Hello, beautiful! This week, I have an elegant, crochet shawl pattern that I think you’re going to love! Keep reading to learn more about this delightful design!
Subaqueous was designed by Janica York Carter. When asked about this pattern, Janica said, “A standard crocheted ripple stitch gains extra movement with short rows that create wedges of undulations reminiscent of sand waves in sea beds. Each wedge has a simple two-row repeat, alternating between rows of single crochet and double crochet stitches. Working some rows into back loops only and others into both loops adds even more texture. The last row of each wedge smoothes out the short rows with stair-stepped stitch lengths at each transition. Although the pattern appears intricate, it’s really a simple combination of basic stitches.”
This Adventurous Beginner level pattern is for crocheters who are ready to combine basic stitches in new ways. Techniques include short rows, working in back or front loops only, and an optional foundation single crochet beginning.
Subaqueous is crocheted with our amazing Luster Sport yarn. Once you’ve worked with Luster Sport, you’re going to fall head-over-heels in love with its yummy, squishy goodness! Luster Sport is a blend of 50% Superwash Merino Wool and 50% Lyocell, a plant fiber that provides the glow of silk without the price, and the shine is out-of-this-world stunning! Luster Sport has 395 yds/361 m per full-sized skein.
You’ll need at least four skeins of Luster Sport yarn to crochet this pattern, and we used our Quiet Hues Luster Sport Kit for the sample shown here. Our sample used approximately 1,577 yds / 1,442 m total: Color A: 394 yds / 360 m, Color B: 394 yds / 360 m, Color C: 394 yds / 360 m, and Color D: 395 yds / 361 m. The sample used nearly all the yarn in the yarn kit.
We made a video tutorial showing how to get started crocheting this shawl. Grab your hook and some yarn, and follow along with me!
This pattern includes written instructions and comes with Row Map to help guide you.

I would like to purchase the two fingerweight yarns that are specified on the beginner pattern that is free for today. Please put this together with the yarns and the needles
I am afraid to use circular needles at this time as I have failed miserably with them so far. Please send me an invoice so that I can pay you and let me know if you have a video to help me do this shawl as I am disabled and the videos would be helpful.
Hi Leslie,
thank you for your message. I’m very sorry but we don’t offer this service. You can purchase the yarn and the pattern from our website here: https://expressionfiberarts.com/ but we don’t sell needles in our shop at this point. Also the videos/tutorials that are attached to the pattern page are the only ones that we provide with each pattern, we don’t make additional video unless we update the pattern and require a revised video.
I’m very sorry about that. If you need further assistance with the purchase process please send us a message through the contact form at https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/contact-us/
Have a nice day! – Johanna 🩵
