Hello, my little buttercup! We are starting this month with a lovely treat for all you knitters – a beautiful poncho with optional seaming instructions to turn it into a unisex vest. Keep reading to learn more!

Cellist was designed by Anne Robinson. When asked about her pattern, Anne said, “Cellist is a modern, boxy, unisex poncho that is designed to be worn as a layering piece. With minimal shaping, this is an ideal first garment for an intermediate knitter. The piece has a tall, cabled funnel neck and cabled edging. The main body is knit flat and seamed together at the end. A diamond shaped cable pattern that’s filled with seed stitch runs up the center of the garment, and high slits complement the sides. This design was inspired by a Korean television drama in which the main character Hae Won is a cellist who is questioning her path in life. The series took place in the dead of winter, and she wore many beautifully knitted, warm, layering pieces to keep her warm, as she rediscovered who she was and her place in her community.

I just adore the beautiful cable panel that’s featured in this pattern. It reminds me of how we are all connected to one another, not just within our families or through work, but with everyone and everything around us, each and every day!

This Intermediate level pattern is for those knitters who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include seed stitch, garter stitch, reverse stockinette stitch, cables, and optional seaming.

The sample shown here was knitted with our Limited Edition North DK yarn, which is a soft, gentle, flexible yarn that feels amazing on your skin and has a lovely bounce! Our North DK is a blend of 66% Extra Fine Merino Wool and 34% Pima Cotton with 264 yards (241 meters) per 3.5 oz/100 g skein.

The sample shown used approximately 1052 yds/962 m total and is being modeled on a 34″ (86 cm) bust with 7.5” (19 cm) of positive ease. For our sample, we used four skeins of color Toronto North DK.

The pattern is offered in sizes XS to 3XL. You will need four to six skeins of North DK, depending on the size you choose. Additional information is provided in the pattern on how you can seam this poncho and turn it into a vest.

Our North DK is a Limited Edition yarn, so please order enough to complete your project because once this year’s colors are gone, they’re gone for good!

We filmed a video tutorial showing how to work the cable stitches featured in this pattern. Take a look!
