Hello, my sweet sunbeam! This week, I have a special treat to share with you. It is a sunset inspired crochet shawl called Sunset Diamonds, and I hope you’ll read on to learn all about it.
Sunset Diamonds was designed by Wardah Mhd. When asked about this design, Wardah said, “The idea of the Sunset Diamonds shawl glowed up in my mind while I was on the beach. I was relaxing after a long day while the sun set into the sea. Soft droplets of rain touched my face to open up my eyes. Each rain droplet was reflecting the sunlight while descending towards me all the way from the infinite sky, just before my eyes. That scene, full of sparkles, brought to my mind an abundance of diamonds sparkling one after the other to form a picture of light confined by geometrical shapes. I was determined to paint this picture with my hook and yarns.”
“In several rows of this pattern, I used groups of shell stitches to form a quite rhythmic sequence of rhombus shapes. I also left a couple of short breaks as transitions to allow the diamonds to have their distinctive display. This shawl always brings me back to the relaxation and beauty I felt on that rainy beach day.”
This Adventurous Beginner to Intermediate level pattern is for those crocheters who are ready to learn some new skills or stitch combinations, and stitches include foundation single crochet, stacked single crochet, shell stitches, cluster, lacework, and picot.
Our Alpaca Silk Lace yarn is perfect for this shawl. This yarn is a heavenly, dreamy blend of 50% Baby Alpaca and 50% Mulberry Silk. It is warm and soft with a gorgeous drape and a shimmery glow. Hand-dyed in radiant, dazzling shades and wonderful for cozy wraps, soft sweaters, and treasured accessories. 604 yds/552 m each skein.

Yes I have crocheted a shawl. Using much heavier yarn.
I haven’t crocheted a shawl yet, but I’m familiar (and really, really love) this yarn which I have used when knitting. Off I go to practice!!!!
I want to do this in one color. Should I work with 2 strands or can I crochet with just one strand? If I can use just one strand, do you know how much yarn I would need?
I have crocheted several shawls. (I also did the Mcal 2022. Love my blanket.)
Hi Joy, unfortunately, I can’t give you an estimate for that since your gauge will be very different with only one strand. I’d suggest to just stick to two strands to make it less of a guessing game.
I’m sorry, I don’t have a better answer. Have a great weekend! – Johanna
No! I have not crocheted a shawl before, but you make it looks so easy! And, this pattern is so beautiful, so I am definitely going to give this a try and participate in the KAL! Thank you for the great video tutorial(s).
i have never made anything more than beanie or scarfs
I have made many Expression Fiber Arts shawls and love them all! I will be joining the CAL to make this one and can’t wait!
Fabulous! I hope you’ll enjoy it.
I’ve tried a shawl before but I was so off on the stitch count!!! It sits in the closet. Yet with this gorgeous pattern and the tutorial, which truly makes this look possible, I’m going to try…that’s how we get better, right?!
I think this is my 6th EFA shawl/ wrap pattern I am tackling…. i have made a bunch of shawls since covid hit and I got back into crochet.
I started making shawls as a beginner to crochet. They make lovely companions to practically anything in my closet.
Do you have a video for the picot edging?
Hi Cary, yes we do. Find a video for a crocheted picot edging here: https://youtu.be/9LcRdBtidsE
I hope this answers your questions. – Johanna
Hello
I am starting this beautiful shawl tomorrow and was wondering, in the video only one strand is used and I believe a bigger crochet than 2mm or 2.75mm. Could you kindly advise? Thank you
Hi Mylaine, thank you for your message. We usually use thicker yarn and hooks in our tutorials since that’s easier to see on video. For your project please go with the recommended hook and make a gauge swatch using the yarn held double to make sure you’re on gauge.
I hope this makes sense and explains it. Have a great week. – Johanna
Hi, I am quite confused about preblocking and blocking, how does that work? When do I use preblocking? Do I use both?
Thank you so much
Hi Linda,
Thank you for your message. I’m happy to help.
This info is given as a guideline so you know how much the piece is stretched during blocking. It also helps keeping track while you’re working on the shawl to know if you’re still on gauge.
I’d make a swatch, measure it before blocking, and compare it with the pre-blocked numbers. Then block it and do the same with the post -block numbers. Your pre-block gauge does not have to match but your post-block gauge should. Again the pre-blocking gauge is just for reference.
I hope this makes sense and is helpful.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
Have a nice day! – Johanna
I am working this beautiful pattern and I’m stuck at row 18 where I need to drop 1 of the 2 strands and join in the next color to softly transition colors The first stitch in the row I am working is a stacked single crochet. Does anyone know of a tutorial video on how to do this? Thank you!
I’m working this pattern and have a question about rows 19 & 20. So at the end of row 18 there is a 2 dc increase and in row 19 it says to do a ssc and a dc in the same stitch and then dc into the next 76 stitches but with the increase from row 18 there are actually 77 stitches which is throwing me off. Can you please explain what I’m doing wrong? It’s the same for row 20. Thank you!
Hi Brandy, thanks for pointing this out. I have trouble reproducing the numbers also, so please give me a bit of time to figure it out. I’ll be in touch once I know.
Thanks,
Johanna
Hi brandy, thank you for your patience.
I went through the pattern again and everything is correct. Let me explain. After row 18 you will have 156 dc and 1 V sts. This results to 77 sts on each side (76 dc and 1 dc from the V st). Following in Row 19 you will work 2 dc in the first st (=ssc and 1 dc; 76 sts are left) and then 76 dc until you reach the ch-2 sp. You will have the same on the left side of the ch-2 sp. Same is true for Row 20.
I hope this makes sense and explains it.
Have a nice day! – Johanna
