Hello, my sweet sunbeam! I have an eye-catching, convertible crochet pattern to share with you today. You can customize this design to make a ruana or a poncho. It’s totally up to you, and I hope you’ll read on to learn more about it.
Makani was designed by Elisabeth Carr. When asked about her design, Elisabeth said, “Makani is Hawaiian for ‘wind’ or ‘breeze,’ which is perfect for this light and breezy ruana/poncho pattern. The stitches used include chains, single crochets, and double crochets done in repeating sections, making this pattern perfect for a beginner. Both versions are worked lengthwise in two rectangles, which are sewn together, leaving room for the neck.”
This Adventurous Beginner level pattern is for crocheters who are ready to learn some new skills or stitch combinations. Stitches and skills include foundation double crochet, chains, single crochet, double crochet, and making three double crochets together.Makani is made with our Yak Merino Sport yarn, which is a warm and resilient, 3-ply yarn with next-to-skin softness and excellent stitch definition. This yarn is a blend of 70% Superwash Merino Wool and 30% Yak. It has 329 yds/300 m per skein.
The ruana and the poncho are both made the same, so their yardages are the same. They are just sewn together differently. Both samples shown used approximately 1520 yds/1390 m total: Colors A-C and E used: 303 yds/277 m each and Color D: 308 yds/282 m.
Yak Merino Sport is a Limited Edition yarn, so be sure to order all you need for your project because once it’s gone, it’s gone for good!
The ruana sample shown here was made with colors: A) Everyday, B) Enough, C) Envision, D) Live, Laugh, Love, and E) Brave Yak Merino Sport. You’ll need one skein of each color.
The poncho sample shown here was made with colors: A) Worthy, B) Imagine, C) Bold, D) Dare, and E) Fearless Yak Merino Sport. You’ll need one skein of each color.
