Hello, lil’ buttercup! This week, I have a richly cabled cardigan that I think you’ll adore. Keep reading to learn more about it!
Rubato was designed by Emma Butram. When asked about this pattern, Emma said, “One of the most beautiful things on this planet is a whale. Enormous, yet graceful; powerful, yet gentle. I once had the privilege of seeing a blue whale off the coast of Monterey Bay in California when I was young, and it was an experience I’ll never forget. Rubato is a musical term that literally means ‘to rob time.’ When a composer adds this notation to a piece, it gives the performer the liberty to stretch the tempo to enhance the emotional impact of the music. Some experiences in life are so wonderful that you want to rob time, so you can savor them a little longer – my whale watching trip definitely being one of them!”
“I designed this cardigan to be something simple, yet featuring complicated looking cables that would make it nice for those occasions when you want to savor life in both comfort and elegance. Rubato is knit with a cotton blend yarn, so it’s soft and springy, but not overly warm. The cables are an adaptation of a stitch found in Norah Gaughan’s Knitted Cable Sourcebook. I hope you enjoy this sweater and can find ways to enjoy the special rubato moments in life.”
This Intermediate level pattern is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include reading a pattern, working increases and decreases, seaming the sweater, working cables from a chart, and picking up stitches for the button band and neckline.
Rubato was made with our soft and silky Moongleam Fingering yarn, which is an incredibly soft, 2-ply yarn that has a delightful shimmer and drape. It is breathable and light and amazing for warmer climates. Moongleam Fingering is a blend of 50% Cotton and 50% Mulberry Silk with 437 yds/400 m per 3.5 oz/100 g skein.
The sample shown here was knitted with the color Dream Cloud Moongleam Fingering and is shown in a size Small modeled on a 34″ (86 cm) bust with 2″ (5 cm) of positive ease.
The pattern is offered in sizes XS-3XL, and you’ll need four to six skeins of Moongleam Fingering depending on the size you select.
Click here to watch a video in which I show you how to pick up and knit stitches for the button band and the buttonhole band, how to work the buttonholes, and how to sew on the buttons.
The pattern contains written and charted instructions, and you will need to be able to read a chart to make this cardigan.
