Hello, my wonderful fiber friend!
Our knitting pattern for you this week is the beautiful and elegant Montagne Shawl!
Montagne, inspired by the French word for mountain, is a beautiful Intermediate level knitting pattern designed by Emma Butram. It features several lace motifs that will take you on a knitting journey from the forest to the tops of the snow capped mountains.
Emma says:
“Winter brings images of snow, evergreen trees and glorious mountain peaks to mind, even for a Southern girl like me, so I decided to design a shawl filled with lace patterns that try to recreate these images. Montagne Shawl is the result – montagne is French for “mountain.” It starts with plain knit at the center which transitions into a stand of trees with footpaths to the nearby mountains. Next come the foothills of the mountain just past the tree line, and then we see the snow capped peaks – the crown glory of a mountain range. Surrounding all of this is the border which ripples like the outline of mountains in the distance. While knitting this shawl you might feel like you’re climbing a mountain, especially when you get to the later sections where the stitch count is high. But the end result is well worth the effort and perseverance, like scaling the heights to see a breathtaking mountain sunrise.”
This circular shawl is made with our 100% merino superwash Resilient Sock yarn for a warm and cuddly shawl that can be enjoyed for years to come!
We have filmed a video tutorial for you showing you how to get started with the shawl, using the Magic Loop method, and we’ll show multiple stitches you’ll use in the pattern.
Have a look:
For an additional tutorial on how to knit using the magic loop method, check out this blog post.
The sample shawl shown used our Resilient Sock yarn in Merryweather. The sample shown used approximately 1,353 yards.
However, you can make this shawl out of any 4 skeins of our Resilient Sock yarns.
We hope knitting this shawl takes you on a journey and that you enjoy each section as you move higher and higher into the mountain peaks.

I’m pretty sure that the magic loop method is, not so magically, throw ME for a loop when I try it..but somehow or other, before 2021 is paart of the history books, I’m coing to do this gorgeous thing….
What a greatt design (I lived in the Rockies for several years, somewhere about 9600 feet and my memories of that time will always be dear and clear to me….
I’m going off to run this vid again just because I can! Hugs you!
Hello Chandi
I just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart, you’ve really encouraged me to pick up my needles to start creating wonderful items.
I was taught to cast on, off, Knit as a child, so was only capable of making a basic baby blanket. Six years ago I followed a pattern for the first time to make my baby a jumper, but I turn 40 in March and I’m determined to start following basic patterns and make things to be proud of. With you guidance I believe this is CNN possible for the first time.
Thank you so much, you’re a true inspiration.
You’ve got this!
Hi Chandi
love this shawl but I am confused on row 2 of the b chart. it says to knit 12. What do I do with the rest of the row. This is the point I am at right now and I do not know what I’m supposed to do
Thank you
Denise, great question – we’ll email you a reply shortly!
Hi Chandi,
I am not at the intermediate level but have so far been able to follow your excellent instructions with the Montagne Shawl. I have reached the border after finishing Chart C – the Snow Capped Peaks. I am totally confused about what to do next but this maybe because I do not know how to crochet. Do you have a video explaining how to do the border. Thanks again for sharing this pattern
Great! So excited for you! We don’t have a video on that part but please do reach out here and we’ll be happy to assist!
Looks lovely, but have you got a crochet version please..
we are working on it. 💕
