Hello, gorgeous! Today, I have a beginner friendly, zigzag crochet scarf and shawl pattern to tell you all about. I think you’re going to adore making the Sierra scarf and shawl, so I hope you’ll keep reading for all the delightful details!
Sierra was designed by Kristina Smiley. When asked about the inspiration for this pattern, Kristina said, “A reversible design with an easy-to-remember repeating pattern. The small zigzag (chevron) pattern creates a “peaks and valleys” design throughout the scarf/shawl. It also creates a natural progression where the ends flare out. I chose to focus on this aspect in my design and allowed the yarn to do what it wanted when I blocked the finished scarf/shawl.”
This is an Adventurous Beginner level pattern and is perfect for crocheters who are ready to learn some new skills or stitch combinations. Skills include zigzag or chevron pattern. This pattern includes written instructions only.
The Sierra scarf and shawl is crocheted with our yummy Pearlescent Worsted yarn. Pearlescent Worsted is shimmering, heavenly, and wildly popular! It’s a delicious and glowing blend of 50% Superwash Merino Wool and 50% Mulberry Silk that’s luxurious, soft, and gleaming and has 220 yds/201 m per skein. When you combine these fibers into a single-ply yarn, you get subtle differences in tone, as the wool and silk take the dye differently. The colors truly appear to be iridescent!
The shawl sample shown here was crocheted with one Rhetorical Hues Pearlescent Worsted Kit and used approximately 799 yds (730.5 m) total. The original scarf sample was made with two skeins of Glimmer Pearlescent Worsted yarn and used approximately 440 yds (402.5 m) total.
Have a watch! We have filmed a video tutorial for you showing how to crochet this lovely design!

Thank you for the lovely comment Khrysttee! I hope that you have a wonderful new year. ❤️
What a wonderful pattern!! Quick question – what is the repeat so I can make it a bit wider?
Thank you and Happy New Year!!!
Nancy
The foundation chain is a repeat of 10 + 8, but the pattern is a repeat of 10 + 7. Hope this helps! ❤️
I love your patterns (crochet), your yarn, and your positive attitude! Thanks for all the inspiration!
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year!
I’m very excited to start this pattern. It’s so very pretty!
I have a ball and 2/3’s of a second ball (so approximately 370 yards) of your gorgeous Russian Blue pearlescent worsted yarn that I’ve been holding onto while waiting for the perfect pattern. Do you think I’d have enough yardage to complete this pattern without cutting it short?
Thanks, Michelle! It took the full 2 balls to makes this scarf. You could make it thinner, which would allow you to have the same length as the sample. ❤️
Chandi, thank you and Kristina for offering this beautiful Sierra Crochet Scarf! I can’t wait to make it ~ I really do believe this will be a favorite to make again and again in different colors and yarns!
Hello,
I have a quick question regarding this pattern. Once I do the last (sc,ch3, sc) I have 3 sc left but in the pattern it only says to sc in each of the next 2 sc, I will have one sc left, do I leave it or do I sc on it? I think 🤔 I’m lost
Hi Gina, If you have checked the co number is correct and that you crocheted far enough over for the first stitch then you may need to co one less stitch to make it work for you so you have no left over stitches. We each crochet a bit different. Thank you!
I’m having the same problem as the person above, but I don’t understand what you are saying to do. Can you please clarify? Thanks!
Annie, so happy to help! Our pattern support team may be better able to explain. Please feel free to reach out to us here with any specific questions: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/contact-us/

Hi! Just wondering if I want to make the width of the scarf bigger since I want it to be more drape rather than wrap, how many chains should I make?
Hi Jenna, thank you for your message. I’m happy to help.
The Sierra Scarf is based on a multiple of 10+8 so if you choose something like 68 or 78 any variation of that that it should give you a wider scarf.
I hope this answers your question. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. Have a nice day !- Johanna 💕
