Hello, my twinkling star! I am delighted to share this week’s shawl pattern with you. This lovely knitted shawl pattern is called De Lacaille, and I hope you love this adventurous beginner level shawl!

De Lacaille was designed by Janica York Carter, and she says, “This knit version of the crochet Doradus pattern is named for Abbé Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille, (1713–1762), a French astronomer and geodesist who named 14 of the 88 constellations. From 1750 to 1754, he studied the sky at the Cape of Good Hope in present-day South Africa. During that time, he observed the Tarantula Nebula, also known as 30 Doradus, and catalogued it as a “Nebulae of the First Class.” The star-forming region of 30 Doradus is one of the largest located close to the Milky Way. About 2,400 massive stars exist in the center of 30 Doradus.”

Like its crocheted sister, Doradus, de Lacaille features eyelets on a plain stitch background, allowing the colors and sparkle of the yarn to shine through.

We filmed a video tutorial for you showing you the stitches needed to knit this dazzling shawl! It’s easier than you think!

Have a look:

The sample shown features our Elegant Hues Kit, but you can use any 4 skeins of our Sparkle DK yarn to make this shawl.

The total yards used for this sample: approximately 844 yds (218 yds Color A, 211 yds Color B, 214 yds Color C, 201 yds Color D).

We sincerely hope you love knitting this shawl. Its subtle sparkle makes me think of a frosty winter morning with the stars still lingering in the sky as the pink sunlight starts to bounce off the clouds!
