Hello, my dazzling diamond! Today, I have a lightweight, lacy, knitted shawl that features a variety of delightful stitch patterns. I just know you’re going to enjoy making this lovely design, so be sure to keep reading to learn all about this week’s new pattern!

Flottante was designed by Patricia Liefeld. When asked about the inspiration for this pattern, she said, “I love getting in our RV and traveling to new places. The places we’ve seen and the experiences we’ve had will stay with me forever. I keep the memories in my numerous journals and in the items I knit and crochet.”

“The asymmetrical shawl Flottante (a French word for ‘floating’) was inspired by a trip to Yosemite. Our camping spot was along the Tuolumne River. I loved sitting at the river’s edge, watching the water as it made its way over rocks and logs (represented by the stripes and garter stitches), and at times, flowing free (represented by lace stitches in the Waves section), and finally, rippling against the river’s edge. This shawl, not only asymmetrical in shape, but also in design, is made with knit and purl stitches, along with typical stitches used in lace stitches. Lace weight yarn was used to keep this shawl light and airy. I hope you enjoy making this shawl and sharing a little bit of my travels with me.”

This is an Intermediate level pattern that is perfect for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include basic lace stitches, color changes, and optional charts.

The Flottante shawl is knitted with our sumptuous Yak Silk Lace yarn, which is pure luxury! When yak is combined with silk, you get an amazingly soft, lustrous, silky, saturated yarn that is impossible to ignore! Yak Silk Lace is a luscious, 2-ply blend of 50% ultra-soft yak down fiber and 50% lustrous silk. It’s buttery, creamy to the touch, and shimmery with dreamlike softness. Colors dyed onto this yarn base are rich, saturated, and bold. Perfect for sensual, soft shawls, scarves, baby clothes, socks, hats, and whatever you desire! Hold it double for projects requiring a thicker yarn. Projects made with Yak Silk Lace will be adored and treasured for years on end, and it’s loaded with yardage with 680 yds/630 m per skein!

The sample shown here was knitted with one skein each of colors A) Aquarius Mist Yak Silk Lace and B) The Water Bearer Yak Silk Lace. Our sample used approximately 800 yds/732 m total: Color A: 520 yds/475 m and Color B: 280 yds/256 m.

We made a video tutorial showing how to work some of the special stitches found in this pattern. Take a look!
