Hello, my lil’ honeybee! I hope you are having a wonderful week! Today, I want to tell you all about a new, crocheted cross-stitched shawl pattern. Keep reading to learn all about it.
Aurora was designed by Susanna Biaye. When asked about her debut design, Susanna said, “Aurora is a beautiful fade from dark to light inspired by the wonder and beauty of the Northern Lights splashed across a deep, midnight sky. This shawl is for the crocheter who is ready to go out in style! The design is elegant and fun to make. You can rest assured that when you style this shawl compliments will abound!”
This Intermediate level pattern is for those crocheters who feel comfortable with crocheting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include cross stitches, color changes, adding a single crochet edging (optional), and blocking.
Aurora is made with our Luster Sport yarn, which is a beautifully shimmering and soft, sport-weight yarn with a squish factor that is sure to please! Everyone who sees and feels this yarn base LOVES it. Luster Sport is a blend of 50% Superwash Merino Wool and 50% Lyocell with 395 yds/361 m per skein.
The sample is shown in our Blackberry Hues Luster Sport Kit: A) Navy, B) Black, C) Blackberry, D) Green, E) Taupe, and F) White. The sample shown used approximately 2360 yds/2158 m total.
Gauge is very important to this shawl, as the sample shown used nearly all the yarn from each skein.
Watch this video in which I show you how to make the crossed double crochet stitch featured in this pattern.
The pattern contains written instructions only.

I’m in central Illinois and we were told for a week that we could see the Northern Lights if you went out into the country (dead of winter). My husband and I bundled up, put a bunch of blankets in the truck… and headed out of town to find a good country road. Our hope was to wrap up in the blankets and watch the show. When we go out to a good country road… the northern sky was bogged down in clouds. 🙁 Where we were, we had witner-clear sky. We ended up watching the stars were we saw a couple of shooting stars… but no Northern Lights.
Oh my goodness…. This is absolutely gorgeous!!! I can’t wait to start working on this. Thank you so much for sharing this with us ❤️
Hi! I’m just getting started with this and am so excited! I do have a question though.
For Row 3, are there supposed to be a ch1 in between each xdc? Row 4 implies that there should be but the steps for row 2 don’t say to repeat from * and the video doesn’t show any ch1 in between the xdc. I appreciate the clarification.
Hi Susan, thank you for your question. I’m happy to help.
I looked at the pattern and you’re correct, Row 3 should read: “Ch 2, 2 dc in first st, *ch 1, xdc rep from * until the last st, ch 1, 2 dc in last st, turn. (16 dc)”
This should fix the ch 1 sp issues in Row 4. We’re updating the pattern as we speak and uploading a corrected version to the website.
BTW the video doesn’t include the ch 1 spaces since Chandi was only showing how to work the xdc stitch but not row 3 specifically.
Have a nice day! – Johanna 🥰
When working Row 5, I came up with 30 stitches when working into the 23 stitches from row 4. I havent gone any further since I don’t want to mess this up too much!
Row 5: Ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next 4 sts, *2
dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts, rep from * until
the last 2 sts, dc in the last 2 sts, turn. (28 dc)
Or I could be having senior moments when reading your pattern!
Hi Rebecca, thank you for your message. I checked the pattern and everything should work out. You should get 28 sts after finishing row 5. I just want to make sure, you checked that you have 23 sts after working row 4, correct? Also you are using the most updated version of the pattern? We had a small fix for row 3 a few days ago. If f that’s all the case, I’m not sure where the issue is coming from. Why don’t you send us a message through the contact form at https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/contact-us/ and we’ll try our best to help more. Have a nice day! – Johanna 💕
Hello,
I started working on this Aurora shawl some time ago. However, upon working into row 34, I’m coming out with the same count of 248 as in row 33. I’ve counted and recounted multiple times and I don’t understand what’s wrong. I’ve checked the few previous rows and the count is correct. I need a bit of understanding.
For clarity:
Row 33: Ch 2, 3 dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts,
*ch 1, sk next ch 1 sp, xdc over the next 2 sts,
rep from * until the last 3 sts, ch 1, sk next ch
sp, dc in next 2 sts, 3 dc in last st, turn. (248 dc)
Row 34: Ch 2, 3 dc in first st, sk next st, ch 1,
xdc over next 2 sts, sk next st, *ch 1, sk next ch
1 sp, xdc over the next 2 sts, rep from * until
the last 5 sts, ch 1, sk next ch sp and next st,
xdc over next 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, 3 dc in last
st, turn. (252 dc) => However, again, as mentioned above, my stitch count for this row comes out to 248. So I’m not sure if it’s a pattern error or what.
Hi Nya-Lin, thank you for reaching out. We’ve received the same issue report from another customer a few weeks back and I’ve reached out to designer, that hasn’t gotten back to me about it yet. As far as I can tell, you’re correct and the stitch count is off (no increases in that row and all subsequent rows which are row 34 repeats).
I think you can continue to work on the Aurora pattern since the instructions are correct but keep in mind that the stitch count is off starting with row 34. I will email the designer again and if we don’t hear back I’ll make the adjustments in the pattern myself. Please, let me know if you have any further questions.
Have a nice day! – Johanna 🩵
