Hello, my sparkling dewdrop! Our knit pattern this week is a beautifully feminine, embroidered sweater pattern. I do hope you’ll read on to learn more!
Malvarosa was designed by Candy Key. When asked about her sweater, Candy said, “Malvarosa is the Italian word for hollyhock. Hollyhocks are popular, ornamental garden plants. During the Victorian era, the hollyhock symbolized both ambition and fecundity in the language of flowers. One of the meanings of the word fecundity is the ability to produce many new ideas. That is the reason why Malvarosa is the perfect name for this sweater.”
“The sweater is a knitted, cropped sweater with gorgeous, puffy, bishop sleeves. The knitter picks the color, whether to add embroidery, the colors of embroidery thread, and how much or how little embroidery is desired. You will love your sweater. Enjoy creating your ideas!”
Malvarosa is made with our Dewy DK yarn. This yarn is sumptuous, ultra-soft, and squishy. It has a hint of “dewy” glow from the silk and strength and longevity from the nylon. It is a blend of 70% Superwash Merino Wool, 20% Nylon, and 10% Silk.
The sizes are based on actual bust measurements, and the sweater is offered in sizes A-H (XS-4XL). Malvarosa is designed to be worn with 2” of ease.
You will need 5-7 skeins of Dewy DK based on your selected size. If you decide to add additional rounds, you will need additional yarn.
The sample shown is a size B (Small), and it is shown on a 34” bust with 2” of positive ease. It was made with Pink Pearl Dewy DK.
This Intermediate to Advanced level pattern is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include garment construction, German Short Rows, and intermediate embroidery skills, if you plan to add embroidery.
We filmed a video tutorial for you showing you how to embroider your sweater. Have a look:

Can I use fingering yarn for ripple scarf???
Hi Paula, thank you for your message. I’m happy to help.
I’m not a 100% sure I know which scarf you’re referring to. If it’s our crocheted Sierra Scarf (https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/products/sierra.html), then yes, you can make it with fingering weight but I’d do some adjustments.
First, I’d cast on more stitches as instructed to reach the same width as the original sample. You might want to make a swatch to see how many more you will need. Based on that swatch you will also know how many more rows you will need to crochet to get the same scarf length. The yardage necessary will also be different (more) so you will need to make sure you have enough yarn.
I hope this makes sense and was helpful. Please let me know if anything is unclear or you have further questions.
Have a wonderful weekend! Johanna 💕
I love the Malvarosa and I am knitting now. ( my first top down sweater) How do I know which is the front of the sweater? I am doing size B.
Hi Jo,
Thank you for your question. I’m happy to help. The beginning of the round (BOR) is at the back of the sweater and will stay in this place throughout the entire sweater. So that should help finding front and back. Also your short rows will also be in the back, in case the markers falls out.
Hope this helps! – Johanna 💕
Thank you sooooo much. It is coming along nicely. I have not decided whether I am going to embroider or not. We will see.
Thank you again.
My name is also Johanna (go by Jo).
What a nice coincidence, I’m glad I was helpful!
Have a lovely week! – Johanna ❤️
Hello;
I am working on this sweater right now. I am doing size D. However, for round 5, it says to k1 p1 until the last two stitches, then k2tog. Then the pattern indicates my stitch count should match what is in the table on page 9. However, the stitch count already matches what is in the stitch table. Should I go by the stitch count indicated in the Millefiori pattern instead?
Thank you,
Summer
Hi Summer, thank you for reaching out. You are correct, the stitch counts in the table on page 9 are not correct. Or let’s put it this way they are correct for the CO but there is a row missing in the chart which will give you the adjusted stitch count after the k2tog. The stitch count after the decrease should read 110 (115, 120, 125)(140, 145, 155) 165. The instructions on page 5 are correct however. So please proceed with you Malvarosa sweater.
I hope this answers your question. We will upload an updated version of the pattern onto the website shortly. It will include the missing row in the chart with the correct stitch count after the ribbing.
Have a great weekend! – Johanna 💕
Hello;
thank you! That does answer my question, and thank you for being so fast with the reply!! I hope you have a restful weekend.
Hi, I just downloaded this pattern, and received Restore DK yarn in Initiative to knit it. I wonder if you could tell me how much of each color of floss you used for the flowers. I’m a much more experienced knitter than embroiderer.
Thanks!
Kathy
Hi Kathy, thank you for your message. Unfortunately, I don’t have any details on that either, I will however reach out to the designer and get back to you once Candy Kay gets in touch. Have a nice day! – Johanna 💕
So Candy got back to me. She said a skein of embroidery floss (https://www.dmc.com/US/en/products/mouline-stranded-thread) in each color should be more than enough! I hope this helps.
Have a great week! – Johanna
Hi, Johanna, Than you (and Candy) for getting back to me so quickly!
