Hello, my cherished fiber friend! I want to share with you a relaxing, knitted poncho called Lacewing. Read on to learn more about this beauty!
Lacewing was designed for us by Afifa Sayeed. When asked about their debut design, Afifa said, “Inspired by the long, delicately veined Green Lacewing, this flowy design is the perfect layering piece for warmer or transitional weather.”
“Throw it on with your favorite shorts, jeans, or skirt to add a romantic flair to any outfit. It uses simple, repeating rows and a fun, clever construction!”
This Intermediate level pattern is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include cable cast on, lace stitches, simple garment construction, and a k2togtbl bind off.
Lacewing uses our Mirage Sport yarn. It is a beautiful sport weight yarn that’s luscious and supremely soft with a gorgeous drape, amazing structure, and a subtle gleam! It is made with 70% Superwash Merino Wool, 10% Natural Baby Camel, 10% Cashmere, and 10% Mulberry Silk.
The sample poncho was made with our Wanderlust Hues. However, you can knit this poncho with any colors or any sport weight yarn that you desire.
This poncho is offered in four sizes: 1 (2, 3, 4): 37 (46, 56, 65)” / 94 (117, 142, 165) cm chest circumference.
Size 1 – 270 yards each of 3 colors (810 yds), Size 2 – 330 yards each of 3 colors (990 yds), Size 3 – 400 yards each of 3 colors (1200 yds), Size 4 – 470 yards each of 3 colors (1410 yds).
Sizes 1 and 2 can be made with one kit, but sizes 3 and 4 will require additional yarn.
The sample shown is a Size 1, and it is shown on a 34″ bust with 3″ of positive ease.

I love this design, and look forward to making it. What if started with rib and increased to the prescribed circumference and made puffy sleeves instead of wide tubes? Do you think that would work?
Hi Tessie, thank you for your question. I think that should work and will look amazing. Looking forward to seeing some pictures when it’s finished. 💕
Where can I find how to make the mockup for lacewing?
Hi Mary-Frances, you can find the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDd708lXnlM&t=1s
I hope it is helpful. Have a lovely day! 💕
I would like to make this so it falls lower on the body… hip level versus waist. Is it possible to adapt it to do that or would it make the sleeve section too long?
Hello. I purchased this pattern and would like to make it as a scarf, similar to what Chandi showed in the video tutorial. Can you recommend an appropriate number to cast on, or the multiplier to use to change the width?
You’ll need to modify the pattern significantly to turn this into a scarf – not only going from knitting in the round to flat, but also changing your CO number and converting stitches written for the round to flat. The easiest approach is to start with the Separate for Body Opening Section. Use Row 1 of that section as a guide to adjust your width: k6, *[(yo, k2tog) x 4, k3]; rep from * to 3 sts before 2nd m, k3, sm; rep from beg of row to last 3 sts, sl3wyif. Using this information, you should be okay if you cast on any multiple of 11 + 9 (11 sts in the repeating portion, and 9 sts (6+3) for the border.
Thanks so much! Appreciate your help.
Hi, I love this poncho!!! I purchased the pattern and can you believe that right off the bat i am having a problem. Maybe it’s s me and i’m not seeing it but here goes.
Please keep in mind that i have been crocheting for 40 years and just learned to knit 3 years ago so i still don’t know very much. I followed the written instructions to cast on 128 sts. Then placed the second marker at 64 sts. However here is my problem the stitches don’t even out to 64. I don’t want to sound stupid but i truly don’t know what i am doing wrong. I keep counting and it just doesn’t happen lol Can you please guide me. Thank you
Hi Luisa, thank you for your message. I’ll try my best to help!
Do I understand correctly that your issue is in Round 1 after placing the markers? Meaning the stitches indicated do not add up to 64 for you?
If so, I double checked the pattern and Round 1 is correct and should add up to 64. Your issue might be the repeat in the brackets and parenthesis.
I’ll try to make it clear. The pattern reads:
k6, *[(yo, k2tog) x 4, k3]; rep from * to 3 sts before 2nd m, k3, sm; rep from BOR.
First you will knit 6 and then the repeat starts. “For the repeat you will *yarn over, then knit 2 together* and repeat the instruction between the asterisks another 3 times, then you will knit 3. Following you will repeat everything in the quotes until you have 3 stitches left before the marker which you will knit and then slip the marker.
Subsequently, you will repeat the instructions from the beginning of this round meaning, start with k6 and then work the repeat in the quotes again until 3 stitches remain and knit those 3 stitches.
I hope this makes sense and isn’t even more confusing.
Please, let me know if that solved your issue or if that wasn’t the problem.
Have a nice day! 💕

I purchased this pattern but am having a problem with the stitches are not adding up. Im not sure what im doing wrong. I am fairly new to knitting but like to challenge myself. I have done things that are more complicated and am working on the Laiken Shawl and it is coming out beautifully. I could use a bit of guidance with this new one. Please
Feel free to send us an email at https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/contact-us/ and we will try to help. You can also contact the designer directly, as well. If you can provide more information about which rows/rounds your stitch count seems to get off, that will help us, too!
Hi there, what a beautiful pattern. I just started and I am now on color three of the first sleeve. I don’t seem to be having any problem with counting as the pattern is fairly easy, but I am fretting the idea of dividing or separating the garment. I literally am having nightmares. So when I finish the second round of all of my color way., And I am up to the shoulders, do I literally start knitting as I would a flat garment to the mid marker at 64 and then turn my knitting back-and-forth as though I was knitting flat? I am working with the Parisian blue kit, and man is it beautiful!
Hi Cynthia,
glad you enjoy Lacewing so much. Yes, you’re correct, you will start knitting flat once you reach that point in the pattern. There is no need to dread it. Slide the stitches that will be on hold on waste yarn or a separate needles with stoppers and just knit the stitches that are still on your needles until the pattern tells you to stop. Now these stitches will be put on hold by transferring them on waste yarn or a separate needle. Pick up the stitches that were previously on hold and slide them onto the working needle. Work the pattern as instructed. Once both “flat pieces” are done you will join both pieces in the round again.
I hope this helps and takes away the fear a bit.
Let us know if you have further questions or i doesn’t work out after all. We’re happy to help. Just reach out here or via the contact form at https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/contact-us/
Enjoy your day! – Johanna 💕
I am loving this pattern. After working the first sleeve on page one
Am I correct that you go from the first sleeve to separate for body opening on page one of the pattern. Fairly new to knitting somehow that doesn’t sound right. Thanks Marilyn
HI Marilyn,
Thank you for your message. Yes, that’s correct. The Lacewing Poncho is worked sideways from one sleeve over the body to the second sleeve. I hope this makes sense. Please let me know if you have any further questions.
Have a lovely weekend. – Johanna 💙
I just got this pattern to knit up for my granddaughter in college. She likes dark colors or black and white. What would you recommend for yarn?
Hi Sue, thank you for your message. The pattern is written for our Mirage Sport base and uses 3 colors. If you’d like to use that base I’d suggest looking into the kits we offer here: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/categories/kits/mirage-sport.html
Maybe one of these will meet her color preferences. Otherwise you can always make up your own “kit” by choosing 3 skeins with appropriate colors from the single skeins here: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/categories/sport/mirage-sport.html
I hope this is helpful. Please, let me know if you have further questions. Have a lovely Sunday! – Johanna 💕
This pattern was the most fun that I ever had making some thing. Thank you so much for this pattern and I have gotten so many compliments and I’ve only worn it twice so thank you again.
