Hello, beautiful soul! Today, I have a snuggly, hugably soft, crocheted caridgan pattern for you. You’re going to want to live in this oversized garment! Keep reading to learn all about it!
The Wonder cardigan was designed by Kristina Smiley. When asked about this design, Kristina said, “Wonder is a loose-fitting cardigan that makes you feel like you are wearing a hug. This pattern begins as a simple rectangle and then magically transforms into a comfortable shrug-style cardigan with minimal folding and sewing, making it the perfect project for crocheters who wish to build on their garment making skills to create unique crochet items for their wardrobe.”
This is an Intermediate level pattern that is perfect for those who feel comfortable with crochet and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include single, half double, and double crochet stitches and blocking and seaming techniques.
Wonder was originally crocheted with our Sincere Sock yarn, which is a delightfully soft, fingering-weight treasure that feels like a gentle hug in your hands. Spun from a scrumptious blend of 75% Superwash Merino Wool and 25% Nylon, this yarn offers that perfect balance of cozy softness and lasting durability. No scratchiness, no fuss, just pure comfort! It’s machine-washable (although we always recommend hand-washing your projects), and the way it soaks up color? Absolutely gorgeous! The shades are vibrant, rich, and radiant. With a 3-ply construction for lovely stitch definition and cloud-like squish, this yarn is a dream to work with. Each skein gives you 437 yds/400 m to play with and is perfect for anything your heart can dream up!
We used the following colors for the original sample: (A) Gray Pearl, B) Clover, and C) Seedpod Sincere Sock. Three skeins of Color A and one skein EACH of Colors B and C are needed.
- Gray Pearl Sincere Sock
- Clover Sincere Sock
- Seedpod SIncere Sock
The updated version of Wonder was crocheted with our Moongleam Fingering yarn, which is a soft and silky blend of 50% Cotton and 50% Mulberry Silk. Just heavenly! It’s a 2-ply, fingering weight yarn that is glowing and buttery and perfect for a variety of projects. Shawls and scarves are fantastic, as are sweaters, blankets, home items, and more! Breathable and light and amazing for warmer climates! 437 yds/400 m per skein.
We used the following colors for the updated sample: (A) Smoke, B) Champagne, and C) Clary Sage Moongleam Fingering yarn. Three skeins of Color A and one skein EACH of Colors B and C are needed.
- Smoke Moongleam Fingering
- Champagne Moongleam Fingering
- Clary Sage Moongleam Fingering

I have tried several times to get a written copy of this pattern that is supposed to be free unless I am misunderstanding
The pattern was free for a limited time when it first came out. I think we can do something for you. Please write me here: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/contact-us/ and we will work something out.
I just finished this sweater and am so thrilled with the way it turned out. It took some time to make and I needed to order an additional skein of color A. I could wear this everyday!!!
I’m so glad you like it! ❤️
Hi, firstly, lovely pattern.
I live in a very hot country where even fingering weight yarn will be a little uncomfortable to wear, so is it possible to use lace weight yarn instead? If I ensure it meets the required dimensions, will it still work?
You sure could certainly give it a try. 🧶❤️
This is my “learn-to-crochet-during-covid-19-lockdown ” project. I have completed the rectangle portion and loved working the pattern. I am stuck on how to start the sleeves though. Your video doesn’t go that far. Can you help me out? (I also had to order another skein of colour A)
Thanks.
Sure, what seems to be the problem?
Unfortunate that I can’t buy your pattern since I am located in Canada☹️
It’s a digital product, so it is able to be purchased worldwide. ☺️
When I get to the point to pay it tells me it is not availble in my region🤨
That is strange. e-mail me here: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/contact-us/ and I will make sure you get it. 😊
I have bought the pattern but can’t get to the video on it. Can you help me?
Sure thing! The video is in the blog post. It should have a arrow button on top of the image. If you press it, the video should play. Let me know if this works for you. ❤️
Hello! I just bought the pattern, but the video you have there, is the same 8 minute tutorial and not of the whole pattern. Is this it? Thanks, Valia.
Yes, this is the accompanying video with the pattern.
Why is my comment not sent? What moderation does it need? Why is there a red line on my surname as if it’s invalid? How can I send my comment?
Making this now. When you do the shells is it supposed to looked bunched up?!
A good blocking usually helps show off those stitches that are a little bunched together.
I started this shawl at the beginning of COVID 19 to give to my daughter. It is now finished in colors similar to the pattern. I love it so much that I’m keeping this one for myself and have begun another in totally different yarn to give my daughter for Christmas. Love this design and it does feel like a warm hug.
Hi Chandi!
I bought the yarn in the fingering weight that is suggested as a alternative in the pattern description to make this cardigan. My question is, how will that effect the measurements? I’m not the most knowledgeable crochet person. Will I have to switch the hook size and will that then effect the size of my stitches?! Help! I desperately need this to work! Thanks for any help!
You shouldn’t have to change hook sizes and it shouldn’t change the measurements of the shawl. You should be able to work the pattern as written. I hope this helps. 💕
I’m making this for my daughter and I’m having some difficulty with Row105-107 (107 says repeat 105). 105 was easy because there were a row of HDC previous. 106 has SC, HDC and DC. I hope you can help me. I’m at a standstill. I’m loving it so far.
Sure! We would love to help! Please write us here: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/contact-us/ and we will be able to be provide you with the pattern support. Thank you!
Hi, I love the Wonder Cardigan. However I am having difficulty with row 107 (repeat row 105). Not making sense to me. Please help.
We would love to help! Please write us here: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/contact-us/ and we will make sure we can provide you some support. Thanks!
Is there a video tutorial on how to make tje seam and sleeves? The you tube video does not show any of that.
You can find a video on the seams and sleeves here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqVIepdseWU
Hi Chandi
Happy New Year! I purchased your cashSilk Sock yarn for this project. I just noticed that it has quite a few less yards than your Sincere Sock yarn, (26 yds per skein). Will this be a problem for me? Should I modify the pattern to fit the yardage I have or find another pattern to use this beautiful yarn? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Susan, that yarn is a great choice for this pattern. We didn’t use all of the 5 skeins for the pattern so if you ordered 5 skeins you should be good!
I just purchased the pattern and eager to start. Quick question. Is there a multiple to consider if I want to make this a bit smaller and use a slightly heavier yarn? Transitioning from – hdc into every stitch – to a group of stitches, sk two stitches – suggests to me I need to be careful about this. I’m guessing multiple of 3 plus 2 in the beginning chain. Is that correct?
Thanks for offering this very pretty pattern.
Roseanne, be looking for an email shortly from us! Great question!
Hi, I am just starting this pattern too and would love an answer to this question about the multiple for making the cardigan bigger or smaller. Could you please let me/us know the multiple for adjusting the size of this garment. Thank you!!
Hi Bernadette,
thank you for your question. I’m happy to help.
The Wonder cardigan is set up by a multiple of 3+1. I hope this answers your question and you’ll be able to adjust yoru project accordingly.
Have a great weekend! – Johanna 💕
Hello! I got this pattern for my first attempt at making a jumper! The colours you used are no longer available but that’s okay! You have so many beautiful colour ways! I was wondering if there were other colour ways you would recommend for this pattern? I was thinking magnolia hues with a contrast or frozen rose? Since you recommend the sincere sock and that is 3 ply will any 3 ply do? Or is it best to stick to that combination of wool to nylon? Sorry to bother you with so many questions. I am still very new to crochet and knitting and I’ve only made scarves and shawls
Hi there, no problem at all. I’m here to help. The sample was worked with our Sincere Sock yarn but to be honest any Fingering weight yarn would be suitable for it, you don’t have to stick with with a fiber content of wool and nylon. The Magnolia Hues with Frozen Rose as contrast would look very pretty! Happy New Year. – Johanna 💕
