Hello, my boos! Our knit pattern for you this week is our Arden scarf, designed by Anne Robinson, and we hope you’ll love making it! Read on to find out more about it and how to add beads to your knitting! (It’s so easy.)
Arden is a beaded lace scarf with a deep seed stitch border. I was inspired by the gorgeous hue “Pine” in EFA’s Oasis Fingering yarn. The rich green color combined with a leafy lace pattern reminded me of the Forest of Arden in Shakespeare’s As You Like It. The added beads, suggested by EFA’s team member, Pam, add a beautiful accent to the lace pattern and bring out the luster of the silk in the yarn.
This scarf is made with our Oasis Camel Silk Fingering yarn. This yarn is a 50/50 blend of camel and mulberry silk. The yarn colors are incredibly rich and this yarn is really soft to the touch!
The sample shown is made with the color Pine and used 575 yards total.
This scarf’s length and width are both easily adjustable but may require additional yardage and size #8 seed beads.
This Intermediate level pattern includes written instructions, lace chart, and instructions for adjusting the scarf. Turn it into a shawl if you like!
We’ve filmed a video tutorial for you showing you how to knit and bead the lace portion of the pattern. Have a look:

What is the cast on number for Arden?
64 stitches. 🙂
I’ve added 11 additional stitches in order to make a wider scarf. However, the instructions for the seed stitch border at the beginning and end are now incorrect. Since there are now an odd number of stitches, both rows begin and end with knit stitches. I think there may also need to be a correction to the side borders so that they track.
Carol, we would love to help! Please write us here: https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/contact-us/ for pattern support. Thanks!
I CO 64 stitches and knitted the 28 rows of seed stitch border. The first pattern row requires more than 64 stitches, as written. What am I doing wrong? Other pattern rows seem off, too.
Thanks for any help
Row 1 (RS): (K1,p1)7 times, k1, PM, k2tog, *K4, AB, yo, k1, yo, k2, sl1, k2tog, psso; rep from * 2 times, k4, AB, yo, k2, yo, k2, ssk, PM, (p1,k1) 7 times, P1. (64 stitches)
I’m having the same issue, I’d like to hear the reply.

I am happy to help. I have written out the first few lace pattern rows. To start with, you’ll cast on 75 sts (64+ 11 for the extra repeat). Then you’ll work the 28 rows of seed stitch before starting the Leafy Lace section of the pattern. You can always add additional st markers for each of the lace sections to help you keep count if you like.
Row 1 (RS): [K1, p1] 7 times, k1, PM, k2tog, k4, AB, yo, k1, yo, k2, sl1, k2tog, psso, k4, AB, yo, k1, yo, k2, sl1, k2tog, psso, k4, AB, yo, k1, yo, k2, sl1, k2tog, psso, k4, AB, yo, k1, yo, k2, ssk, PM, [p1, k1] 7 times, P1. [75 sts]
The number of sts on your needles after completing Row 1 looks like this: 15 sts, PM, 12 sts, 11 sts, 11 sts, 11 sts, PM, 15 sts. (75 sts total)
Row 2 and All (WS) Rows: [P1, k1] 7 times, p1, SM (continue slipping all markers as you come to them), p45, SM, [k1, p1] 7 times, k1.
The number of sts on your needles after completing Row 2 looks like this: 15 sts, SM, 45 sts, SM, 15 sts. (75 sts total)
Row 3: [K1, p1] 7 times, k1, SM, k2tog, k4, yo, k3, yo, AB, sl1, k2tog, psso, k4, yo, k3, yo, AB, sl1, k2tog, psso, k4, yo, k3, yo, AB, sl1, k2tog, psso, k4, yo, k3, yo, AB, ssk, SM [p1, k1] 7 times, P1. [75 sts]
The number of sts on your needles after completing Row 3 looks like this: 15 sts, SM, 12 sts, 11 sts, 11 sts, 11 sts, SM, 15 sts. (75 sts total)
I’m having the same issue. When knitting the pattern as written (no extra repeat), the row requires 75 stitches. I believe this is an error in the pattern, it needs to have a CO of 75, not 64.
Hi Kathy,
I’ve double checked the numbers and the CO of 64 is correct if you don’t want to have an extra repeat.
For Row 1 you’ll work: Row 1 (RS): [K1, p1] 7 times, k1, PM, k2tog, k4, AB, yo, k1, yo, k2, sl1, k2tog, psso, k4, AB, yo, k1, yo, k2, sl1, k2tog, psso, k4, AB, yo, k1, yo, k2, ssk, PM, [p1, k1] 7 times, P1. [64 sts]
The number of sts on your needles after completing Row 1 should be this: 15 sts, PM, 12 sts, 11 sts, 11 sts, PM, 15 sts. (64 sts total)
Does that make sense. Please let me know if you have further question or the issue is related to another row of the pattern. I’m happy to elaborate more.
Have a nice day! – Johanna 🧡
