Hello, my beautiful rainbow! This week I want to share with you a beautiful knitted shawl pattern called Duga. This beautiful shawl was designed by Janica York Carter, and it goes along with the 21 day Challenge that we will be starting.
Read on to hear more!
Duga is the Croatian word for rainbow. No matter the language, a rainbow remains a symbol of hope and renewal for people throughout the world. The Kaleidoscopic Hues Luster Sport Kit provides a rich palette to wrap yourself in the beauty and comfort of a rainbow.
Duga, an adventurous beginner-friendly pattern, is worked entirely in garter stitch. German short rows, which are far easier than you think, create the wedge shapes that give this long wrap its extra flare on each end.
We have filmed a video tutorial for you showing you how to work the pattern. Take a look:
This Adventurous Beginner level pattern contains written instructions only.
To go along with this pattern, we will be hosting a 21- day Challenge over on Ravelry! Believe it nor not, this pattern can be made in 21 days, if you commit to making 1 wedge every 3 days. We’ll have lots of fun and some prize drawings along the way. Click HERE to read all about it and sign up!

Hello, I am starting to cast on for this beautiful shawl but I have to cast on 500 stitches to achieve the length. Do I still have to do short rows after every 5 stitches or should I knit more stitches before turning?
Hi Farah,
thank you for your comment. Since you have to cast on almost double the stitch count than the original sample, I’d say you can probably do the short rows every 10 stitches instead.
I hope it works out. Have a nice day! – Johanna 💕
Thank you so much.
I am currently knitting the duga shawl. I have a question. At the end of the first strip it says “fasten off”. What does this mean?
Carla, that means you can cut your yarn. 🙂
Hey there i need your help.. i m confused for the best yarn.. can you please suggest that which yarn I should choose??
If you’re planning to make the Duga, it was designed with this yarn kit: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/products/kaleidoscopic-hues-luster-sport-kit.html
You can also choose any colors from this yarn base: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/categories/sport/luster-sport.html
I am just finishing up this beautiful shawl (using the kaleidoscope yarn) and have two questions. First, what is the best bind-off method for this pattern? My bind-offs tend to “flare,” and I would like to avoid that. Also — do you have any pattern suggestions for my surplus yarn? I have quite a lot left over!
It sounds like a stretchy bind off might help with your edge flaring. This isn’t our site, but I thought it was a really interesting resource related to your issue: https://www.susannawinter.net/post/updated-comparison-of-20-bind-off-methods
Here are a couple of possibilities for your surplus yarn. You should have enough to make any of these:
Star Train: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/pr
Sonder: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/products/sonder.html
Hello Houndstooth: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/products/hello-houndstooth.html
Hope that helps!
Thank you for the bind-off advice. All went well. But now I’m a bit perplexed by the task of blocking. I’m surprised by the shawl’s asymmetry. Have I made a mistake, or is the shape supposed to be unusual (narrow in the middle with flared ends that are not the same size — three wedge “ends” on one side and four on the other?) What shape am I easing this into when I block? Thanks much!
It sounds like you’ve made it correctly. The shawl is narrower in the middle with flared ends, and you will have three colors that have their wide edges (wedge ends) on one side with the other four colors (wedge ends) on the other side, which does add to the asymmetry. From everything you’ve described, you’ve made it exactly as it’s intended.
Very good — thank you! It is beautiful but very different. This is the first time I’ve ever splurged on a pattern/kit and I am pleased so far.
A final question — my finished shawl is just beautiful, but quite long. If I re-block with warmer water, could I shrink it a bit without damaging it?
Since the Luster Sport is 50/50 Superwash Merino Wool and Lyocell, you probably won’t achieve that much of a reduction because wool is superwash and Lyocell is a plant fiber.
Quick question. Can I shorten the pattern?
I am only 5’2.
Thanks, can’t wait to start it.
Yes, you could definitely shorten it. Because your cast-on edge is the longest edge, just reduce the number of cast-on stitches to a number more suitable for your stature. You’ll need to adjust the math a little bit. Instead of working 200 sts by the end of Row 60, figure out where in the number of stitches that you cast on you want the pointed end of the wedge to end, and then work your math backwards to determine how many knit stitches you work in Row 1. Every time you work Row 3 as written, you work 5 more stitches.
Hi Chandi, this is a beautiful shawl & I have started casting on, but with my yarn weight, I need to cast on 600 stitches. My question is do I still have to do german short rows every 5 stitches or every 10 stitches? Thank you
Thank you so much Chandi for your effort of your knit patterns, YouTube channel and everything presented to us. First of all, I’m sorry if my English language not correct because English is not my fluent language and i hope to understand and answer my question. I paid this pattern and unfortunately my needle filled with 150 stitches, and your pattern say 300 stitches. How can i edit this pattern all rows according to 150 stitches? Is it every number of this pattern divided by 2 or what? Thanks so much <3
Hi Shaheen,
I’d suggest getting a longer circular needle, like a 40″ or even a 47″, all 300 stitches will fit on those needles.
If you’d like to adjust the pattern that will require some math. Yes, you can divide every number on the pattern by 2 and just go by that. You will need to decide if you want to round up or down to the next full number. I hope this makes sense and is helpful. Have a nice day! – Johanna 💛
