Hello, my lovely pearl! This week, I want to share with you a beginner level knitted shawl called Gradient Sea. It is a design that is chock full of memories! Read on to learn more about this pattern!
Gradient Sea was designed by me, Chandi Agee. Originally, this was a pattern that we initially offered as a scarf, but with help from Maureen Hart, we turned the scarf pattern into the beautiful shawl pattern you see here.
This shawl brings back fond memories of a wonderful fishing trip. My little girl nose crinkled at the fishy smell of the docks. My dad and I were about to head out on the boat for a day on the water. We lived in Juneau, Alaska, and the sky, as usual, was overcast – a dull, insistent, mottled grey.Â
We slowly puttered out to the open water, picking up speed and bop, bop, bopping on the waves until we finally stopped to drop our fishing poles into the sea. The churning, endless, powerful depths of the ocean… the air was clear and crisp and laden with the scent of seaweed and salt.Â
The day ended with the most delicious cod cooked in butter right there on our tiny boat. Thanks, Dad, for a wonderful day that I’ll always treasure! This pattern embodies the colors of that day. It’s a perfect, cozy shawl or scarf. Wrap it around your neck on chilly days, or just wear it as a fashion statement. Easy. Comfy. Sea-like.
This Beginner level pattern is perfect for those who are just beginning or have knit a project or two. Stitches and techniques include knit and purl stitches, color changes, and optional chart reading.Â
This pattern uses our earthy and homey Twisted Tweed yarn. This unique yarn includes two types of wool that are twisted together. Because they take the dye differently, the result is a cool, barber pole effect! And gold, plum, and brown Donegal Tweed neps are flecked throughout. It is made with 43% Superwash Merino Wool, 42% Fine Merino Wool, and 15% Donegal.
The sample shawl was made with our Nougat, Sea Grey, and Sea Blue colors. Our sample sample used 1080 yards (988 m) total: Color A: 360 yds (330 m), Color B: 360 yds (330 m), and Color C: 360 yds (330 m). The pattern is easily adaptable, but may require additional yardage.
We filmed a video tutorial for you showing you how to knit the main portions of this shawl. Take a look:
The pattern includes both written and optional charted instructions.

Absolutely beautiful. Thank you.
I’m not sure how many times to repeat the pattern befor I introduce the new colour
Do you still need help with this? I am almost finished.
Hi Patty, I’m very sorry I missed your question. You will work 6 repeats of the Body Rows 1-16 in color A then Transitions T1-T16 once with A & B. Following you will work 6 repeats of the Body Rows 1-16 in color B, followed by Transition T1-T16 with B & C. Finally you will work 6 repeats of Body Rows 1-16 in color C. I hope this makes sense and helps you continue.
Have a wonderful weekend. 💕
