Greetings, Gorgeous!
Have we got a knit pattern for you! Check out this SUPER easy, beginner-friendly knitted shawl pattern:
Sonder is a triangular shawl designed by Chandi Agee. It is a triangle that has a curved inner edge. It is knit from one tip down to the bottom edge, increasing along the way. The sample was done using a marling technique. But the shawl can be done in one color, with more pronounced stripes, or in this gradient/marled fashion. It’s perfect if you are looking for a quick and easy project that is absolutely stunning when finished.
Have a watch! We have filmed a video tutorial for you on how to work this shawl:
The sample shown features our Luster Sport Weight Yarn in Allegory (A) , Fanciful (B), Oxblood (C), Persephone (D). 1 skein each. (Sold as a kit called: Sonder Hues) You’ll need about 1000 yards of sport weight yarn to complete the same size as shown. And no worries – you can’t really run out of yarn on this one as you can just stop knitting any time!
Luster Sport is 3-ply and a blend of 50:50 Merino Wool and Tencel. It has a beautiful shine to it!
If you’re on IG, be sure to post if you make this so we can see! #expressionfiberarts @expressionfiberarts

This looks so lovely !
Although, it seems so loose at the beginning…
I will have to give it a try and see if it is as easy as it looks.
Thank you for this pattern
Did yours have these small open areas along the edge? I am wondering if I am doing something wrong.
That is correct. They are the yarn overs which leave a little bit of an open area. 🙂
Thank you so much just wanted to make sure I was doing it correctly.
No problem!
I’ve started this shawl loving it thank u so much me lovely xx
I don’t see how many stitches on the needle for size…. I’m new at this triangle technique.
US size 5 (3.75 mm) 32” circular needles or larger (for accommodating the
larger number of sts at the end).
Hi, I just love this shawl and color way but don’t knit. What would be a similar pattern for crochet?
Thank you!
We will be sharing the crochet version of this shawl soon. In the meantime, you might like this one: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/products/villiers.html
Hi! Just wondering if you have this pattern written out somewhere? Thks Carla
We do! You can find the pattern here: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/products/sonder.html
Can this be done with fingering weight yarn? I have some beautiful linen blend yarn in my stash I’d like to use.
Absolutely!
Thank you! I just found you on YouTube and when I scrolled down on your website I noticed you are in Charlotte! I am as well. 🙂
I don’t see the kit anymore – is it gone?
Unfortunately, it sold out and we don’t have any more in stock. We should have some more in stock when we get our new shipment in. ❤️
I have just started and along one edge is has these bigger open areas. Is this normal? Mine are about the size of my pinky tip finger. I don’t want to continue just in case I am doing something wrong. I can send a pic if you would like.
Just to say hi from Ireland’. I’m watching your videos resting in bed! I have thoroughly enjoyed the way you present everything and the simplicity and helpfulness of your operation is so nice. I’m a crochet and knitting girl since a small kid in school’. Now as a mid-life adult, it keeps me calm and sane. I usually don’t comment online but hey, why not just say thank you. I wish you all the best.
I am not sure how you can stop at anytime because I do not read how the decreasing is accomplished. It appears you start with 4 sts, and end with 4 sts. Is that correct? If so, where does the decrease begin? I am not familiar with diagonal knitting.
It doesn’t decrease. The pattern continually increases. When you get it the size you like, you simply stop. I hope this helps. Have a wonderful day.
I have started this lovely shawl! Thank you for the pattern and I love your yarns! One silly question: the pattern says to change/mix colors every 9-1/2 inches. Where do you measure from? I think the KTOG edge? Thank you, Sandra
Sandra, great question! Yes, measure from the k2tog edge. 🙂
Please put this little tidbit in the pattern instructions…
This was my first ‘big’ knit project and I love love love it! I’m a crocheter who is just learning how to knit and my fiber-friends were shocked that this was my first real project. The video tutorial was wonderful and I’m working on my next project off your site (Easy Swirling Sea Cowl). I have my eye on my next big project (Worth Wrap), I’m just looking at your yarns to see which ones speak to me. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Congratulations! 💕💕
Should the shawl be a symmetrical triangle as you are knitting? The edge of mine which was the ktgo edge is shorter than the long edge on the needle so its more of a scalene triangle as opposed to a symmetrical one. Have I done something wrong or am I just impatient and it will work itself out as I carry on?
Yes, it is more of a scalene triangle. I hope this helps. 💕
Oh thank goodness! It’s my first knitting project that isn’t just a long rectangle so I almost gave up thinking I’d made a mistake as the two ends were uneven! Thank you for your speedy response.
You were right, I just couldn’t believe how easy this pattern is. I used a variegated sock yarn with plain left over sock yarn from previous projects for the stripes and am really delighted with the outcome. THANK YOU
I bet bored with garter stitch. What others might be done.- perhaps as i change colors, change stitch
My mom just gave me 2400 yards of lace weight yarn. I’m brand new to knitting but would to try this shawl style…. would I just drop my needle size down for lace weight yarn?
Thank you for your time!
Love your videos!
Yes, you would do that. <3
Can
Here I go! Just received the Sonder Kit!!! Your yarn is amazing! Hopefully this will turn out awesome!
Just watching you inspires me!
Thank-you for your kindness,
Kathy
I’m so glad you like it! Happy knitting!
Loved this knit – my first big project. Really struggling with the cast off though. Am I missing something please?

Thanks
IG is short for instagram.
Hi
I am in the mid of this shawl so i have done 2 row repeating then do i have to decrease them.
Hi Smita,
you will repeat rows 1 & 2 until you have reached your final shawl depth (21.5″). Following you will bind off all of your stitches using Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off (https://bit.ly/3RhU2to). I hope this helps you finishing the Sonder shawl.
I’d like some more information on this pattern for triangular scarf
I am trying my first alternating color and it is loose even after knitting two together on the 2nd row. Help!
Hi Nikki, do you mean your first few stitches that you worked in the new yarn color after attaching it for the first time? If so, you might need to pull at the beginning strand a bit to tighten up those stitches. This will get better the more you practice it and will also be less of a problem when you alternate back to the color because it’ll be already attached.
I hope this makes sense and helps. Have a wonderful day! 💕
Chandigarh..I saw on Pinterest that you had this one for free ….is there a way to go to it again so I can get it???

Hi Chandi, I am a beginner knitter and made this shawl and it is beautiful! I gave it to my best friend for her 65th Birthday! I would like to knit another for my sister and would like both ends of shawl to be more or less even in length. How can I do this?
Hope this makes sense. Love your website and videos! 🌺
I started working this and new at knitting do I have to decrease stitches to get other triangle?
A while ago, I saw that there was a kit available for this pattern. I think it had sold out after a while. My question is, am I able to order a kit for this beautiful pattern?
Hi Lyn, thank you for your question. I’m happy to help with that! The Sonder Hues kit is currently available on our site here: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/products/sonder-hues-luster-sport-kit.html otherwise any of the 4-skein Luster Sport kits will work. I’m adding the link for you here also: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/categories/kits/luster-sport.html
Enjoy! – Johanna 💙
