Hello, my sweet snowdrop! I am incredibly pleased to announce our 2023 yearlong Mystery Crochet Along (MCAL) is here! Our first yearlong MCAL in 2022 was wildly popular, so we can’t wait to do it with you again! I do hope you’ll read on to learn how you can join in on the fun.
Multivalence was designed by Janica York Carter. She says, “The meditative properties of mandalas are appreciated by cultures and philosophies throughout the world. A mandala’s circular form ranges from simple to intricate, inspiring moments of inward and outward reflection. People create mandalas from a variety of materials, from the impermanence of sand to the solidity of carved stone. Multivalence is formed from yarn that is sumptuous in both color and texture. As you crochet each section, each round, each stitch, hone your focus. Be mindful of the feel of the yarn as it slips through your fingers. Note the soft sounds of the hook moving through the yarn. Watch as each movement creates a stitch that flows into another to form unique patterns. Breathe deeply and slowly, pull your tongue away from the roof of your mouth as you unclench your jaw, and drop your shoulders down and back. Know that in this moment, you are creating art, and enjoy the process.”
This pattern is an Adventurous Beginner to Intermediate level pattern and is for those crocheters who are ready to combine a variety of stitches while working in the round.
To crochet Multivalence, you will need 12 different colored skeins of our luxurious, dreamy soft Mirage Sport yarn or an equivalent amount of yarn/yardage in another sport-weight yarn. For Clue #1, we used Maple Mirage Sport.
Each month, we’ll let you know which color we used for that clue, but you can also create your own color combination. We DO recommend that you choose colors with a good amount of contrast among them, and crochet Multivalence with at least two different colors.
Mirage Sport is a beautiful, sport-weight blend of 70% Superwash Merino Wool, 10% Natural Baby Camel, 10% Cashmere, and 10% Mulberry Silk. So unbelievably scrumptious! Luscious and supremely soft with a gorgeous drape and structure. 350 yds/320 m per skein.
While gauge is not crucial to this project, it will affect the amount of yarn needed. If you wish to make a blanket that only uses 12 skeins of Mirage Sport yarn, you’ll want to make sure you match the gauge listed in the pattern.
We filmed a video for Clue #1. Take a look to learn more about the 2023 Mystery Crochet Along, and follow along as I show you how to work the special stitches included in Clue #1.
We will also be having a yearlong contest for this pattern with prizes! It will be hosted solely on Ravelry. Click HERE to learn more and to sign up for the MCAL. I hope you’ll join us to get in on all the fun!
I appreciate you reading this far, and if you’d love to get brand new, premium knit and crochet patterns weekly, just hop onto our email list there on the site. We list new patterns most Fridays, and many are free for a limited time. I hope to see you there.
Talk to ya soon.
XOXOXO Chandi
Hi Chandi! I love following you. You make so many wonderful creations 😁 I am going to do your Mystery Crochet Along and wondering if you will be giving out the list of all yarn colors so I can get them ordered? I have already ordered and received your first 3 hanks 🎉 Thank you in advance 😁
Hi Wanda,
welcome to the MCAL! Unfortunately, we can’t give you list of all the colors. First of all it’s a mystery make-along so we want the colors and the pattern to be a surprise. We, however, understand that ordering every skein separately can be expensive due to shipping so we’re releasing the colors in batches of 3. Furthermore, some of the colors are new and specifically dyed for the MCAL and MKAL and not available yet.
I hope this makes sense and I’m very sorry about that.
Enjoy working on your MCAL And have a fabulous weekend. – Johanna 🥰
I am participating in both C/KALs and looking forward to working on them.
Is there a certain day each month the new clue comes out?
I am participating in the MCAL and looking forward to the next clue. Like Teresa above, I’m wondering if there is a certain day each month when the new clue comes out.
Hi Pam,
thanks for reaching out! Awesome, that you’re participating in this year’s MCAL. We don’t have a specific day set each month for the release of the next clue but I can let you know that the next crochet clue will be released next week.
I hope that helps! Have a lovely weekend. – Johanna 💕

Does Aelinn come only in crochet or is there a knitting pattern?
Hi Patricia,
we don’t have an exact knitting version of Aelinn but have you checked out our Malvarosa (https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/products/malvarosa.html) or Creery pullovers (https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/products/knit-your-first-sweater-course.html)?
I hope they are what you’re looking for.
Have a nice day! – Johanna 💕
Hi
I am super excited to be able to start something like this. I am a bit confused with Mcal and mkal.. I am doing Multivlence but do not know which is which?
Hi Ashley, thank you for your question. I’m happy to help!
The Multivalence is the MCAL (mystery crochet-along). I hope this answers your question. Please, let me know if I can assist you with anything else!
Have a wonderful day! – Johanna 💕
Hi, I’m having issues with row 9 of this clue. My project is curling up and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong…can you please help?
Hi Shronda, thank you for your comment. I’ll do my best to help out.
First of all, are you referring to Row 9 of clue #1? Just checking.😉 I’m not 100% sure what’s going wrong since I don’t know
exactly what you’re doing. Do you have the correct stitch count after finishing this round? You should have 32 dc and 32 sc.
Also if you haven’t downloaded the newest/updated version of it yet, please do so by going to the pattern page (https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/products/multivalence-2023-mcal-mystery-crochet-along.html) or download it from your account in orders again. We’ve had a few updates since this clue was released, so I just want to make sure you have the newest version.
Another helpful place for questions or in case you want to compare your work with others is our MCAL 2023 Ravelry thread. Here is the link to it: https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/expression-fiber-arts/4238106/1-25
Your question might have been asked and answered there already.
I hope this helps but if it doesn’t please don’t hesitate to reach out to us via the contact form at https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/contact-us/ I’m sure we can figure it out!
Have a nice week! – Johanna 💕
