Turn Your Favorite Words and Phrases Into Yarn!

I had an idea!

Here’s what I’m needing from you.

COMMENT below and let me know:

  • Your favorite word (or many!)
  • A phrase you adore (something I can use and not be infringing on any trademarks, etc.)
  • Include the colors you think would match up with that word or phrase

And then I will do my best to make them happen. Can’t make any promises, but I am really hoping to do a bunch of them for you!

I also can’t guarantee it’ll perfectly match what you envision, but hey. It’ll be fun.

As an example, check out this MAKE A SPLASH colorway, designed to help you […]

How to Dip Dye a Boho Doily Bowl

Aren’t these Boho Doily Bowls the cutest things ever? They look like precious flower petals!

If you have food coloring and glue, you’re set. You can make your own doilies if you like or just use store-bought ones like I have here. Most dollar stores carry them and they are pretty cheap.

Yarn Dyeing in the Sun

Oh Lord, how I love dyeing.

Yarn, that is.

I don’t do as much of it as I would like, as my duties have mostly shifted to answering emails, listing new colors on the site, blogging, social media stuff, ya know. Etc. Love all those things too. I’m endlessly in awe of our dyers who take my crazy formulas and produce stunning results week after week. (Side note… if you decide to start a business, MOST of your time won’t be making the thing you love to make… just sayin’.)

But sinking your hands into dye, watching crazy colors appear on the yarn […]

How to Dye Yarn With Kool-Aid

Dyeing yarn with Kool-Aid is a BLAST.

Have you ever wanted to try it? Well, here’s your chance.

I’ll walk you through all the steps, show you everything you need and then you can get started.

-It’s a wonderful craft to do with kids but they will need adult supervision.

-You’ll see what each color turns out to look like when applied to the yarn. Some of them are quite surprising.

-It smells AMAZZZZING.

-There really aren’t any rules. Glory be. But a few things to keep in mind: 1. Wool works best if you can get your hands on that. 2. You’ll need to heatset […]

New Things, New Things and a Good Kind of Tired

I randomly dyed up this little beauty yesterday.

It’s called Lavender and Light. Isn’t she amazing? The colors! The curves!

I popped it up on Facebook this morning and boom. All 20 tester skeins sold out lickety split.

I dyed approximately 160 skeins yesterday of various colors and I don’t know what it IS about yarn dyeing but it is exhausting!

To try and keep up with the demand, after listing new items, doing social stuff, announcing our $1500 July yarn giveaway and other general work, I dyed up 60 more skeins of this today and simply couldn’t […]

I have been wanting to show you this since Christmas, as it was a present I made for my mom. But you know how time can just get away from you and things get pushed to the back burner.

Well, no more! I love this gradient shawl so much that I had to stop everything today and finally get a […]

Above the Clouds

I couldn’t BREATHE. I stared with eyes wide and mouth agape; half smiling, half in disbelief.

I’ve flown over these mountains dozens of times. I was born and raised in Alaska (living mostly in Juneau where the only means of escape is via plane or boat) so you would think I’d be totally used to the Alaskan mountains by now.

But apparently not.

I flew down to Anchorage last weekend for some rest and recouping (*Ahem, read: Shopping and eating too much).

On my way back, this was my view.

The pilot swung around so we could see the gorgeous Mt. McKinley. HELLO! Stunning.

I seriously […]

Why I Do What I Do – Musings of a Yarn Dyer

I get asked a lot… How did you get started in the yarn business? What made you think of it? How did you learn to dye yarn, etc?

So here’s the answer, which may surprise you.

I like to think of it as “going with the flow.”

I’ve crocheted since I was 9, but just started knitting a few years ago when I was 27.

I loved it SOOO much that I would sit and knit for hours on end, attempting to be as quick and amazing as the Yarn Harlot, Cat Bordhi, Wendy Johnson and many MANY others.

It was a sad time in […]

The Makings of a Beautiful Thing

This cashmere yarn has been through a lot.

I ordered it back in November, I think. It sat on the shelves for awhile, as I was a little afraid to dye it up… after all, it was cashmere!!  Oh, the buttery softness! How could I even risk messing it up?

Who knows what came over me, but one day, I grabbed a bunch of skeins of it, got two big pots of dye going (one in a rich raspberry color and one in green).

I dunked the skeins into the raspberry pot and simmered until the dye was fully absorbed into the fibers… […]
