, the lower cable stitch pattern, and the colors for each row and I can’t match up all the row counts. Am I the only one confused by this pattern? I find this section very confusing. I would be happy to pay sometime to help me figure it out. I’m so close and was hoping to get to wear it this winter.
Donna, if you’ll send us a message using the contact form at https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/contact-us/ we can help you with this pattern. Thank you.
I am working on the Konigssee pattern and I’m on the shoulder shaping (row 44) doing the size 2.
I began round 44 with the correct number of stitches for my size (132). If I am understanding the pattern correctly, I think it says once I repeat round 44 five more times, I should have 136 stitches. Is this correct? After completing round 44 the first time I now have the 136 stitches. If I repeat it 5 more times won’t that add another 20 stitches since you M1 four times each time you complete the round?
Please let me know if I am misinterpreting the instructions. I don’t want to proceed and have to tear all my work out if I keep adding 4 sts with each of the additional 5 times of round 44!
Please advise.
Hi, Cindy. Because the instructions for Round 44 are for Sizes 2-5 (see heading/not 1-5), I believe you repeat Round 44 0 more times: “Rep Rnd 44 0 (5, 5, 3) more times 132 (136, 156, 156, 162) sts,” resulting in 132 stitches. You should be looking at the first number in the parenthetical number sequence, since size 1 is omitted from these instructions. Does that give you the correct stitch count?
