Hello, my treasured friend! Today, I’m so excited to tell you about a delightful Granny Square crochet blanket pattern. Keep reading to learn about this week’s gorgeous design and the beautiful yarn we used to make it!

Bertha was designed by Emma Butram. When asked about her pattern, Emma said, “My great-grandmother was named Bertha, and she excelled at making pretty things to decorate her home with whatever supplies were handy. Even during the Depression and World War II when times were difficult, she still managed to keep her family warm and her home pretty with her handcrafted doilies, blankets, and clothes. In honor of her, I designed this Granny Square blanket, which uses six different block designs that all work together to create a snuggly throw blanket. The blocks are based on stitches from 200 Crochet Blocks by Jan Eaton.”

This Intermediate level pattern is for crocheters who feel comfortable with crocheting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include reading written instructions, basic crochet stitches, popcorn and cluster stitches, and working a join-as-you-go border. The pattern includes written instructions, as well as a schematic, and comes with a video tutorial.

Bertha is crocheted with our heartwarming Twisted Tweed Sport yarn. It’s a wonderfully soft and bouncy, unique fiber blend that includes two types of wool that are twisted together, which results in a cool, barber-pole effect with gold, plum and brown Donegal Tweed neps. This yarn base is both earthy, homey, and charming, as well as hip and modern, and the colors are out of this world! Twisted Tweed Sport is a blend of 43% Superwash Merino Wool, 42% Fine Merino Wool, and 15% Donegal with 384 yds/351 m per skein. I love this yarn base for super sweet sweaters and snuggly accessories, shawls, blankets, and more!

The sample shown here was crocheted with The Reading Room Nook Hues Twisted Tweed Sport Kit and used approximately 1,789 yds/1,636 m total: Color A: 261 yds/239 m, Color B: 257 yds/235 m, Color C: 250 yds/229 m, Color D: 246 yds/225 m, Color E: 250 yds/229 m, and Color F: 514 yds/470 m. The colors were used in the following order: A) Burgundy, B) Rust, C) Gold, D) Green, E) Blue, and F) Gray (2 skeins of Color F included in kit).

We filmed a video tutorial showing how to work the special stitches featured in this pattern. Take a look!
