Hello, my sparkling sapphire! This week, I have a gorgeous shawl pattern that I absolutely can’t wait to share with you, so let’s goooooooo!
Arazzo was designed by Monica Wesley. When asked about this design, Monica said, “Arazzo is the Italian word for ‘tapestry,’ and the two Mosaic designs and stitch textures included in this shawl resemble the look of a woven fabric or a tapestry. Arazzo is a rectangular shawl that is knitted flat in one piece and is composed of repeating sections of Seed Stitch, Woven Stitch, and two-color Mosaic knitting. You’ll need five different colors of contrasting yarn for this beautiful, repeating, symmetrical pattern, and instructions are included to customize both the length and width. Additionally, each row is written out in the Mosaic sections, so you don’t need to remember Mosaic knitting ‘rules’ to complete those stitch patterns.”
This Intermediate level pattern is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made several projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include Mosaic knitting, working with more than one yarn at a time, slipping stitches, repositioning the yarn between the front and the back, and carrying nonworking yarn up the side.
Arazzo was made using our luscious Buttery Sport yarn. This yarn is a fun and boingy, 100% Superwash Superfine Merino Wool yarn that’s squishy and bouncy! No itchiness or scratchiness here! What’s not to love about this super soft, lush, and cuddly sport-weight yarn that’s also machine washable? This 2-ply yarn produces fat, full stitches and is wonderful for projects of all types! 300 yd/274 m per 3.5 oz/100 g skein.
The sample shown here used our Roasted Hues Kit – Dark Teal (C1), Light Brown (C2), Light Teal (C3), Dark Brown (C4) & Cream (C5); 300 yds/274 m (3.5 oz/100 g) per skein [1500 yds/1370 m per kit].
189 to 245 yds (173 to 224 m) of each color were used in the sample, approx. total 1,106 yds/1,011 m; [C1: 237 yds/217 m, C2: 228 yds/208 m, C3: 245 yds/224 m, C4: 207 yds/189 m, & C5: 189 yds/173 m].
We made a video demonstrating how to work a few rows of the center Mosaic section and how to steam block this shawl. Be sure to take a look!
The pattern contains written and charted instructions.

I finished several mosaic knitted cowls in a mosaic stitch pattern. The Arrazo pattern is beautiful.
I thoroughly enjoy your videos! Thank you so much for taking the time to make them. I have done mosaic knitting before, but the center mosaic section of this Arazzo just would not let go of me. So I knew I just had to knit it. I just ordered quite a bit of EFA yarn for the MKAL, so ordering yarn for this will have to wait a bit. Thank you, Chandi and Monica!
I have never done mosaic but this shawl inspires me to try it and I so appreciate your video on how to do this. You have such beautiful patterns and I love the Free Pattern Friday. Thank you.
I have never tried mosaic knitting but I’m very excited to do this one. It’s beautiful! Thank you for the pattern and the instructional video.
I will be trying my first mosaic pattern on a smaller project (cowl) with a couple of friends, then we are planning on moving on to this beautiful shawl. We enjoy doing the same projects with different color yarns and comparing and sharing along the way. It’s a lot of fun. The video will come in handy. Wish us luck with this one!
When this pattern was first posted I kept telling my husband I wanted to order it but never did. Finally I did but not because of the cost I have spent more money on other yarn for projects without any pattern. This is the first mosaic pattern I have ever done in my 10 years of knitting. At first it may be intimidating if one has never done it before. After watching the videos it was a cinch. Don’t talk yourself out of this project. I did use the same colors as in the picture posted. Even though the pattern said to use a size 7 knitting needle. I actually went down to a size 5 to do the pattern, I do knit a little loose. By doing this It did compensate for not using the suggested size. For the bind off I used a size 6 that way there would be some give and stretch. After getting part of the pattern done I did notice I might not have enough yarn to finish. The 2 that I did run out of was the light teal and the dark teal. I did order another kit. There was only about 3 yards short on these two colors The light brown was close but I did have enough by about 2 yards maybe. As a result I have enough yarn left to make something else from the second kit. I made this for our local county fair this year and am anxious to see how it does in judging. I do have My e-mails are full of many other free patterns that have been downloaded. This yarn is so soft and scrumptious I will definitely be ordering much more in the soon coming future. If anyone could help me out I do have one question is there a way to wash the shawl so the colors don’t bleed being that the yarn is hand dyed?
Hi Stacy, I’m so glad you enjoyed making this pattern. Regarding your question, I’d suggest using Shout color catchers sheets and maybe use a little bit of Synthrapol in your wash water. This is a special detergent that removes any loose dye and keeps it from bleeding on to other colors when you wash it.
I hope this will work. Have a nice day! – Johanna 💕
