You know when you get a notion for a knitting or crocheting project up your sleeve and the idea just won’t go away?

You get a concept for a project and it simmers in your brain for weeks. You think on it. And you think on it. And then the day comes.

And you cannot stand the wait any longer. You scramble for your yarn, your needles or hook and joyously get started.

Sometimes the world comes crashing down at this point as you realize your idea was severely flawed and the yarn just doesn’t work with the pattern or the colors aren’t working well with the pattern…

But sometimes…

Sometimes the stars align in the heavens and the brilliance of your creation takes shape in your very hands. And you know this new addition to the world is perfection itself.

The colors dance with joy. The pattern flows with ease and rapture. Your heart lights up and your spirit dances as you work the stitches. Perhaps you even talk to your new project and tell it how beautiful it is and how you’re going to treasure it for years. Maybe you give it a gender. (eek!)

Well, that, my dear friends, is the state I find myself in this morning.

For weeks I’ve had the idea simmering in my head of knitting the popular Hitchhiker shawl with my Indian Corn yarn.

Yesterday, I couldn’t take the suspense anymore. I HAD to make it. I had to.

I rounded up my needles (which involved dumping them all onto my bed until I found the closest ones to the required size), I wound up my yarn into a cake and plopped down in my comfy chair to begin. And heaven itself opened up. I knew this yarn was meant to be worked into this pattern. You know how it feels. You’ve been there.

I’ll keep you posted as my “baby” grows into the radiant and confident shawl I know it will become someday. It’s still just an infant, but soon… SOON it will be a happy toddler, and then a perky child and then an opinionated teenager, and then… a lovely and sophisticated adult shawl that I will treasure for years. What a proud mama I am already.

This time of year is all about making Christmas gifts, but I had to sneak in a project for myself. It’s always good to have something I can actually work on in front of my family during this time!

Happy I am. 🙂
