Have I got a delightful treat in store for you today. Have you ever wanted to crochet a top, but didn’t know where to begin or felt intimidated? We have the answer for you here with our beginner level crochet Montastraea top pattern and accompanying video with tips and tricks on how to conquer your sweater fears and crochet your first top!
Michelle, the designer, said, “The Montastraea Tee is a beginner friendly crochet pattern. This tee is worked in a continuous round from the top down. No seaming is required! This tee is fitted with approximately 2″ of positive ease. It features a fun open stitch combination and simple capped sleeves.” Easy and doable!
Montastraea was designed by Michelle Ferguson and is a Beginner level pattern. It’s perfect for those who are just beginning or have crocheted a project or two. The stitches include basic crochet stitches, and the garment is worked all in one piece. So no seaming. Hurray! I really think you’re gonna enjoy making this one.
Montastraea uses our Oasis Camel Silk fingering weight yarn and the sample was crocheted in the color Playa. The yarn has 457 m/500 yds per skein. This beautiful blend of 50% camel fiber and 50% mulberry silk will make this beautiful top a true summer wardrobe staple. It drapes and flows beautifully and produces wonderful tops and shawls that hold up well over the years.

Like the calming ocean waves, this beginner crochet top pattern moves and flows and will feel like pure luxury on your skin.
The capped sleeves and rounded neck make this a versatile top for any occasion. Layer it during the cooler months if you prefer. You can also make it a crop top if you want to wear it over dresses (usually what I do). Since it’s top-down, just stop crocheting when you like the length. 🙂

Is there a tutorial on this sweater by chance? I struggle even with the swatch in getting the right number of stitches in each row. I’ve been crocheting for years but always have struggled with ending with right number of stitches at end of each row for some reason and then my edges are wonky! Any tutorials to walk me through this pattern?

I’m stuck on row 2. How does that not increase any sts when 3 are made into 1 and only 1 is skipped?
Then on row3, when it says every sts, does that include the ch 1 space?

I really would like to make this pattern. What other yarn do you recommend for this besides Oasis Silk? You only have two choices for this yarn at the moment. I would like it to be a summer top. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you
We’re currently running low on our Oasis Fingering, but hope to have some back on the site in a few months. We’re still experiencing supply chain issues with this yarn base. Hi Chandi and Team – I am struggling literally with round one (1) to round two (2). I’ve “Loosely chained 111”, but I am confused about joining the round. I’ve been crocheting for 50+ years and this is the first pattern that includes working in the round but there is not an actual indication as to when you “join in the round”. Round one indicates, “hdc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, join to 1st st.” Is this the actual joining in the round (seems chunky)? Past instructions would indicate joining in the round after you have chained the initial number of chain stitches. Where in the pattern is the actual joining in the round? thank you for your question. I’m happy to help you with that.
The joining in the round is as you say at the end of Round 1.
Round 1: 1 hdc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, join to 1st st. (110 hdc)
If you don’t like the join this way you can always join your project right after ch 111 and then start working in the rounds.

Round 2 said to place stitch marker rather than joining the rows, but can I do this pattern by joining each round? Will it still work?

thank you for your comment. Yes, I think you can join in the round instead of placing the marker. But remember to check the note in the Notes section on how to count the starting chains.
