Hello, my lil’ sunbeam! This week, I have a lovely, lacy, crochet shawl pattern to share with you. It’s airy, light, and beginner friendly, and I have two stunning versions to show you. Keep reading to learn all of the details!

Fences was designed by Sharon Simpson. She says, “The idea of the Fences pattern came to me when I read a quote from George Addair who said, ‘Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear.’ Fear is like a fence; we wait on one side of the fence with our dreams and aspirations waiting on the other. We can peek through the lattice at the top of the fence and see those dreams, but still we stay behind the fence. This beautiful gradient, silk design has delicate, little fences in a row with lattice in between each row of fences. On either side is the top of the fence with the beautiful lacework and the trefoils as the fence spikes. When making and wearing this lovely scarf or shawl, dream your dreams, and climb those fences! Do not let fear keep you from your dreams!”

This pattern is an Adventurous Beginner level crochet pattern that is perfect for those who are ready to learn some new skills or stitch combinations. Skills include double crochet, trefoils, ch-3 loops, and blocking.

The samples shown here were crocheted with our luxurious Allure Fingering yarn, which is an elegant, 100% Mulberry Silk yarn with luscious drape, dreamy softness, and incredible color saturation! This 2-ply yarn has beautiful structure and is long-wearing. It’s a special delight when you’re ready to treat yourself to something sumptuous. Let’s be honest… who doesn’t love silk? I think there’s something so fancy feeling when you knit or crochet with pure silk! Allure Fingering has 200 m/218 yds per 50-gram skein.

Version 1 is shown in our Sienna Hues Allure Fingering Kit and used approximately 348 yds (318 m) total: Color A) 167 yds (153 m), Color B) 91 yds (83 m), and Color C) 90 yds (82 m).

Version 2 is shown in our Wandering Far Hues Allure Fingering Kit and used approximately 809 yds (740 m) total.

We made a video demonstrating how to make the trefoils featured in this pattern. Take a look!
