I love the Japanese call and response that takes place when someone returns home at the end of the day. If someone else is already at home, they usually greet the returnee with the phrase, “okaerinasai,” or just “okaeri,” which is usually translated as “welcome home,” or “welcome back.” The returnee answers with, “tadaima,” which usually translates as “I’m home,” or “I’m back.” It doesn’t have quite the same ring to it in English, but I love the sentiment. I named this pattern Tadaima because, to me, wearing it is like being greeted upon returning home at the end of a long day. It’s a warm and friendly hello that makes me want to say, “I’m home.”
•I wanted this piece to feel like a hug, something comfortable and cozy the wearer can fall into and wrap around themselves.
•I loved the idea of a tall curved hem that wraps around the body, so after some trial and error, I decided on a short-row hem to get the shaping I wanted. A little fiddly maybe, but the payoff is sooo worth it!
•Even though the body is meant to be a little oversized (and can be blocked out to be even bigger, if preferred), I didn’t want it to be a potato sack, so I went with smaller armholes and sleeves than you normally find on a drop shoulder design, so the sleeves are more snug and not in the way.
•Some short-row shaping in the trim makes for a shawl-type collar that can be worn up or down but isn’t ridiculously huge.
•As a final touch, I included thumbholes, so the sleeves can extend past the wrist and keep hands warm, too. I love thumbholes! I will sometimes buy clothes on the basis of thumbholes alone, so for me, this was the perfect way to finish this piece!
