Hello, my little dewdrop! As promised, here is the crochet sister shrug pattern to last week’s knit version. Read on to learn more about it!
Glacadh was designed by Janica York Carter. She says, “Glacadh (GLAH-kuh) is an Irish word for embrace. This quick-to-stitch shrug hugs your shoulders and wraps your arms in snuggly softness. Worked from side to side, you start by working a ribbed cuff in the round, increasing stitches as you progress up the sleeve. Then you switch to working flat in rows, adding some stripes as you change colors. Once you reach the center back, you do it all again in reverse! Use herringbone double crochet stitch to match the texture shown in the sample. If you prefer, you can substitute traditional double crochet stitches. This shrug is offered in three sizes (XS–M, L–2XL, 3XL–5XL) so that you can choose a wingspan that fits best.”
Glacadh is an Adventurous Beginner level pattern and is for those crocheters who are ready to create a simple garment. Skills/concepts include the option of learning foundation single crochet, front post stitches, herringbone double crochet, and working in the round.
The updated version of Glacadh, as well as the original version, were made with our Limited Edition North DK yarn, which is a soft, gentle, flexible yarn that feels amazing on your skin and has a lovely bounce! North DK is a blend of 66% Extra Fine Merino Wool and 34% Pima Cotton with 264 yds/241 m per skein.
North DK is a Limited Edition yarn, so be sure to order enough for your project because once this year’s colors are gone, they’re gone for good!
This shrug is offered in three sizes (XS–M, L–2XL, 3XL–5XL), so you can choose a wingspan that fits you best.
The updated version of Glacadh was made with three colors of North DK and is shown here in colors: A) Snow Cover, B) Frost Flowers, and C) Smell of Pine North DK.
The updated version requires two skeins each of colors A–C for all sizes.
The original version used one skein each of discontinued colors: A) Fireside, B) Hibernation, C) Bough, D) Wintering, E) Ice House, and F) Enchanting North DK.
If you want to make the original version in similar colors, please use the Misty Hues Dewy DK Kit.
This pattern includes written instructions only and comes with a video tutorial showing how to work the four special stitches you’ll use in this pattern. Take a look!

So excited to work on this pattern I pulled out my Coboo yarn to work one up til my North DK arrives! Love the versatility of changing colors to suit the person wearing it. Love that I get to use lots of colors! Pattern working up great so far! Have a fantastic fiber day! Super cold out so snuggled up with my yarn and pattern.
Hi! What size yarn would I use for this? I see it’s a 5 mm hook, but not what size yarn! Thanks
This pattern is written for a DK weight yarn.
I was soo exited to find this tutorial on YouTube. Now I am here because I was hoping to get the written pattern but I cant find it. 🙁 Could kindly some one direct me to it?

Ok thank you!
I’ve started the Glacadh project and was wondering why I can’t just go ahead and fasten off the old color when starting a new color and then crocheting the old color in?
You can if you’d like, but I believe Janica included the instructions to not fasten off the MC because you’re going to crochet with the MC again just a few rows later. If you don’t fasten the MC off in Round 25, for example, you’ll just carry the yarn in Rows 1 and 2 before using it again in Rows 3 and 4.
I understand that but then you would have to cut them all later, right?
In this instance, you’ll cut the MC two rows later at the end of Row 4 after you carry it for the two rows.
How do I get rge shrug crochet pattern please?
You can find the pattern at https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/products/glacadh.html
I’m still somewhat new to
Crocheting clothes. When I am making this shrug into a plus size, I know the wing spans are different but do I measure the shrug as I go along and just keep adding rows to make it larger? I was a little confused.
Hi Angela,
thank you for your comment. I’m happy to help!
I just want to make sure I’m understanding you correctly. So you’re planning on making it even longer than the 3rd size (3XL-5XL), correct?
If so yes, that’s the way to get an even wider wingspan. To be able to make an estimate for the final dimensions measure the length from cuff to the point where you started to work in rows only. Add this number to the measurement of your current WiP and this will give you an estimate of the total wingspan. Please remember that you will also block the shrug so this will possibly add a 1-2 inches.
I hope this makes sense. Please, let me know if you have further questions. You can always reach out via the contact form also https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/contact-us/.
Happy Holidays! 💕 – Johanna
Will the yarns become available again?
We may bring North DK back sometime in the future, but probably not the same colors from previous years, which is why we created the Misty Hues Dewy DK kit: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/products/misty-hues-dewy-dk-kit.html
If you’re interested in us making this kit available to order, just send us an email at https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/contact-us/
Suggestion. For the free patterns why can’t you have a webpage with the pattern there for us to view and work by? The way it’s set up now seems difficult for those of us just joining – or not that comfortable downloading files- we are checking out but not really? A written out form to print out would be great right from your site – then we don’t have to worry about viruses coming in on the file. Please consider ❣️
Hi, I ordered this pattern earlier today. I am waiting for it to appear in my email. It has bee several hours and have not received it. I wish you could just send a written pattern. I have always had trouble downloading this kind of thing.
I’m very sorry you didn’t receive the pattern. If you’ll send us a message using our contact form link at https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/contact-us/ we can help you out and send the pattern to your email address directly. Please feel free to reach out to us there anytime you need help with anything. Have a wonderful day!
