Hello, my wonderful friend! Our knitting pattern for you this week is our Sweetgum cardigan! Ohhhh it’s so cozy and wearable and the color options are endless.
Sweetgum is an Advanced Beginner to Intermediate project. Some cable experience is helpful, but not necessary. Top down construction requires no advanced finishing skills. Entire cardigan is knit carrying 2 strands together. Simple yarn overs create the buttonholes.
This beautiful cardigan is made with our Twisted Tweed Sport Yarn in Fool’s Gold, Marianne, and Spruce for a warm and comfy cardigan that will go over any top and will keep you warm on cool nights. Oh what colors will you choose?
The yarn is held double throughout so you’ll be able to knit it fairly quickly.
We have filmed a video tutorial for you showing you how to work the amazing German Short Rows you’ll find in this pattern. I think you’re going to LOVE this technique. Have a look:
This cardigan features raglan sleeves. The shaping is done with German Short Rows. This cardigan can be made longer. However, adjusting length will affect the amount of yardage needed.
I think you’re REALLY going to love how easy it is to work German Short Rows. I just may switch to using these from here on out!
The size 3 sample shown used approximately 1,510 yards total of Twisted Tweed Sport yarn, but you can substitute another sport weight yarn instead, if you prefer. You’ll hold the yarn double throughout your project and this helps to create the gorgeous color changes you see in this pattern.
I hope knitting you love knitting this cardigan as much as we loved prepping it for you! This beauty was designed by Jane Vanselous. Enjoy this beautiful gift of a day!

This is beautiful!❤️
Thank you for sharing this beautiful pattern

The unique front band drew me to this beautiful pattern. I wonder if you could please tell me what the corrections on the new download might be. I started before I knew there was a revision and I don’t want to go any farther until I know what the correction(s) might be. Thanks again for this lovely cardigan pattern.
There were some corrections related to cast on stitches etc. I would encourage you to download the newest version of the pattern to see if your size was one that was affected. Thank you so much! ☺️
I have a beautiful Dewey dk kit of three skeins of yours and I am wondering if that might work to make this beautiful cardigan. I see two strands are held together, so perhaps I could use a lighter weight strand for the second? Any advice would be appreciated. I am an experiment crocheted but and venturing into knitting. Thank you!!
I think that would work! I would just do a gauge swatch and making sure you are getting gauge and you should be good. Hope this helps.
I am about to start this pattern. I made gauge with one strand, is this right? Also I cannot work out what BB3 at the start of r2 means or BHB3 at the end of the row. Can you please help.
Hi Susan,
I’m happy to help with your question. The gauge swatch should be made with 2 strands held together if you use sport weight. If you use worsted weight instead then you only use one strand.
Regarding your second question: The abbreviations BB and BHB refer to the Button Band and Buttonhole Band instructions, meaning BB3 for example refers to the Button Band Row 3 and when it calls for BHB3 you follow the instructions for the Buttonhole Band Row 3.
I hope this makes sense and you can continue with your cardigan.
have a great week. – Johanna 💕
I am about to cast on for the size 8 but the cast on number is 121 while the size 7 cast on number is 129. Is this correct? Thank you for your help.
Hi Tonia, thank you for your message. I checked the pattern and the CO stitches are correct. Even though you will start of with less stitches than size 7 in the beginning after finishing the raglan shaping (p.7) you will have more stitches than the smaller size.
I hope this makes sense and is helpful. Happy knitting! – Johanna 💚
