Hello, my lovely fiber friend! Today, I have a stunning, knitted sweater to share with you, and it features a lovely gradient fade, a gorgeous twisted cable motif, and the option to mix and match yarn bases and even yarn weights! I think you’re going to love its enthralling design! Keep reading to learn all about the Firebird sweater pattern.
Firebird was designed by Debi Maige. When asked about this design, Debi said, “The Firebird is a character from Russian folklore that symbolized rebirth, beauty, and magic, and all three characteristics are represented in this sweater’s three-color fade. This very simple but effective pullover is worked bottom up to the underarms, separated for the front and back, and then joined at the shoulders with a three-needle bind off. The sleeves are picked up at the armholes, and the fade is worked in reverse. The neckline is finished with a twisted rib. The twisted cable motif on the front is reminiscent of the Firebird’s feathers, as it travels from the darkness into the light. For an even simpler garment, you can use a single color of yarn.”
This Advanced level pattern is ideal for the adventurous knitter who loves to tackle something a bit more complicated. Skills/concepts include chart reading, yarn placement planning, two-stitch cables, decreasing, short rows, and garment sizing.
The Firebird pattern comes in sizes XS (S, M, L) (XL, 2XL, 3XL) (4XL, 5XL) and was knitted with three of our favorite yarn bases: Resilient Sock, Sparkle DK, and Pearlescent Fingering. All three yarns were dyed with the same formula, but the color on each yarn base appears slightly different due to the ways in which different fibers take the dye.
The sample shown here used A) Cherry Red Resilient Sock (400 yds per 4 oz skein), B) Cherry Red Sparkle DK (275 yds per 3.5 ounce skein), and C) Cherry Red Pearlescent Fingering (550 yds per 4 oz skein) and is a size Small modeled on a 34″ (86 cm) bust with 2″ (5 cm) of positive ease.
You’ll need the following amounts of yarn for the Firebird pattern: Yarn 1: 300-625 yds (274-572 m), Yarn 2: 433-938 yds (396-858 m), and Yarn 3: 213-463 yds (195-423 m), depending on the size you make. Use the table on page 6 of the pattern to find the amount of yarn needed for your size. If you wish to make the torso longer, you will need additional yardage.
Don’t be afraid to mix and match different yarn bases and weights when making this pattern! Or choose one of our other yarn combinations that are being hand-dyed specifically for this sweater, including our Cognac, Enigmatic, and Mountain Lake colorways.
We made a video tutorial showing how to read the pattern chart for right and wrong sides and how to work the cables featured in this pullover. Take a look!
The pattern contains written and charted instructions, and you will need to be able to read a chart to knit this sweater.

Looks so soft and comfy
The chart im confused on if I’m in the round am I not always on the right side of my work I’m just confused as to why it says wrong side instructions if I’m always on the right side
Hi Crystal, thank you for your question. You’re right for the body of the sweater you’re working in the round and only have right side rounds but once your reach your armhole location you will start working flat, which means you will need instructions for wrong side rows as well.
I hope this makes sense and explains it. Please, let me know if you have further questions.
Have a nice day! – Johanna 💞
Hello Darling, I am working the pattern nicely, but I have a question. At what point will be the 1 Rt on right/wrong side used? If at all? They are described nicely, but they are nowhere in the chart 🤷♀️ Is there a mistake, should be in row 7 or somewhere? Sorry, just unsure how to proceed.
