Hello, my beautiful blossom! I want to share with you a fun and versatile, knitted shawl pattern called Lampy. This shawl was designed by Janica York Carter, and it uses our Luster Sport yarn. Read on to learn more!
Janica says, “Sir Charles Edmund Isham (1819–1903) was an eccentric spiritualist who owned Lamport Hall in Northamptonshire, England. In the 1840s, Isham began a garden rockery after a holiday in Germany where he saw miners carrying small figurines as good luck talismans into the mines. He purchased 21 terracotta gnomes, purportedly manufactured by Philip Griebel, and placed them throughout the Lamport Hall gardens.”
“Isham seemed to believe in fairies and gnomes, as did many during the Romantic Movement, and Isham was convinced they came alive at night. His daughters were less enchanted and had all the gnomes removed upon Isham’s death. (Legend says they shot the gnomes themselves with air rifles.) But one little fellow nicknamed “Lampy” survived; he had fallen into a crevice and wasn’t rediscovered until the late 1940s. Lampy, the oldest known garden gnome, is on display at Lamport Hall and is estimated to be worth £2 million. The elongated wedges of this shawl are reminiscent of iconic gnome hats and are whimsically interspersed with stripes of sprinkles in colors often found in rock gardens.”
In addition to wearing Lampy as a traditional shawl, you can style it off-shoulder or even wear it as a skirt.
This Adventurous Beginner pattern is for those knitters who are ready to learn some new skills or stitch combinations. Stitches include short rows with wrap and turn and slipped stitches.
Lampy uses our Luster Sport yarn. This is a delightfully soft and beautifully shimmering yarn, and it is made up of 50% Superwash Merino Wool and 50% Lyocell.
The sample shown used approximately 990 yds (Color A blue: 308 yds, Color B rose: 227 yds, Color C green: 228 yds, and Color D brown: 227 yds) / 905 m [(Color A blue: 282 m, Color B rose: 208 m, Color C green: 209 m, and Color D brown: 208 m)] and is shown in our Gnome Hues Kit. However, you can make this shawl with any four colors that you desire.

Yeah, bloopers are back. You guys are so funny and always make me laugh so much. Thanks for the beautiful and fantastic multi purpose pattern 😍
I ordered the Parisian Blue Hues for the Lampy pattern, making it for someone else….what would be the best order of these colors?
I’d probably just use them lightest to darkest or vice versa.
