Hello, sweet soul! I am so thrilled to announce our 2025 yearlong Mystery Crochet Along (MCAL) is here! Our previous mystery make alongs have been wildly popular, so we can’t wait to do it with you again! And did I mention that there will be prizes? Tons of them this year! So I hope you’ll read on to learn how you can sign up and join in on all of the fun!
Connote was designed by Janica York Carter. When asked about this design, Janica said, “‘New year, new me.’ ‘This year‘s gonna be MY year!’ ‘This year, I resolve to…’
“Have you ever said one of those phrases and later chastised yourself? Things don‘t always go as planned, and too often, we become our own worst critics. We forget that yearlong (or longer!) commitments are hard. We fail to extend grace to ourselves in the same way we might extend it to others. Let‘s try to break that bad habit together as we stitch through this project. The goal of this crochet-along is to bring you joy. It’s an opportunity to learn new stitches, to play with unusual stripes, and to create something special, knowing that other crocheters around the world are right beside you, cheering you on. If you don‘t finish, that‘s okay! If you do finish, congratulations!”
“One of my favorite aspects of crochet-alongs is the camaraderie they engender. We celebrate when things go right; we commiserate when things go wrong; we remind each other that no matter how things go, we are in this together. We demonstrate kindness to one another—the same kindness each of us should give ourselves.”
This pattern is an Adventurous Beginner to Intermediate level design and is for crocheters who know basic stitches and are ready to learn texture options such as post stitches, bobbles, and puffs.
To crochet Connote, you will need 12 different colored skeins of our dreamy soft CashSilk Sock yarn or an equivalent amount of yarn/yardage in another fingering-weight yarn. For Clue #1, we used Icy CashSilk Sock yarn.
Each month, we’ll let you know which color we used for that clue, but you can also create your own color combination. We DO recommend that you choose colors with a good amount of contrast among them, and crochet Connote with at least two different colors.
CashSilk Sock is a gorgeous blend of 75% Superwash Merino Wool, 15% Cashmere, and 10% Silk. It’s a dreamy soft, luxurious sock yarn that’s warm, cuddly, squishy, and strong with the tiniest hint of glow. It has a 4-ply structure that results in round, beautifully defined stitches, which is perfect for long-wearing items like sweaters and socks! 410 yds/375 m per skein.
We’re also putting together an alternative set of CashSilk Sock colors that could be used for the 2025 MCAL. The clue colors in this Tranquil Dreams palette are: A) Syrup CashSilk Sock.
We filmed a video for Clue #1. Take a look to learn more about our 2025 Mystery Crochet Along.
We are also having a yearlong contest for this pattern with prizes! And they’re going to be bigger and better than ever with both monthly prizes and HUGE grand prizes! The Mystery Crochet Along event is being hosted solely on Ravelry. Click HERE to learn more and to sign up for the MCAL. I hope you’ll join us to get in on all the fun!
I appreciate you reading this far, and if you’d love to get brand new, premium knit and crochet patterns weekly, just hop onto our email list there on the site. We list new patterns most Fridays, and many are free for a limited time. I hope to see you there.
Talk to ya soon.

Question about mystery pattern. Can I use only two colors and how would I than alternate the colors? Switch each month? Thanks for your help.
Hi Sandy,
thank you for your question and patience. I reached out to Janica, the designer, to confirm and she said the following: “Absolutely. It likely will be obvious how to alternate. Essentially, if you start with a dark color as color A and a light color as color B, then the dark color will be used for A, C, E, G, I, and K. The light color will be used for B, D, F, H, J, and L.”
I hope this answers your question.
Have a lovely day! – Johanna 🩷
How many skeins are required for the first clue?
Hi Helen,
thank you for your question. You will only need 1 skein for each clue every month. I hope this explains it!
Have fun with the MCAL. – Johanna 💜
What are the dimensions of the first clue? The patterns says 86 x 25. But my piece is no way near the length of 86”.
Hi Susi, thank you for your message. I’m happy to help with that. The dimensions given at the top of the pattern are the final dimensions of the finished project, meaning once you finished all 12 clues your project will be 86″ long.
I hope this explains it.
Have a nice day! – Johanna 💛
The first clue says the shawl will be 24 inches wide, and the gauge says 24 rows should be 4 inches. Since the first clue only has 20 rows, I’d say it should be about 3.25 inches.
It sounds like fun! I’m going to give it go for the first time in ages. Now that I’ve decided to participate, I have a question regarding the pattern itself: If I were to use only 3 colours, how should I alternate them..? Thanks in advance. Regards from Argentina.
Hi Maria, thank you for your message. You can alternate your 3 colors however you wish. The pattern can be made with 2-12 colors so it’s totally up to you how you’d like to do it as long as you always 2 different colors in 2 following months and not the same one. I hope this helps. Have a nice day! – Johanna 🌸
What day of the month will each pattern be released?
We don’t have a fixed day set for the clue releases but usually it’ll be during the first week of the month! 💕
Would I still be eligible for the contest if I don’t use the colors specified (I bought the correct yarn from you yet didn’t get the right colors)
Yes, you will still be eligible, even if you don’t use our yarns. Just make sure to finsih your clues in time and post them in the Ravelry thread! 💕
Wondering when the next clue/skein will be released?
In the next few day! 💕
