Hello, my lil’ gumdrop! Today, I have two special treats to share with you. First, I have a lacy, crochet poncho pattern with a beautiful backstory to tell you about, so keep reading to find out more about today’s pattern and learn about my second treat!
Mou Leipeis was designed by Patricia Liefeld. When asked about this design, Patricia said, “In Greek, you don’t really say ‘I miss you.’ You say ‘Mou Leipeis’ (Mu Lee-pees), which means, ‘You are missing from me.’ I heard this phrase at my sister-in-law Lori’s celebration of life. Lori and my brother had a special love story. They met and married as teenagers, divorced a few years later, reunited, and remarried 30 years later.
Throughout those missing 30 years, I stayed in touch with Lori. She loved all the knitted and crocheted items I made and was often a recipient of them. She liked the technical aspect of how items were created and often asked questions on how I made my items, as she did with this poncho.
She had been fighting cancer for several years, and one day I was visiting with her, working on the poncho. As usual, she started asking all her questions, and I happily answered. After a while, she said, ‘Thank you.’ I was confused and asked her what she was thanking me for. She said for always being willing to answer all her questions and not make her feel dumb for not knowing. I told her that it is me who should be giving thanks. Thanks for taking such an interest in my hobby. Thanks for letting me share my excitement when I find that perfect yarn or pattern. Thank you for being in our lives and making them better and being the best partner to my brother. Mou Leipeis, Lori. This pattern is for you.”
This Intermediate level pattern is for those crocheters who feel comfortable with crocheting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include garment blocking, seaming, and special stitches.
For my second treat, Mou Leipeis is made with our brand new Nublado DK yarn, which is an interesting and beautiful DK weight yarn. In Spanish, Nublado means ‘cloudy.’ This super unique, Limited Edition yarn base has a frothy, heathered appearance due to the Merino wool being whipped around and throughout the undyed cotton core, which creates a subtle, tufted halo. This yarn is a blend of 80% Pima cotton and 20% Merino wool with 273 yds/250 m per 3.5 oz/100 g skein.
Mou Leipeis is offered in three sizes: S/M, L/XL, and 2XL/3XL. Sizes are based on bust size, and the poncho is constructed by seaming two rectangles together and adding an optional collar.
The sample shown here was made with color Noche Nublado DK and is a size S/M, modeled on a 34” (86 cm) bust. The sample used approximately 1,040 yds/951 m total. Depending on your size, you will need 4 (5, 5) skeins to make the poncho without the collar or 4 (5, 6) skeins to make the poncho with the collar.
Be sure to order all you need for your project because once this Limited Edition yarn is gone, it is gone!
We filmed a video tutorial showing you how to work the first few rows of this poncho. Take a look!
The pattern contains written instructions, as well as a seaming schematic.

What a beautiful design, and the yarn base is perfect to highlight the stitch definition, especially the cables. Added it to my to-do list of projects. As always, thank you EFA for always providing exquisite patterns to be worked up in your delightfully squishy yarn.
Hello. made two panels of Lou Leipeis. Beautiful pattern and yarn. used Nublado. some of the instructions were confusing. I used the 4mm hook because it was “to guage ” even though the instructions said to use the larger needle. as it turned out, the L/XL dimensions are now the S/M size. still fits bc I am between the two sizes, but not as drappy as It should be.
Now I am confused with attaching the collar. Is there a video on that?
Hi May, I’m sorry you’re having trouble with the sizing and instructions of our Mou Leipeis pattern. Unfortunately, we don’t have another video for this design. I’ll do my best to explain.
Place your markers M1 and M2 as described int he pattern at the seam (M1) and 5 stitches left of the seam (M2). Now turn the poncho inside out. M1 will still be at the seam and M2 will be 5 stitches to the right of the seam.
Take the collar with the RS facing you and align the right bottom corner of it with M2, that’s where you start slip stitching both pieces together through the back loop. Then continue with the pattern instructions.
I hope this answers your question. Please let me know if you have further questions. Have a nice day! – Johanna 💕
